New Sony A6xxx coming in May?

So, if this will do 30, surely A7IV will have to do a little more than that in FF. And then A7RV a lot more. Albeit in 8-bit.

could be but I don't care that much about the resolution except inasmuch as it lets me punch in on my lenses and turn my sigma 24-70 and tamron 70-180 into proper macros and the latter into a super-telephoto

Resolution should have a positive effect on photo, a negative/reverse effect on video since the lower tier models will have either a line skip/pixel bin or a severe crop in video. On Z6, the line skip from 24 MPX is alternate, so it doesn't look too bad. On the A7R series, the full frame is very soft.

Technically, they could mix and match. 6K is 18-20 MPX, double that to 36-40. With a slight crop, it's easy to get to 45, which is I think where A7IV will end up, 42-45 MPX.

But I don't think that's how it will be done.

The greatest thing about DLD is he has discussed dozens of cameras and has made countless predictions (several accurate ones) and endless paper comparisons without ever actually using even one of them, lol.

[That's a compliment.]

Afaik the S5 does a full readout on 6000 pixels wide on a full-frame sensor at a similar price point

30MP brings us to 6700 pixels wide. Full readout should be doable especially in aps-c

The Z6 doesn’t line-skip. That’s why it does better video – less noise, less moiré, better detail – than the Z7. However, the readout is too slow for 60p, so it crops to preserve full pixel read-out in that mode – full readout within the cropped frame, that is.

If this new Sony has a 30-megapixel APS-C sensor, that will be a new sensor. The main reason to make a new sensor is to improve the read-out speed. (All the other main parameters – noise, dynamic range, etc. – are already maxed out, butting against physical limits, except for pixel count; and 30 million doesn’t improve on the existing 24/26 million by enough to matter.) In other words, expect full-pixel readout, and maybe at 60p too.

Whether that will be at 10-bit depth is another matter. Even the α7 III doesn’t do 10-bit video, though I suppose its successor will. If it’s 10-bit, the price might be silly, like over two grand.

The Z6 doesn’t line-skip...
I should have added "in the external Raw".

My mistake.

I once dropped 5DMKIII off the counter at Best Buy. Shouldn't that count for something?

PS. Yes, the APS-C 30-32 MPX should have the full readout. The remaining question is whether Sony wants it to have 10-bit codec too or relegate the APS-C line to the entry tier category.

It doesn't make much sense to offer 4K/60p and 10-bit for less than $2K.

But I think ~$2500 does for both while also situating it $700 more than the 4K/30p full-frame a7C.

A sub-$2K Sony camera (even S35) with 4K/60p, 10-bit and amazing AF would hurt the other companies too much, including Canon's R6 (even if it's FF).

I just don't see that happening.

The closest we've seen so far albeit in 2018 was the X-T3 with cropped 4K/60p over the APS-C sensor, internal 10-bit 4:2:0, and a 20 minute recording limit with [eventually] poor AF for around $1500.

I'm a bit more bullish about bit-depth and price for a couple reasons.

First of all, you don't jump from $1400 to $2500. It'll be $2000 tops.

And it might be less. Full-frame is all the rage, and also more expensive to manufacture.

An aps-c camera will not have the high-iso performance of any of the FF cameras, so it has a disadvantage and reason to cost less there.

And lastly, these are photo cameras first, so I dont think that Sony is comparing models primarily by video specs. Except perhaps with the a7s series

Yeah, but you always tend to take the rumors too seriously like all of the a7SIII ones when they were coming in day in and day out last summer when you know they were just there for the content and to build his business. And when he's incorrect, he deletes them.

If it's truly a successor and not a new model like the a7C which randomly appeared out of the blue then perhaps you're right, but that kind of decision would heavily impact all of their other camera sales regardless of the sensor size.

The best-selling cameras are still BM Pockets.

As I recall, the completely incorrect rumors that I was very excited by concerned a quad Bayer sensor and that fake sensor spec sheet. But I think that all the rumors generally in the last rumor round leading up to the actual camera release and not the previously scheduled camera release that got postponed, were pretty spot-on. And certainly everything in the month before launch was spot-on

Anyway, no word yet on 4k60p or 10-bit. I wouldn't buy it without 4k60p. I probably wouldn't buy it without 10-bit

I obviously want to be wrong as I would buy one as would the rest of the world...which is my point, like how could you not, especially if it would be $1398.

It would be a camera that would have everything (including weak IBIS) which has never been done before for that price...there is always something missing, but the 4K/60p, 10-bit and superior AF would be a first for the money.

Isn't full frame itself a pretty big feature to be missing? Especially when entry-level full-frame cameras have come down to the same price as the crop sensor cameras? Aps-c is dying. And certainly if I'm shooting in darkness I would reach for the A7S3 every time. And yeah the IBIS sucks vs panny

A7r new = $4k
A7siii = $3500
A7iv = $2500
A6xxx <=$2k

We both like full-frame cameras probably more than others. As much traction as FF is getting with the LFs and the FX6s and all of the mirrorless', the Pockets as mentioned above (which have a MFT sensor and a slightly smaller than average APS-C sensor) are still doing very well.

As far as stills, I don't see too many people buying the new Sony for photography.

That α7C, pretty new and fairly expensive? Only 8-bit.

I don’t think it’s all that likely that Sony will give a new APS-C camera 10-bit. When’s the α7 IV due?

All 30+ of Sony's mirrorless cameras since 2013 or so are 8-bit...until 2020's a7SIII.

$1798 is a lot of money, but for a full-frame camera compared to about 5 years ago, they are pretty much giving it away for free.

Unheard of pricing for a 4K full-frame sensor sensor and only exists because of the terrible state the industry is in.

P.S. There is also Canon's RP for $999, but it actually launched at $1299.

And...SURPRISE!...there's a 1.7x crop in 4K and they disabled the AF in 4K. :birthdays::birthdays::birthdays:

Panny gave the s5 everything they had. FF camera selling for $1700 now

I have no idea how many buy the a6xxx for stills. But traditionally the crop sensor stills cameras are for amateurs and novices. Since the aps-c lenses are cheaper than FF, that may still be true.

The pockets are not a good comparison because of the incredible codecs and videocentric interface. That's enough of a draw to overlook the sensor, and they'll be manually focusing anyway and preferring cine glass, so a s35 sensor works out nicely

But I feel like even a lot of "FF is overrated" dvxusers come around to it once they get one
