FS5: New Sigma Art primes in E mount

The sigma Art primes look very attractive at great prices but they only show the footage markings on the focus barrel in a little window instead of clearly marked on the barrel of lens. To me its bad enough having the reduced focus throw of a DSLR lens but that way of marking distances makes it much harder to pull focus. Too bad. Don't know why they design it that way. Maybe there's an advantage for still shooters using AF but not for us.

That's your answer right there Lenny.

They're for stills. They've done a lovely job of putting the same glass into proper PL-mount cinema housings for those of shooting motion pictures.

I have the EF versions. They work really well on my FS7, with or without Speed-booster. Obviously, they're not cine lenses but the focus throw is fine and I don't need barrel markings.

Agreed. I have the EF version of the 18 - 35 and for dual purpose use (occasional stills as well) - I can live without the barrel markings for the $. (you can buy the cinema style version if that's your preference)
When I first bought my FS7 over 3+ years ago, I didn't much consider investing in E mount lenses... but now there are lots of good glass in E mount versions. My only dilemma remains having that SB option in full frame Canon mount & getting 2 focal lengths for the price of 1....

Explain to me why it is that you want focus marks.

I never look at the focus marks on my lenses. If I have a focus-pulling AC they are going to pull focus by markings they have made on the FF wheel.

I think it really comes down to price and what you get for the $$.

I’m curious to see just how much (or little) these lenses breathe. I had the 15-105 EF and, while a great lens, was a bit too “breathy” for my tastes...certainly much more than the Sony 18-105. Of course that this really only comes into play when doing a rack focus and such. Neither lens I like the focus on in reality but such are the compromises.

I have the 24-70/2.8 originally for stills with the Canon 5DM4. I used it recently when I had to travel *really light for an interview. You won't pull focus with that lens but for my need it was perfect with the metabones standard and speedbooster. f2.0 for the interview was great. It is incredible sharp and the IS helped for some B-roll shots
