Ok, here is my new film called "Visceral." This film was shot for my DFP class (digital field production). I shot it with an HVX over 3 days. I wrote, shot, edited and produced the entire thing myself. Anywayz, i think with a budget and a crew of 10 people this could really turn into something cool. Tell me your likes and dislikes... I'm open to anything. Thanks!

Hey brock,

You can upload it to http://www.vimeo.com

They have better compression then youtube and can support HD. Best part is that they allow uploads to 500mb. Check the link in my sig to see an example or just explore the site a little. There are many fine examples.

Sup Alex!?

Fatal Defect is on hold until i can get back to Lexington. I had to leave for film school here in LA and we just had to shoot the last scene. But the preparation was going to take way to long to set up to actually get done before i left. Jordan West is still in KY and will probably do some research for how to film the last scene but for me i'm swamped with this film school and my internship (hopefully) at warner bros.

For some positive news, i was liking was we had. The shots were turning out nicely, the lighting was turning out nicely and the acting was about what i expected (average). Overall i think it will turn out nicely.

Hey brock,

Very nice lighting and audio in your short. Would you mind explaining the lighting setup when both Adam and his wife are tied to the chairs.

Good job. What film school do you go to?

Hey Student, thanks.

1st, i should probably ask if you all understand the film by the end. I had trouble making it 12 minutes and still making it understandable. Let me know if you all got the story.

The lighting was done by my main actor who plays Adam (named whit bussey). We both went over it beforehand bu basically we had a key light on the side, with a slight fill light on the other side, and then when we could we put backlight that was exactly half the strength of the key light for seperating them from the background.

Thanks for the comments!

Very nice job technically. It felt like Tony Scott a little. I also enjoyed the dialogue. And nice use of nonlinear storytelling. Just wondering what settings you used to upload to vimeo I have been having a lot of problems.

Thanks Helferc :)

Non non-technically speaking... what did you not like? What could i have done better?

Also, i have no idea what i used. It wouldn't take my straight up .mov file so i converted that to a divx first and then uploaded it. All default settings.

nvm on the lighting. It wasn't too dark. sometimes i would think i was missing something on screen but then the face would pop up.

Great work. I really liked the feel of it, and loved the slow motion. Main thing that struck me as needing work is the foley (hearing footsteps and actions better), but this is something that would improve it further as opposed to saving it, it's quite good as it is.

Thanks HBlack,

Yeah, that's something i can fix though. So i'll continue to improve it some when i get free time. I appreciate the feedback. I might try to enter it into some festivals. I need help getting the rights to the music though. Does anybody here have exptertise in that area and willing to help? Thanks again HBlack!

dude that was awesome, i loved it. definalty would like to see that turned into somthing bigger. the lighting and camera shots were really well done, and though i saw the ending comming, it was still a sick story.

Well, I liked it but I thought you overdid the "look" a little too much. Slow motion is cool but I really think you overused it far too much.

I think you were going for that look/feel so maybe it's just not my thing. I think two slow-mo scenes would have been sufficient. Especially during crucial scenes.

The lighting (while dark is fine) seemed too dark in spots. When someone is talking and they disappear completely during mid-sentence it distracted me from what was being said. That would be fine if they started talking in the darkness and appeared during the scene, but he was in and out and in.

Overall though, this was quite good. I'm just offering some of the criticism that I think you were looking for.

Nice work.

Mike

I appreciate the critism Kyser.

You're the 2nd person that was brought up the darkness thing so maybe it's something i need to consider tweaking. I wanted a LOT of contrast, like half their face dark and half light. In order to do this i would freeze frame a shot with them in that situation and edit the colors. Unfortunately as soon as they start moving that would change. Do you think i should just bring everything back up to it's original or leave it? Otherwise, i think i would have to dynamically change the settings while playing and that wouldn't work.

The only slow motion scene i didn't like was after he cuts his face and it goes on for about 10 seconds. I had transfered files over and they were already rendered so i couldn't change that. They are all at my house in KY :(

I would love to try it in some small festivals (i.e. the no-budget-festival) haha. My budget was like $300 or $400 dollars i think. Anyways i dont think i can do that with copyrighted music. Some let you use it though (like the college emmy's) but they just can't award you for music composition if it's not your own.

Any suggestions?

1:31 to around 1:40 is where the darkness just looks like too much. It may just be a personal thing though.

Edit: I've never entered a festival so I really don't know how it all works. (aside from the online festival here at DVXuser.com)

Sorry,

Mike
