New Short Film

Re: New Short Film

I loved this. Hilarious. How did you get my 'Ex' to do this? Very good work and creative. I thought the acting lacked myself :-/ which is the only complaint I have. They didn't suck outright but seem kind of on the verge of talent but coming up short.

I loved the score PARTICULARY when he removes the VR Helmet; it had a very Carpenteresque feel during this part.

nice work!

Re: New Short Film

HEY! WHO GAVE YOU LICENSE TO TELL THE UNAUTHORIZED STORY OF MY LIFE???
..ahem.. :-*

Seriously, VERY nicely done. lol...
How about some info on how you guys did the effects? What programs used with what plug-ins, etc.? And was this shot on the DVX? Didn't look like it to me.

Re: New Short Film

Hey everyone,

Thank you for your kind comments, it's been getting a better response here than in some of the other forums I've posted the film at.
John - I love your reviews of my work. William Storkson of AudioSFX (www.audiosfx.com) did the music composition and sound design. He's amazing to work with and very reasonable rates. He's worked on a ton of stuff, including Adaptation, Lost In Translation, 3 short films that were in Sundance this year and much more. I would highly suggest him for any kind of post sound work, I have him working on all of my films now... in 5.1.
Isaac - Thanks for your defense of the film and wonderful critique at 2-pop. The "Sleeper" reference is a huge compliment.
Storyteller - It was shot on a DVX100. Not my best work with the camera, but not too bad. Everything was done in FCP 4 & Photoshop. The only filter used was Trapcode's "Shine" filter. The parts where the "*****" is glowing was a roto'd still image from the various shots, from Photoshop, re-applied to FCP, then distorted and added Shine. All the sound was done on Pro-Tools.
All in all, it was a fun and cheap film to do. We had a blast making it.

Just in case anyone is taking offense to the film, I'm more than happy to discuss the merits of the film with you. Feel free to email me at cj@arkhamfilms.com.

Thanks everyone and let me know if you have any more questions.

Re: New Short Film

Hi everyone,

I also forgot to mention, that the credit sequence and the testimonials were both done in front of a green screen. We pulled the key with DVmatte Pro, in Final Cut 4.
I couldn't achieve it alone with FCP, After Effects or Combustion (although I'm very new to combustion). DVmatte Pro was kind of a no-hassle keyer that I could just throw on with good results.

If you want to see the keyed video specifically, go to:

Thanks.

Re: New Short Film

All of your films at the arkham website are amazingly good. i really enjoyed HUMAN. I know that HUMAN was shot with the XL1, but do you believe that the DVX100 would have performed the same or better?

Re: New Short Film

Ptpiz, what kind of question is that?  The DVX would have preformed tons better.  It would not have the "soap" video look.  Human was still cool though. If the XL1 would have preformed the same as the DVX than where is XL1user.com and all the XL1 lovers?

Re: New Short Film

Ptpiz-

Tough question. I achieved a lot of the look of Human because of the glass that is available for the XL1. It was my favorite camera of its day. But that was the only plus, besides that it was a shoulder mounted camera.
For me, the areas where the DVX blows away the XL, and any other camera in the same or near price range, is the frame rate options, shutter controls and pixel resolution. The DVX produces a sharp looking image that makes everything else look dull and muted. It's the closest thing to film aside from DV50 or HD.
Ultimately I'd love to have a hybrid with Panasonic hardware and Canon glass.

I'm not sure which I would have preferred to have on the Human set, due to Canon's depth of field. I'll have to think a little bit more about that.
