New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

Re: New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

Good stuff. Shouldn't this be in the Screen grabs section?

Re: New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

I thought it was really well shot... only problem was that one shot of the guy in the red tie... it looks purposely lit
other than that, great job!

Re: New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

Hey Hudson, Undead Nation hits Australia!

Re: New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

What? Huh?  Ill watch it now!  :D

EDIT

That was great! Nothing cooler than tales of the macabre! Awesome. I loved it. I'm not even going to go into my .02 on the technical aspects as it was just too much fun.

More!

Re: New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

lostsheep007,
HAHA! I use to work at an office like that.. I enjoyed it! Not working there. I meant the movie. Good job bro. :)

Re: New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

Nice work, mate. I like the trend I'm seeing with more storytelling, rather than just clips. The shot of the masocistic Nazi guard in the elevator with the Muzak playing in the background is priceless. Keep it up.

Re: New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

Nice little story! But the image needs some color correction to make it more film, its just to light and not scary enough. And I think some cuts can be tighter, leaving less empty frames behind.
But all in all, a nice enjoyable story, just fun.

Yes! Me too!

Re: New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

Twilight Zone Aussie style! I enjoyed this.

[sound could use some work]

Good job - Good story

Re: New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

Cheers everyone for the feedback!

I've done a bit more tightening up on it and I plan to get it out to a some film festivals fairly shortly. Tropfest didn't even rate it in the top 72! But then again they've never liked anything I've made...

I am intrigued if I made any woeful technical errors and would like to know if that's the case. You know, crossing the line, miscut conversations etc. I have no professional training, nor have any of the cast and crew I've used. In fact the actors are just my mates and some people I work with. As you may have spotted, the lighting consisted of a table lamp with a red 60W bulb. I only used it on the boss and the german as they're the freaks. The budget was also AU$700, half of which went on keeping the cast and crew happy (i.e. beer and food) - a wise investment I think.

From my technical point of view, the shots I had problems with were the XCU shots. It was very difficult to focus the DVX - perhaps there's an ideal zoom/focus setup for XCUs but I struggled to find it, even with the chart from Adam Wilt. He's right in that the focus changes as you zoom tho. Perhaps someone has a link to a useful article on that? I'd really like to get a full screen CU of an eyeball in the next flick I do.

Also the next thing I'm planning on making is a motorcycle short - anyone know of a good resource about fixing a dvx to a bike frame without abject terror? :-)

PJ

PS Everyone thinks he's a nazi! It's actually an east german corporal's uniform from the Regiment Friedrich Engels in (old) East Germany. Tristan, the actor playing Hans, did have a full-on original nazi Waffen-SS uniform we could have used but decided against as it really was full-on. We thought people could get really offended. Anyway I liked the medals on the one we used!

Re: New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

Okay.  Here is my take.  I can go on and on when it comes to the 'subjective opinion' but these points I feel strongly about.  Again, I do want to reiterate that I really enjoyed this piece of work and can't wait for the next submission from you.

Note:

I would like to have seen a tighter reverse on the NEW EMPLOYEE as he speaks with the BOSS for the first time.  Specifically, moving the camera closer to the INSIDE of the line.  This particualr shot (which is a nice choice and 100% works) once or twice I felt was good, but we see the cut on this shot 7 TIMES.  This includes the BOSS REVERSE shot.  Within this 7 times you could have changed the position on the LINE and also the framing to include closer shots.  The goal is to visually give the viewer some eye candy and keep the eyes entertained.

ON a further note; you used the SAME identical shot later when he is UNDEAD.  Since we had already seen this shot once, It would be nice to give the audience a different look on that reverse as it stands.

When the EMPLOYEE is working after hours it would have better been served with a LIGHTS OUT kind of mood.  As if the employees have all gone home and only a few lights remain on.  With the identical DAYLIGHT hours lights being used, it doesnt add to the creepiness or the mood.

When the NAZI dude picks up the SOUL-CUBE there is no sense of weight.  I would like have felt the body in there
as he lifted it.

When the NAZI dude swings the bat; it was very weak.  DO some practice and research on this technique.

One shot stands out:

And, the shot works well, even if I would not have shot it that way, but I wonder why you chose to swing from one end of the LINE to the other when the EMPLOYEE is bending down to inspect the SOUL CUBE for the first time?  Again, it works, but has a shock to it; a very dramatic cut (Reverse) for me.  Was this intentional?  There is no line violation on it but it is very dramatic.

TECH ERROR?

I can see you DOLLY past the column  ::) (Shadow)

WISH LIST: I am a junkie on color correction and crushed levels.  Would like to have seen this with a more moody palette.

EDIT

You definatley have the basics grasped on the 180 and your use of SPLIT EDITS is nice. Good job!

Also, sorry about NAZI comment. I meant EAST GERMAN !

Re: New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

Wow!

Cheers for that John, very useful. Looks like I'll have another play with Vegas before sending it anywhere, perhaps with some creep cropping in on those shots to add variety to the first conversation and the return at the end, as well as generally tightening up a few key shots, and also removing the lift part of Hans and the box in that scene (not needed really).

I agree practising the action stuff is a good idea. I hadn't filmed any action shots before though the reverse was deliberate with Hans appearing behind him. All up I'm still a learner in the big scheme of things.

Plus I did get that Magic Bullet LE as a freebie with Vegas 5 and I've never used it so I'll have a go with filters it includes to colour correct. Just downloaded 5 more free ones, so something should make a difference.

And of course I'll be getting on with something else as soon as I can, but after I've given this a little more TLC. Which I will post of course! Perhaps even a DVXFest entry! :)

For me it's easy to get slack at the end of the whole production cycle in the editing because it's a long process as a one man band from conception to finished DVD. And the urge to drop it and start something new feels so appealing. But this deserves some more work.

Thanks again,

PJ

PS The sound does need work, Dakota - it's on the list!

Re: New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

Please post again when final cut is finished. I enjoyed this one. I agree; removing shot of LIFTING SOULD-CUBE and CUTTING straight to ELEVATOR would pick up the pace and work better. I also agree, having another 'Zombie Employee' milling about would add to the mystery early.

You might be still learning but you are on the right track! :)

Re: New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

Spectacular, supernatural! Where did you get that fancy DDR uniform for Hans (HR) ?? :o

Re: New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

Ha, that was hilarious. Nothing is better than when you mix a twist of nazi's, zombies, and supernatural. Reminds me of the last Wolfenstein game.

I agree with John. color correct this bad boy. I really needs it because this should be such a moody piece. And yes the sound needs alot of work, but you already saaid you'd work on that.

I can't wait to see a more polished version. Horror/Comedy shorts are the best!

Re: New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

dude that was awesome! i think i got it... how cubicle work and punching the card turns you into a zombie...

Re: New Short Film To Check Out - Induction

Thank you all! :D

I'm on the sound and the colour corrections!!

OK gotta do it, any tips on the sound? Maybe a movie I could rent to learn something from?? I'm really winging it - no idea really!!
