New Short Film (shot in 5 hours)

Bravo.. nice actors and poster...

So who was the killer, and what exactly happen in da end..

yeah, nice reproduction of the classic 70/80s horror vibe! total halloween meets motocross. kidding. i think the only thing missing to make this a completely faithful horror flick is to let the viewer know from the start who the killer is. ie, halloween, friday the 13th, nightmare on elm street, etc. that's what i feel seperates all these new "horror/thriller" flicks from the traditional horror genre. excellent job though, great feel, decent pacing. LOVE THE INTRO!

Thanks a lot!
The ending can be up for interpretation. What do you think happened? Everyone I have showed it too has different opinions, some more creative than others...

In anycase, thanks for the feedback!

Thanks! I could agree with that to a certain extent. I was actually going to shoot a small segment of backstory, but just decided not to. I hear ya though. The Man in Orange is actually a character I created three years ago and have a little soft spot for. It's funny because I wrote a backstory for him just for fun 2 years ago, but have never fleshed it out on film. Maybe thats the next step....

yeah, a backstory short would be awesome! this would definitely put even more emphasis on this vid as a "true" piece of horror. it's cool, i never would have thought that helmet could be so striking. it's definitely your lighting - keep it up!

oh yeah, and i'm super interested in checking out the full version of summer school. i go to school (calarts) with the blonde girl in the trailer (i wish i knew her name so i wouldn't have to call her "blonde girl"), but yeah, it looks cool too!

I think that it's shot very well, but the second shot in the beginning is too long. :) Besides that, nice job!! It reminds me of the movie High Tension.

I thought it was awesome. Opening was fantastic. Maybe the best opening shot I've ever seen in a student film, but close if nothing else.

Wish the orange guy would've had a back story, but overall it was very good. Liked the two shot seperated by a foot. Could've easily been just a cool shot, but you actually had it for a reason.

Really well shot, good framing, nice editing, perfect spooky music. The kids were actually convincing. I sat throught the whole thing, and normally i cannot tolerate more than 20 seconds of clips posted. However, I don't thnk I am the only who doubts this was shot in less than a week's time.
Excellent job .

Wow, really awesome. Like the look and the shots you used. I especially liked the end credits, how you froze the images etc...What did you use for CC?

One suggestion, the killer put a silencer on the gun, right? If so, it would be an almost non-existant blast, but hey it was a good flick.

Terrific job. That shot in the beginning when the car first came into frame was exquisite.

Could you post your camera settings & equipment?

not bad.

are those your friends? (the actors). If they are, you have good friends that all look good on camera. Don't let them go.

the blood-work seemed to have some problems, but I doubt you really focused on it.

All you need is a lighting kit, or to work on a lighting your shots and I think you will be all set man.

kudos.

cheers.

Yeah could you give us the settings you used and what type of guns were those that you used for this short. Were the blow back airsoft guns? How did you guys make the guy jump back from the gun shot against the wall after he was shot... that looked real...

First of all, Thanks to everyone for watching! I appreciate the feedback.

First off, to answer some questions, yes I did actually shoot this in about 5 hours time. I have been shooitng this quicky shorts for the past three summers with my friends just for fun! We have a blast! I actually was really nervous that the footage I got wasn't going to be enough! We shot it so quick that I actually missed some shots I should have had. Yet, I have to hand it to my AD for looking out for me. Now, it does takes me several hours to edit and sweeten the piece...

The CC was all done in Final Cut Pro 5.

The piece the killer puts on the front of the gun is actually a flash reducer, which wouldn't silence the gun but slightly reduce the upward flash of the gun. I tried to adapt to the laws of this device, but realized in doing this would lose some of the glitz of the gun flash. My thinking behind it was more based on the ridiculous guns and components characters used in the 70's films (for instance, in the film Black Caesar, Fred Williamson uses a German Mauser Broom handle pistol.)

The gun I used was an actual German Luger.

I didn't use a 35MM adapter. The settings I used for the camera can be found HERE.

Yep, all the actors are my buddies up a my cabin. Every summer they seem to get a little better at the acting thing. Thanks arhartman for the props though.

The blood work isn't the best, I'll admit, but it's not really a bloody kind of movie. That was actually one thing I was trying to do was to make a horror movie without the overly excessive gore. Plus, like I said, did this so quick, I think we just mixed food coloring, karo, chocolate syrup and milk. We just dumped a little on each actors back and they smeared it...

and as for the lighting, I didn't have any lights. It was all practicals. I usually don't use lights to shoot THESE little quick shorts, because of the lack of time and patience the actors and crew have. BUT I agree, lights could have helped with a few scenes. I usually do light!

Like I said above, the gun was a real working German Luger. I simply painted the blasts in in Photoshops and had my actor whip his wrist as though he was shooting. And the guy that flew back after getting shot...that was all him and a couple frames I cut in between.

Again, thanks for the feedback and props! More films of all kinds to come in the future!!! More at www.randomcreatureface.com
