Re: new short film + old ones

IAL, having viewed "Alternate Ending", I officially nominate you for the Matt McDermitt Award! ;D

Re: new short film + old ones

IAl you have a talent. You know how to tell a story, you know how to capture it. Great job!

Re: new short film + old ones

I dug it the most. You're a talented guy and certainly not a loser ;D

Re: new short film + old ones

Oh no, he's a loser all right. Just a damn TALENTED loser. Bastard! My next short was going to use a similar theme of backing up the footage to find out how we got to a place in the story. Oh well... It is just a short. Not like I can do much with it beyond my reel anyway, right? ;)

Seriously, VERY nice work. Look forward to seeing more from you. How did the footage hold up on the projected screen?

PS: You should do voice over work. That is you as the narrator, right?

Re: new short film + old ones

I liked the scene transitions and "blurring" effects. It was also cool when the nice man walks away with the painting, he is kept out of focus. For a split second I wondered why, but then your main character enters from the left in full focus. Small observation, but cool.

Re: new short film + old ones

hey thanks guys :) this one was hard to put together.. alot of it was very last minute.. (we were changing assigned roles, and rewriting the story right before shooting) my wife came up with the story , which is based off a true story, and i decided to tell it in the quasi-reverse -> forward/alternate fashion (sorry storyteller :P). we were still working out storyline details when the actors showed up, and had no shooting plan whatsoever. it was actually a real flip floppy production during shooting, but it came together ok in post. its supposed to show the impact that people have on other peoples lives..even through seemingly simple and small acts of kindness. it held up on the screen fine, but i dont think the projector was completely in focus, cause past projects have looked better on bigger screens. the cut with the man walking away out of focus right away was part of a longer shot that had selective focus shifts, and neato camera stuff going on. but after editing down to the max limit 2:15 to enter into the contest alot of that sort of stuff wasnt needed, and not essential to the story so it got cut. anyway thanks again. :)

Re: new short film + old ones

The concept of this film reminds me quite a lot of one of the films that won this year at TriggerStreet. Was this meant like a parody of it or something?

Re: new short film + old ones

I doubt it since he clearly states his wife came up with the story which is based off a true story. Great minds think alike, etc. It happens...

Re: new short film + old ones

hmm.. i just watched it. it was good. the beginnings are very similar i was like :o.. ok i guess it is alot alike, but the rest of the story, and plot (espescially the ending or resolution) was not alike at all . but yeah, like storyteller said.. it happens. ill have to tell my wife about that! also ill have to note it when "Alternate Ending" goes on triggerstreet that it was an original concept..perhaps ill add "based on a true story" to the credits? id probably catch alot of flak otherwise :)

Re: new short film + old ones

IAL you are the best! True inspiration, I have been thinking about reversing stuff all weekend and there you go, some more food for thought! Can you share the end effect colour enhancements pls? Yellow and greens looked real nice (reminds me of a gummy ;)) Thanks a million for you posts IAL!

Re: new short film + old ones

hey thanks theos :) . although im not the best by far, it was fun to imagine it for a sec. anyhow the color correction is just leaning yellow(and a pinch of red) in the midtones, with a little increase in brightness, and crushed blacks(levels adjustment)- for the 2nd half of it.

for the first half, it was only crushing the blacks(levels adjustment), and leaning moderately blue in the midtones.

Re: new short film + old ones

Awesome job on all three of the shorts! I am totally impressed! Can I ask you a question at the risk of exposing myself as a completely naive and clueless videographer (which I am)? How did you get the videos in the wide screen format? I am assuming you shot it with an anamorphic lens, correct? So after that, what did you have to do with your settings and did you have to specify those dimensions upon exporting? Anyone else if free to answer if they know how to do it...

Second, in "Alternate Ending," what did you do to get those blur effects/transitions? Did you keyframe it or do you have some filter?

Finally, I love your music selections! What program do you use (or did you use one) to make the music (particularly in the first two).

Once again, awesome job!

Re: new short film + old ones

thanks kyle,

they are shot with acombo of anamorphic, and the standard lense.. both ways need to be matted to the final 2.35:1 ratio the anamorphic is just matted less after letterboxxing it into a 4:3 project.

the blur transitions were keyframed, as are the glow/flash transitions

i write the music myslef... it never hurts to be a composer. but, i shouldnt really say that i wrote any music for any of these. it was more of me watching the timeline a couple times and getting a feel, and then playing along to the timeline in realtime with whatever comes to mind ..simple stuff like this music only takes one impromptu take, and i call it good enough. if it were some real orchestration, it takes a while to really work it all out, but i still just keep it in my head, and just record layer after layer untill the composition in my head is fiannly orchestrated .

Re: new short film + old ones

Nice work IAL. I love the color change in the foward moving footage. I dont know if it was just my speakers but the music seemed to over power the dialog. I see that park is the place you like to shoot. I live near Central park in nYc and its apart of a few upcoming projects. I shot there last weekend for the DVXuser movie to get some B roll footage and fake news cast footage. There were even people rehersing a play but they said I couldnt use it in the segment. Just got a M-Audio radium61 keyboard to compose my own music too. What program do you use for midi sounds? I am going to use REASON for now until i find something else if there is any.

Re: new short film + old ones

hey thanks man! yeah, i had the issue of people and traffic at the park, so i couldnt get clean dialog, and had not time for ADR. so i had to settle for it being a bit low .. i didnt want to lower the music any more cause otherwise the levels as a whole would be really low. the "alternate ending " one was the only one at that park though.

as for the midi, i dont use any software emulated or vst instruments at all. i use a Kurzweil K2500XS with all the goodies you can eat in it (it was a demo model for Kurzweil so it has all the goods totaling like 13,000.00 or somthing after additions) running midiXS + SCSI to the computer, then the synth mixedown track DA is run into the cpu via a DA card, and proccesed and either recorded or monitored or whatever once its in the cpu.

Re: new short film + old ones

Cool, i thought flight was done in a park.. I didnt look at it thinking I saw it already...
