New Series

I am pretty sure that at least some of this new series, Science of the Movies, if not all, was shot on the HVX200. Pretty badass sequence showing an HVX200 setup on a Milo motion control rig. Worth a look.

The show is badass!

I enjoyed it and noticed the very expensive doggicam superslide and powerslide rigs have the same Igus rails that are in Zaza's DIY slider project and one I'm working on.

I was also told the show was shot on hvx's.

Next week is fake fire power (f/x for guns) and IMAX!

I wish I would have recorded it, probably a good thing because I would watch it 20 times :)

I didn't get a chance to see it. I don't even know if I have the Science Channel. I have sucky DirectTV, they are lame and probably either want to charge me an extra $15.00 a month to get it or don't carry it. They already gouge me for like $45.00 per month and I don't get National Geo. Those web clips struck a chord with me because I have interviewed most of the people in those clips, Dykstra several times.

Dan

That's just crazy, no Nat Geo???

Dykstra is the man! If I could only send my $250 Zaza slider to him for half a day it would no doubt come back with 5 axis motion control with the extended gyroscopic hyperflux 4 cam extended laser speed boom and drink holder.

Dan,

The show is being re aired right now, get to a TV, break into your neighbors house if need be! Dykstra is on rght now. Could be a 2 hour delay for west coast.

Chip,

Did you call DirecTV for me and upgrade me? I just went downstairs and clicked on the TV and I am suddenly receiving National Geographic, Logo, Science Channel and a bunch of others that I was not receiving last night. Very weird.

Watched the motion control episode. Yes, pretty entertaining. Pacing is good, stories are small and interesting. I like how they get the VFX companies to do a shot with the host, that is smart and innovative. I did a very similar piece for Disney on "The Parent Trap" in 2004 with EFilm and CISHollywood. They used a similar sort of rig. Actually, the technology of Motion Control hasn't really changed that much in ten years other than it is smaller, lighter and cheaper. Very similar wokflow for The Parent Trap in 1998.

I am trying to get my head around what the pitch must have been. "Yeah, remember that show Movie Magic from the early 90s?" Same exact show pretty much. Host is okay without being too annoying. It's funny, I bet 90% of that show is shot in Burbank. Everyone who is not from around here thinks that production is done in Hollywood and everyone who is around here knows that in reality, hardly anything is shot and posted in Hollywood, it's mostly in Burbank and Glendale.

3 years ago I made a casual pitch for a show about infomercials / behind the scenes / production and it was shot down, the response I got was fear of loosing advertising reveune for giving away trade secrets, now there is a show on Discovery Channel called Pitch Men that is almost the same thing but with Billy Mays (tele brands). Guess I was also a few years early.

I got was fear of loosing advertising reveune for giving away trade secrets,

Chip, you haven't been reading the Grammar Police thread, have you? I think you meant losing. Loosing is a 13th century old English iteration of loosening.

I love Pitchmen. That show was a pleasant surprise. I hate Billy Mays, he is very annoying but you cannot deny that the man can sell like a machine, he has sold hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars of merchandise. And the show is a revelation, it is very well done and off camera, Billy is fun to watch interact with Sully. So I guess I should say that I hate Billy Mays Dramatis personae.

Kudos to the production company and minds behind Pitchmen, I find it one of the most entertaining shows of Discovery, it is leagues better than Deadliest Catch, which I find mind numbingly repetitive, boring and depressing. You have seen one episode, you have seen them all.

I just caught it today. I thought it was pretty cool. Exactly like Movie Magic. Which I think is what got me interested in film making. That was a long long time ago.

Though I want to punch the host in the face. Aside from that - pretty cool stuff.

It's a Freudian thing that I do now after reading your post in the Grammar cop shop so thanks for that one.

It's Beer's show from Original Productions same guy who produces Deadliest Catch, Ice Road Truckers, Axe Men, Tornado Road, Black Gold etc.

I know, Original is a factory. Not to mention that he also had a few episodes on NBC of that jobs show. But EVERYTHING on network gets canceled quickly, doesn't it? It's funny, a few years ago Thom Beers couldn't get arrested and now he is probably the most successful producer in cable. I bet he has a little shrine in his offices to Monster Garage.

That's what keeps me going, knowing that with some luck and hard work, you and I could each be the next Thom Beers. Before he broke with Monster Garage, his shows were the kind that were buried in deep cable and that nobody watched, daytime strip shows that were on late morning that barely pulled in any numbers from bored housewives and the unemployed. Look at him now. Just takes one hit and some smarts.

Yep, he makes deals buying and selling shows / series like they are used cars, his background is the automobile business. The person who made his short lived primetime NBC career was GB (former network exec) who worked closely with BW (your partners neighbor) at P. He did make some money with flops before Monster Garage but that show put him on the map when Disco's golden boy was Pillgram, for 09 Disco ordered 100 hours of programming from him and never asked twice what the shows were about. He has an airplane wing for a desk with his Monster Garage awards on it :) Last I heard.

He has had some really good ideas and has written, narrated, shot, field produced very well but a bg part of his success is from his editors who can mine 500+ hours of footage like there is no tomorrow, just amazing reality story structure, editing and post skills.

With the tight relationship Beer's has with Disco it is even harder to get in the door, it seems like the only way they will listen is if you have an inside connection and they make a personal call on your behalf, that's some good job security for a guy who just put $50 mil in his pocket yet keeps the "regular guy" mentality.

Lets go make a show! :)
