SHORT: New sci-fi Short Film

Good to see you're sticking with the scifi elements. A man after my own heart... :)

Your actor is incredible. He really sold this, when you've got someone capable of emoting like that your job is half done and any technical accomplishment is secondary. At first I thought 'here we go' but gave it a chance. Then I thought 'hmm, that's interesting' and kept watching. And then I thought 'hey that's neat' and was left wanting more. The ideas and mysteries here combined with a great performance would make the basis for an intriguing longer piece.

This is a very serviceable trailer/promo clip to seek funding to do so if you can get the script right. The effects would be minimal, locations etc could be pretty much anywhere with an idea like this. This is a high level of production value for what I'm assuming is pretty low cost. I'd be interested in collaborating or helping out in some way on something like that.

Haha, Thanks :)

Yeah Luigi was great, really easy to get along with and totally brought his own thing to the role.

I think i know why you though "here we go" at the start haha, it was pretty exposition heavy, which i'm not a fan of but under the constraints i had (shooting it in half a day and 1 location) it was the only way i could think of getting it across. I'm glad you were drawn in, it sounds like the film worked on the level i wanted it to with you, it hasnt worked this way with many others on other forums haha, but hey, that's a part of it all, some people wont get it, others will.

i tend to try and tell my stories very visually, not a huge fan of dialogue exposition usually. the intention behind it was doing a small story and a big decision, it's kind of purposefully incomplete feeling because i wanted to experiment with the idea of leaving "what happens next?" in the viewers mind, and maybe let them interpret it in a way that suits them. But who knows maybe i'll do a follow up Haha!

The budget all together was probably around $50 that was just to make the backpack. so yeah pretty cheap.

And yeah, that sounds good to one day do a bit of a collab or something! i'd love to see some of your stuff!

Thanks again!

Edward

When you've watched/read a lot of genre material the "here we go" is just the feeling you get when you start to feel you've seen this many times before. I was expecting you to take the road oft-travelled but was very pleased to see the lesser route taken. With a lesser actor you wouldn't have pulled it off but he kept the screen interesting as the hints started to drop. It actually makes the unique spin more effective when you go "hangonaminute, didnt expect that". I have a good idea of what was happening but I don't know for sure. I love that feeling, that's when you end up talking about the movie with your mates for many hours more than the movie itself. Looper was almost that movie but plot holes aside (easily put aside, the movie tells you to get over it and just watch and the performances were great) it gave just a little bit much away and tried to be too much. I don't think the TK element added anything of value besides a couple of money shots. Should have stuck to the core idea, it had mileage but was reduced to a mcguffin in the end.

Back to yours, what I really liked about it will be the very thing that turns many off because there is mystery and things to contemplate in this and to the detriment of art in general, most people don't like being left with questions. But some of us crave open-ended but satisfying movies. They are hard to do. So when something comes along that unashamedly doesn't explain itself yet is convincing enough for you to believe the author at least knows (unlike the middle seasons of lost where it seemed they were playing for time in order to come up with an idea, any idea, of where to take it). You do exclude part of your audience taking this route but you gain passionate support from those of us whose refined (or pretentious depending on your point of view) tastes that usually go unsatisfied by mainstream output.

The exposition was fine (and essential really) and was well disguised. Not a problem. Your visual style works well. I didn't comment before on the technical achievements as the performance had me transfixed. It is always better when the audience can see and interpret rather than be told. The mystery in this is definitely a product of the editing. The buildup of "waitaminute" moments were you saw something you didn't expect to see and subversion of established expectations was flawless. These things are what interest me in working with you because it is extremely rare to find someone who seems to largely share my sensibilities. You might be on the other side of the country but at least you're not on the other side of the world.

I'm mainly a writer but am in the middle of my first personal production as we speak. It's mainly a technical exercise to get my workflow in place before I involve too many others, I don't want to burn bridges by the wasting the time of the few people I can interest in working on projects. I'm trying to just get it done so I can get on with the next one, came up with a simple idea essentially involving getting from A to B but it's spiralled out of control and the writer in me keeps trying to make it good when I'm just trying to get it done. Send me a PM with your email and I'll send you some samples.

Wow, thanks that means a lot to me!

Yeah i was very careful this time around to get a more experienced actor than in my last film, and as i said before he was great, i'll definitely work with him again.

On a side note - totally agree about Looper haha, not the best film in my opinion for the reasons you stated, plus something about the seriousness of the kid really annoyed me :P

I'm all about ambiguity in my films, most the films that have had a profound impact on me, had some sort of ambiguity in them, but as you were saying it needs to be done properly to be good haha.

It sounds like you come from the Robert McKee school of writing?

I'm looking forward to seeing some samples!
