F5: New S35 17-120 Canon Servo Lens

That lens is a very interesting proposition. Presuming the optics are good Canon should do well with that with the shoulder mounted focus on S35 cameras this year. Definitely going to check this out next week.

This will be just what the doctor ordered for a lot of people, but I suspect it will have some compromises too (breathing).

A lot of new lenses like the Aluras are sharp corner to corner at 2.8 and any focal length.

I have a feeling this one will come close to that idea, but only get 90% there. Which, again, is fine for a lot of situations. Most of us do not pixel peep our lens sharpness.

And, if it must be said, light years ahead of putting a ENG lens on a B4 adapter.

Focus rotation is only 180 degrees apparently, which is less than ideal for narrative style work, but probably fine for ENG. Price is great, certainly requires some thought up against 2-lens combos like the Angie Optimos, Zeiss CZs and Canon's own new cine zooms - this range at this speed has been a $40,000 minimum outlay whichever combo you've opted for till now (Cabrio or 2x Cine Zoom options).

180 focus rotation isn't terrible, especially since the zoom isn't incredibly close focus. That opens up a decent amount of real estate for the far end. The Cabrios are about the same rotation for the same reason.

Final pricing is TBD. $33,000 USD list price. IF Canon sets a lower street price id like to see it below $30k. It may be a stretch to see it that low but we can hope can't we. I've been looking forward to this lens for some time as have others. I would suggest that if you have interest in this lens you should begin placing orders and getting reservations with dealer of your choice.. Orders are already stacking up. :-)

Wonder how this will stack up in 4K?........... From Duclos The focus falls off a bit throughout the field dropping to about 100 lp/mm in the Super 35mm frame.

Looks like what I suspected might be right, based on Matt Duclos's write up.

A great solution if your expectations go no farther than an ENG lens, and the caveats that come with that.

But if you're expecting Cabrio/Zeiss Compact Zoom/Canon short cine zoom performance with that range and size, you might be a little disappointed.
