FS7: new rumours of a wider sony lens for fs7

I've been told by a few sales reps now that a new wider zoom is in the works from Sony, they have been told by Sony reps. I have no idea how reliable this information is but has anyone else heard similar reports ?

I get by with the 28 - 135 zoom but a nice lens ( which I think they can make for a reasonable price ) for me would be the 18-100 f4 par focal with manual focus and aperture. I think I will just buy a speedbooster and get a 24-100 canon for run and gun jobs, although I hate wasting money and if Sony is about to drop a workhorse lens onto the market I'd hate to go down the canon route.

So far I have heard it directly from three dealers when I was asking about lenses, the response seemed to be just hold off something is coming. Their source was Sony reps who said Japan was "aware of the problem and were working on it" my gut feeling is they are "cinemazing" the 18-100 so its 4k ready. I think an f4 18-100 par focal lens would be a great piece of kit for around 3-4k. I dont think thats beyond Sonys capability to make. One of those and a few fast primes and you really have most situations covered. If they bring in centre crop then 18-100 becomes a very very handy lens for doco makers.

A 16-85 would make more sense. That would be almost as wide as my EX3 with the 8XS wide Fuji lens.

Sony already makes a nice (and cheap) Sony 18-105mm f/4, so I doubt they'll make another lens which so closely overlaps with it.

I regard it is a great pity they gave the update for this lens to the FS700 but never sent the firmware update needed to the FS100 owners :-/ Thus this fine run and gun lens is unusable by FS100 owners. As I wouldn't mind getting a cheap FS100 to use with my enjoyable 18-105mm f/4 (at the moment it almost lives on my A5100),

Where is this cheap 18-105 that looks so good? Certainly not the 18-105 that I returned for refund because of CA and poor, smudgy detail? I should have avoided it, seeing the dirt cheap $600 price tag. The wide lens on my Sony EX3 cost $4,000 and it's a piece of crap in my opinion. Sony surprised me with the $2500 28-105. It's now my best lens. Too bad the FS7's not a full frame 35 though.. 28mm is too narrow for indoor work, landscapes or architectural work. It's more suited to sports, aerial shows and interviews.

I still find it perplexing that we have wider lenses for small sensor cameras, but no one has come up with a wide lens (other than primes) for larger sensor cameras. I've got a 12mm prime that's so small and light, it looks ridiculous on the FS7, not to mention my hand is much bigger than it, so every time I reach to adjust the focus, my hand gets in the shot. The 28-135 is sized just right.

As I understand it, Sony couldn't offer a firmware fix for the FS100 because it
doesn't have the extra pixels to 'fix' the distortion like all the stills cameras,
plus to the FS700 and FS7 have.

I had the same problem with some of my smaller lenses. One trick I found was to put a step-up filter ring (no glass) on the lens so it gives a nice barrier at the end of the lens for my fingers to rest against. For example, if your lens takes a 62mm filter, add a 77mm adapter ring. Costs about $6 and makes a great fence to keep your fingers where they belong.

Good idea.

18-105 f4 would be great. But I've got a feeling f5/55 successor will be full frame with 4K super 35 crop mode.

All of these rumors about a new Sony lens is great news but to me, only if it has the FOV to match. We all know the kit lens is 28-135 but the effective FOV is more like 40-190. So if Sony came up with an 18-100 and it's full sensor, then the FOV would be closer to 28-150. Not wide enough for me but certainly tons better than the kit. The 18-105 they make now is pretty good but as it's fly by wire, it's frustrating. I'm now just keeping it mounted on my A7s and in automatic. Still frustrating but at least I have a wide to moderate tele lens for Broll or 2nd camera use.

If they do a 18-100 and it's a full frame lens, it will still be 18-100
on any Super 35 cam....this 'crop' stuff is crazy. 18mm on Super 35
looks about the same as as a 24 does on FF, so seems plenty wide to me.
Of course some people may still want a super wide and need an 11-16 or
10-20. They'll never make 1 lens that is good for every purpose, I think people are
just hoping for a '75% of the time' lens.

That's a good idea for any small lens.
I do want to get the cine version of this lens though, for the smoother control of the iris and larger controls with more turning range and finer control. This is an SLR lens that I have here. Rokinon makes a cine version that is larger, has much better controls and is compatible with follow focus. It's on my to buy list.

16mm is a 'decent' wide angle on S35, but to be equivalent to the wide Fuji lens on my EX3, I need about 14.5mm. My 12mm is almost 90° wide and very good in small spaces. You could shoot in an elevator with that lens. A certain Italian movie director likes the 4mm Fujinon lens for the EX3 for the same reason. 4mm on a 1/2" sensor yields 77.3° coverage. 16mm on the FS7 yields 72.8° coverage (horizontal). The stock 28mm gives only 45.7° coverage. Thus, you must be 1.8X the distance of the object's width, to take it all in.

I have the Duclos 11-16mm f/2.8 PL mount, and I bet you'd love that lens. I do.
BTW, that's the one lens I own that needs the step-up ring to prevent my fingers from making unexpected cameo appearances.

that lens resembles the red 18-55 millimeter lens to some extent. But 11 to 16 millimeter is rather constrained and leaves a gap between it and the twenty eight millimeter of the kit lens at its widest. other than that, it looks like a very nice lens. If the CA and geometric distortions are relatively under control.

This looks about right, but oooh the price! http://www.ducloslenses.com/products/fujinon-14-5-45mm-t2-0-premier

Even if that means it delivered a slightly less than FHD image, I'd still prefer that over nothing at all.
