New Rode Wireless

Not sure how he does it, but I also do a lot of shotgun work in the field (corporate/event bites = a few feet away from people) ...Mic sits right on top of the camera or extends out a bit with a small gooseneck if lens/sensor allows..

I've thought about rigging something like this up with a Magic Arm where it can be retracted and extended easily. What gooseneck are you using?

I have different lengths but most of the time I am trying to completely knock the background out, so I'm using a tighter lens and using the longest gooseneck I could find at B&H (which is 27").

You'll need various 5/8 adapters to make it work with standard 1/4 and 3/8 rig threads.

This is B&H's gooseneck page for more options (you can filter by length on the left):

I don't know if it still exists, but I remember a nice looking camera shoe mounted boom/mic extender by Sennheiser. If someone finds it, please post

Considering getting this for low budget docs. Which lav would you pair with it?

OST Lavs are the standard recommendation for a cheap low budget lav, but once you've purchased one then you're basically at the same price per channel as the Deity Connect Wireless. So what is the point in the Rode??

Looking to buy something that is readily available in EU and has local support...

Probably in not buying expensive lav's. I'm doing a docu with lot's of dancing involved and the small size of the rodes is really looking nice. Might just use them without a lav in some situations as the wire might cause lots of issues for the breakdancers ... But still need some lav's that don't exhibit much handling noise and wont break the bank, keeping in mind the low budget nature of the rode system.

But anyway, are the bundled lav's in deity's dual setup any good?

Curtis Judd released his video review of the Deity. Apparently the noise floor isn't so good.

They have actually released a firmware update (1.1) that is addressing self-noise as well as other requests. Not sure if this improves what Curtis was finding.

Interesting, something to watch out for. Up until I watched Curtis' review, I was semi-interested. If that firmware can tame the self noise, other than that, the package is pretty appealing.

Isn’t the Rode TX smaller than the Deity? (Apart from the noise issue).

The receiver is really huge imo. The tansmitters also aren't that small compared to modern standards... But the size of the receiver is what's keeping me from ordering. Attach that to a small dslr rig and the rig becomes 2x larger hehe

Looking at used Mke2's that go around 100-150€. Any objections to using it with the rode wireless? Does the sennheiser's locking mechanism on the 3.5mm jack get in the way or something?

I'm curious about this, too. But the lack of a locking thread on the Rode does concern me if the talent is miked in a run n' gun situation or somewhere (like a parade or concert) that it would be difficult to re-attach the mic. Seems like a simple feature Rode just overlooked...

I am looking forward to hearing about how people use these and getting some quality/performance feedback. The intended use of a clip-on wireless is negated with their choice of a big logo on the black plastic. I read a suggestion on a YouTube video that they should have made the back of the clip clear plastic without a logo. Smack on the forehead moment for Rode people... Clip that on a lady in a Yellow or Red dress and it would look downright stupid.

The molded on type of a locking plug's screw-on ring generally does not retract enough to be used in a standard non-locking jack, The better quality (soldered on) Switchcraft and TecNec/Calarc locking rings retract more and will work with a non-locking jack.
The MKE 2 was popular in theater, and therefor could have been exposed to lots of perspiration. Theater mics are often put up for sale when the frequency response goes south. Base your decisions on where the pre-owned mic came from and/or test it out if possible.

I would also like to see some sound quality tests with decent preamps like on an SD or Zoom. All of the tests I have seen so far have been on crappy DSLR pres...

Tnx mate, that's great advice!

Do you guys readily change the connectors yourself?

Sooo ... the Rode wireless go drops out at 3m when shooting outside if the TX isn't in line of sight with the receiver. This includes the TX being on the back of the talent when the talen is facing forward. Looks like I'll have to pass on this one yikes!

look at 06:50 https://youtu.be/UNfXmB_blwI

After thinking about how I might want to use these (not a clip on wireless), I am not too crazy about having an omni mic as the built in mic. I prefer cardioid for a closer presence. I can see why they chose omni but I am going to pass as well.
