Based on the acceptance and popularity of their NTG-3 pictured here ..

here's the new Rode NTG-8 long shotgun, available from dealers approx late Jan 2012.

Cheers.

K-Tek's extra long zeppelin "should" work for that mic. I went to the Rode website to get the specs, and didn't see it up there, so I can't say for sure.

Grant .. yeah :)

Guys .. it should be up on Rodes site soon, maybe this weekend with the correct specs. A new Rode Blimp is planned to cater for it.

Some dealers may have jumped the gun with the price, we're about to find out.

Cheers.

just curious how many pro-audio folks pack a extra long shotgun? Is this really the right marketing move for Rode? If not audio for video, who is the intended market? I am just curious my nature.

L-o-o-o-o-ng indeed! I wonder if there are any standard blimps or windscreens that thing will fit into?

I have a pair of Sennheiser MKH 816F rifle mics. Don't use them very often, though.

The long rifle mic. is really for sports where they are fixed on stands - pointing at the cricket stumps from the side of the pitch, for golf and the like - where you need to catch the sound of a bat hitting a ball.

They are far too long and directional to be hand boomed as the slightest movement will cause a drop-out.

So they are good for cricket....what is Rode thinking?

Don't they play a lot of cricket down there?

Suoer long shotguns are mostly used for sports broadcasts and nature (bird) sounds, like John already said. There might be some half dozen or more of those rigged around a stadium to pick up game sounds.

Long shots are also used often for shots where you need more room in the frame, and need to put the mic higher.
