Met with P. Erskine, the design engineer on the ShotGrip handle. Some new stuff coming-

1. A new Cheeseplate for the FS100 is on the way. It will accept current handle and fit the same way. Approx 4x4 inch. CAD drawing will post here soon. It will not overhang the sides of camera.
2. A new bracket will be available that mounts top rods on a 60mm center over the lens.
3. We have redesigned both plates (current and new) so the block that slides into the cold shoe is no longer integral but can be unscrewed to make the baseplate/cheeseplate flat. This will permit mounting our handle to other cheesplates and many other cameras. We'll be extending a rebate to current ShotGrip owners who want this mod. Also have two more products that will intro over the winter.

The first clip below looks at the Top Handle right out of the box, the second clip shows building a camera system with our 15mm Stub Clamps.

Cool vids! I have yet to buy the FS100 but might be getting there. I'm trying to determine what my entire price tag will be to get everything in place. I'm new here so forgive me if I ask too many questions. I'm addicted to researching on the web!
I shoot mostly wildlife so far and so the Sony 18-200 lens with auto focus and stabilization really has me looking at the big imaging option.

I like your handle and have been looking at it since it came out. it looks solid for what I do. I carry my camera like a rifle usually in standby mode. (another thing I like is the rumored battery life) I'm thinking your video makes a pretty cool top based camera set up which is how I'm probably going to play things at first. Those clamps might let me do away with the weight of a baseplate and all that stuff under the camera. I can use a clip on matte box. Well I guess my question is how much for a handle based system like the one you show in this video?

Thanks in advance,

Hey thanks Peter. You can't ask me too many questions! I shot a wildlife sports show awhile ago so I know what you mean about using the camera like a rifle.

For a rig built like in the 2nd clip above, it would break down like this
Two 1/4 inch male clamps $65 each.
One 3/8 male $65
One 3/8 female $50
One 4.5 inch rod $20

One handle is still $225 so you're total price would be $490. You might not need the thumbscrew adjusts on two of those male clamps tho. I recco it for sure on a monitor/EVF tho. So that would be $460 including the handle and the standard mini cheeseplate.

I like the way you describe it as a top built system! I might have to borrow that ;)
The top mounted rods that are on the way may help you down the road too.

Hope this helps!

Caleb,

When are you guys going to design a cheap baseplate alternative? =p

Still saving up for your handle! Can't wait to get it eventually!

Michael,

Thanks man! I've got one saved away for you here somewhere. I've thought of baseplates, still running down a couple other things inbetween shoots- so I've either gotta sell more units, work more often, raise my rates.... Dont worry I won't raise prices!

Having fun, going broke, nothing new here ;)

Thanks Caleb!
I'm looking at the berkey and zacuto too and have been running then numbers. there is no doubt I like yours the most!
zacuto apparently has a clearance problem with the flip up screen which surprises me. hello big company? but there handle is actually the least expensive at 150 (!) and looks okay. the berkey is the most pricey at about 350 for cheeseplate and all the bits needed to rig up a handle (okay and it looks a bit flimsy to me anyway). So at 75 more than zacuto your handle is way cooler and gives me the mini cheeseplate - and the turning thing (cool video btw!).

I have yet to even buy the FS100. just planning still.
when do you think your new cheeseplate will be out - and how much for that? and the top rod connection?

thanks again!

Peter

Caleb !! .. maybe I'm a not so "good guy" when I'm in criticize mood ... but I'm happy to see this videos! :) - Perfect product need perfect advertising !!! Congratulations !!!

This product looks awesome and the price is great. I know this is vain, but do you, by chance, plan on releasing a handle that isn't wood colored?

Thanks!

Thanks Kyle, not at all, different strokes man! Just go to a bike shop and get some of the super tech wraps they have and presto, wood is gone. Except after a time you may want that wood look back and it's not gone ;)

Good idea, Caleb! I thought my google skills were above average, but I haven't been able to locate the hand grips and/or handlebar wrap you're talking about. Do you, by chance, know any of the products people have used? Thanks so much!

Kyle,
Sorry but you gotta find your own wrap to wreck my walnut with okay ; )

If you prefer plastic to wood tho - Zacuto makes a thermoplastic grip for less than mine costs. Check theirs out. Warning it seems they made the first version too low for the flip up screen to flip up. Might want to wait.

OK I couldn't resist - heres a link and a great new word "sticktion"

Rule Camera in Boston is now carrying the ShotGrip Top Handle and Stub Clamps. So if you're based out this way you can now check it out w/o meeting my girlfriend, my roommate and my dog ;)

I revamped the weblink below and simplified the ordering. Working at getting international ordering back up next couple days.
I'd be glad to hear any thoughts. Thx
