New! PMW300!

Im half after a replacement for my EX1 - Id like a better lens and a better image - but really 5 odd years delivers an extra 15mbs and a few more pixels on the viewfinder? Hmmm

It would be great if there was something between 1/2 usability and S35 unusability in this price class

There's a lot more to it than that - not least an upgrade path to XAVC next year. That opens the door to things like higher frame rate recording etc. I think there are also likely to be options for proxy type codecs and wireless connectivity, but it's early days for info yet. Worth looking at http://www.xdcam-user.com/2013/06/t...ement-has-finally-arrived-xdcam-422-and-xavc/

I tend to agree with Morgan. Using the same chipset with a twist is not that exciting. The EX series image is nice but left me cold. Seeing that the 4:2:2 round of updates for these cameras is out there, it looks like years before a true "better image" upgrade will be created.

Bassman....what do you mean when you say "left you cold"

Tough to say. I used to use the EX-1 along side an HPX-500 and although the EX had more resolution I was always drawn more to the Panasonic. Even though I tweaked the EX to resemble the Panasonic look. Out of the box the EX had a boring flat look imho. After setep it had a nice image no doubt but kind of clinical? Very subjective, but when I hear Sony just added a better codec option to a 4 year old camera it does not make me want to consider the purchase.

I think my 'disappointment' is the still gaping hole in the market for a camera (in the sub 15k market) that sits nicely between

S35 - "I cant focus this or buy a decent zoom (for under 34k)"

Sub 2/3 - "Footage Looks like a video camera that my aunt has"

A hole that, for some of us, is filled rather nicely by the AF100. Pro video camera features, large-enough sensor, and a couple of decent zooms (12-35 and 35-100), all for a grand total of around $6k... I know it's not the most popular product on the market, but dang, the feature set is just exactly what I want. Sure I wish it had a sharper image and more DR, but everything else is a pretty neat package.

The zooms are only 3x though....actually a little less than 3x. Which you can get with the C100/300,
FS100/700 or other larger sensor cams (decent 3x zooms that is). I think maybe the idea is, that with
a smaller than S35 sensor, a zoom could have a bit more range maybe? Since the glass has to cover a
smaller chip? How about a 12-60 f2.8 zoom on the AF100, does anyone make one of those? Seems like
it might be doable.....and popular!

I'd hope you'd pay less than 6k for the AF100 setup you describe. I only paid 7k for a FS700
(B stock but full warranty) a new 17-50 F2.8 and a 50-150 F2.8 which is about the same
zoom range you are talking about once you take into consideration the bigger chip on the
FS700.

How could you get an FS700 with two lenses for $7,000??? That seems like a heck of a deal!
Yeah it was a good deal. Omega had a B-stock FS700 which didn't qualify for the free Metabones adapter
promotion from Sony so I got a fantastic price on it. Brand new Tamron 17-50 F2.8 off EBay for $320
and B-stock 50-150 F2.8 Sigma from B&H for $400. (It's a discontinued lens as the new
version is bigger and has IS).
I wasn't meaning to suggest you can just go get this deal as I had to scour the Internet for these deals,
but still I was thinking AF100 plus lenses might be doable for 5 grand or maybe even
less if you shop around. Pretty sure a board sponsor has B-stock AF100's for $2899ish.....
pretty good deal.

I happen to be a fan of the MFT sensor size, and believe theoretically a very good camera system could be based around it, but IMO the AF100 codec is far too thin, and there are no MFT 'proper' ($5-10k?) zooms - I cant stand pulling focus on AF stills glass and ideally don't want to change lenses at all doing RnG, although I would like of course a removable lens to chuck on the 12 or 17 and other primes for the right projects..

Even S16 in a pro package would be very interesting at least there are zooms for that format.
