New PIX-E recorders/monitors from Sound Devices

These look great! Wonder how much they'll cost. I'm thinking the PIX-E7H is enough for most people, myself included (4:2:2 ProRes HQ 10-bit).

Though, really, what I want is a Hyperdeck or Ninja Star that records 4K ProRes (no built-in monitor). Keep it under $500 and it's a guaranteed hit.

That's what I'm waiting for too. The a7s looks ridiculous with a 7" monitor stuck to it without a full rig.

With some luck, the XLR module could be $1000, E7 somewhere around $2000 (so, with the XLR module, kind of competitive against the Shogun and the 7Q+), E5 maybe $1500, and E5H around $1000.

If it's well above $1000 I'll just consider myself lucky not to have to part from my money :)

But well, let's just wait patiently. Even at $1000 it would be a stretch for me, given that an external recorder is more of an expense than an investment these days...

(plus: 750 Mbps in UHD 422 HQ, 90 minutes in a 512GB drive... https://www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/docs/Apple_ProRes_White_Paper.pdf )

What's great about these, is that it sounds like they'll provide an awesome monitor, with the added benefit of also being a recorder, and being able to be a high-end audio recorder as well. That kind of versatility counts for a lot for a small business like mine.

But it only goes up to 30fps yes? That's pretty poor compared to the Odyssey - that does 60fps and even 120fps burst from FS700 at 4k. I never quite understand how companies release products with less features for the same (or more) money than those already available and expect them to sell. What am I missing?

Ask Arri. :)

They have no problem doing business that way. Not everybody looks only at features when buying. For professionals there are other more important things.

I'm looking at this for the A7s, the O7Q+ is just a little too unwieldy on a gimbal for me.

The 3G SDI is pretty limiting, it doesn't have the bandwidth for generic RAW. Only the FS700 with dedicated compressed RAW is over 3G. The O7Q has 4 SDIs to give the bandwidth potential.

RAW over HDMI is a great idea, as per the apertus axiom, but it's the camera that has to output a format like that, a recorder just records the signal.

We'll have to wait for NAB for the pricing, i've just been told it will be 'competitive', so i hope that's true. It doesn't have anywhere near the capability of the O7Q but as a 4K HDMI recorder, it's a perfect fit.

cheers
Paul

NewsFlash! PIX-E Pricing
PIX-E5H (5", 1920x1080, HDMI only) $1,195
PIX-E5 (5", 1920x1080, HDMI +SDI) $1,395
PIX-E7 (7", 1920x1200, HDMI +SDI) $1,595

Easier to read:
PIX-E5H (5", 1920x1080, HDMI only) $1,195
PIX-E5 (5", 1920x1080, HDMI +SDI) $1,395
PIX-E7 (7", 1920x1200, HDMI +SDI) $1,595

The E5H is perfect for my a7S (and my particular needs). But the new BM thing with two stops more DR than the pocket is very tempting too. But much bigger and heavier. This is going to be a hard one.

If these took the FS700 raw (and turned it into 4K ProRes) they would be interesting... But doubt they will?
And CD just upped the price of the raw option for FS700 users to $995 (for all raw options, so much cheaper for people needing more options, I just need the FS). So the price of entry for the O7Q remain too high for me, leaving me with the option of the Atomos Shogun.
I like that the competition in the recorder/monitor market is heating up!

Perfect pricing, will be grabbing an E5 for my NX1.

My advice.. dont cheap out. (like I did) if you ever need SDi (on a future or rental cam) then you will wish you spent the difference!
But... The SDI is 1080 only. So if you get it today to record 4K, what are the odds of you renting a camera to shoot 1080 in the future? The only cameras that I know that output 4K through a single 3G SDI are the FS700 and FS7, and that through a proprietary raw format. So unless they plan to support the FS raw format in the future, I'd say the SDI is pretty useless if you get the PIX-E mainly as a 4K recorder. As an extra monitor down the road, I guess SDI still could be fairly useful though.

^ That. With every new camera offering 4K now, I think the resale value of a 4K external recorder is going to fall fast, but 1080p external recorders... those will be history really soon. I think.

Yikes, yeah I thought the SDI would get 4K. HDMI only for me.

Samuel, for more 200 bucks you are going future proof and Apple ProRes 4444 XQ... It is a no-brainer.

True. Well, in this case, Samuel, you always have other options such as your fellow countrymen:
