New Picture of the AG AF100

Yes. The Hot Rod PL kit is considerably more expensive, but it is also totally different in functionality and build quality compared to the cheap-o overseas mounts sold on ebay.

I know this because I have had people send me their ebay mounts in frustration, from the sellers in Hong Kong, Poland and Korea.

Assuming you get a mount that does actually fit a lens (several do not have the correct inner diameter). None of the mounts on ebay have a shimmable flange, which means your focus marks will never line up.

Every ebay mount has play in at least 1x or more axis, which means you get unintended image shift, exactly when you don't want it- particularly when you are follow focusing.

I don't know anyone who would trust a $65,000 lens on a $320 mount without proper support. A 1/4" screw hole is not all it takes to support that mount properly.

But you don't have to take my word for it. There's not a single professional rental house I know choosing anonymous ebay sellers over Hot Rod Cameras products. There's also a couple fairly unsatisfied ebay purchasers on DVXusers who may chime in.

Here's a picture of a prototype Hot Rod PL AF100 Tuner Kit. I'll have more pics up next week.

Thanks for that info. I looked at the photo on your website.
It is a little unclear as to what you are getting for that price?
The photo you attached is not showing up.
Thanks

Hi Illya,

own the hot rod pl deluxe adapter for my gh1 - will it work with my AG-AF and what parts I may be missing and if so can I order them without having to buy a complete new set?

Thanks... rolf

Hi Rolf,

The website is undergoing updates all this week and it should be pretty much dialed-in with new product descriptions and some new photos by this coming Monday.

To answer your question, you only need 2x parts, not the complete AF100 Tuner Kit. You need the Hot Rod PL Chassis Support ($349) and the X-Baseplate ($715). You then have a PL support system capable of safely supporting the largest and heaviest PL mount lenses like the Angenieux 24-290. Obviously you still need the correct lens support for heavy lenses, just like on any other motion picture camera.

Unlike the previous Hot Rod PL Kits, the PL mount is now available a la carte. So of course if you didn't see yourself using PL mount lenses, but just wanted a proper baseplate for the AF100, this option is also available.

Not sure why the forum didn't like my attachment, but I'll attach it again.

I for got to mention. The Hot Rod AF100 Tuner Kit in the photo is the not the most recent prototype, there are a couple minor cosmetic improvements, functionally is the same.

Hi Illya,

thanks for the info. Used the Hot-Rod in one of our productions with different Zeiss' - no problems so far. Cheap adapters can become very expensive very quickly..... had this experience with photo lenses and stay now with Novoflex in this area....

On my day with the AF100, we shot with both the PL and Nikon adapters from Poland. Both seemed to work well. We were so rushed I did not have a chance to check the accuracy of the focus marks, but I will accept Illya's word that they are off and can't be shimmed to correct.

We did do what I consider a fairly difficult follow focus, a talent move from about 20 to 6 feet and then a dolly in to about 3 feet. Darin Semchuk was on the dolly and Joe Walker pulled focus on the Zeiss Standard; both hit the marks every time; not a single blown take for focus.

I am interested in the Hot Rod Camera's adapter; I want to see if the rather large price difference is worth it. It does look very well made, but I've not seen one in person.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Sorry to change the subject, but on the bottom pic of the guy (shallow dof pic) in this article. His right cheek is blown out, and the pic looks to be under exposed. Could this be from compression. Or is this my monitor messing with my eye's?
