New Panasonic Gear Announcements Apr 15

From what youre saying...they should really phase out the avccam line and replace it with the avcultra. Lower end gets avclong-g on sdcards, midrange goes to micro p2 and higher avc class. Im sure sandisk extreme could even work with avci100 on the p2adapter.
Problem is, AVCHD 2.0 supports 1080p60, whereas AVC-LongG doesn't (at least not yet, according to Panasonic's published specs).

1080/60p on SDI out is impossible. No camera ever made does it or ever could do it. HD-SDI does not have the bandwidth for it, it's limited to 1.5gbps, which is only enough to transport 720/60p or 1080/60i. The HD-SDI interface is physically incapable of transmitting 1080/60p.
But HDMI supports 1080p60.

Card is limited to 50 megaBYTES per second.

Not true. The cards will be limited to 50Mbs not 50MBs.

From the press release:

The microP2 card will ensure high-speed transfer, high reliability and the writing assurance of all P2 frame rates, formats and codecs, as well as Panasonic’s newest compression platform, up to the AVC-Intra200 mode of AVC-ULTRA, which will be available within 2013. Furthering the versatility of the microP2 card adaptor, its design allows Class 10 or high-quality SD cards (at bit rates only up to 50Mbps) to be used in P2 products in emergency situation

Original press release link.

And to quote dcloud: he said that "50mbs is still
enough for a 100mbps avc intra.". I think that he made a mistake, as I don't see how a 50Mbs rated card could record 100Mbs for more than a second or 2 if at all.

This cards will be artificially limited as to help the microP2 sales.

That seems to be saying that regular Sandisk/Lexar etc. Class 10 cards can be used through the card adapter for codecs up to 50Mbps - Not that the micro-P2 cards themselves are limited to that.

oh my bad. misread it as megabytes. so it can only do LongG type of footages. well if people dont buy it enough im sure theyll do something baout it :D

anyway, this firmware fee is starting to sound ridiculous. is this truely the best way to go with it?

Yes. You'll have to buy Panasonic cards which will be expensive I have no doubt about that.

Why aren't we using PCMCIA card adapters? Are they not compatible? Example.

I did, it was not an easy decision but I am glad I went down the Sony route, FS100 though just thrown a curve seems like a better path to me as well.
I will say this in the softest way possible - because I've gotten into trouble before here - but I think Panasonic really has shown that they're not as invested in the digital cinema market niche (large sensor, removable-lens, digital filmmaking equipment - as opposed to broadcast) as much as Sony, Canon and RED are.

I say that w.r.t. what I see in line card of camera offerings, things like firmware updates, and overall presence and emphasis. And of course, this is just my own observation and analysis and opinion.

And if I'm right, then I think that's just their choice for their business, and that's fine.

But me, I was hoping for more than what they've offered, sooner.

I think I may go down the FS100/FS700/F3/F5 path from here on in...

Oh how we long for the DVX100 days! Seems like Panny has lost their way as of late; charging for so called upgrades - god I'd be livered with them. Are they doing a FCPx / Apple stint here? Sticking the finger to the lower priced market and just going after high end broadcast market - seems like it? Seems to be a big hole in the $5k to $15k market and picture wise I'd probably go with a FS100 vs AF100 even with the funky ergonomics. Pity, they have the codec don't they but what the hell have they been doing for the past year?

If you make a customer happy they'll tell five friends, piss em off and they'll tell 5000!

Also, remember lads + lasses these are just companies, Red and it's Scarlet bu11$hite, Sony has buggered up in the past too. They are not out friends, just businesses and this is just part of the cycle of innovation but don't ever think they are our friends! Panny will come back and I'll be here reaming Sony. Just seems that in 2012 Panny is dipping in innovation and Sony are on top. My 2c / [end of rant]

HPX600 with color viewfinder for 18K. Not including a lens, so in reality, more like 20 to 22K, plus battery, plus...
4 years ago this would have given the pmw 350 a good run for the money. I think the market for this camera is much
smaller now.

These boards are getting more and more like watching parents at a little league baseball game in my opinion.....

We're pretty damn lucky to have all the choices we have.

As a long time Panasonic enthusiast and early adopter of the HVX200 I have been hoping for a Panasonic product for my latest upgrade. I tried the DSLR route and hated it. I was steered to the FS100 by someone at Abel Cine. I have held off because I wanted to do the research on the AF100 and see what happens at NAB. So I am sad to say that I am disappointed that Panasonic has chosen to offer a broadcast oriented camera instead of a cine style device or an upgrade to the AF100. That's OK. I'll bet the HPX600 will be an awesome product, but for my needs I am probably going to have to choose the FS700. Maybe I will switch back at some point (I'll keep my HPX170s) but to my taste, the S35 sensor is indeed the sweet spot for narrative fim making. Please don't jump on me. I have tried to express myself as respectfully as possible. CHEERS!!

ksteiger- Going with a camera that meets your needs makes more sense then tying yourself to a brand to me..... Your wallet is the ultimate voice in the market place.

I'd prefer not to spend 10k, but Sony and Panasonic are both reputable products that support their customers well.
