New Panasonic 4K 60P Camcorder HC-X1000

The highlight rolloff is not exactly gentle in the clips I have seen so far. Hope to see someone expose somewhat to the left and then grade....

The Australian Panasonic web sight put up a price of $3999

With the current US-AUS exchange rate, that works out at not that much different, and most of the time you can get things cheaper down here than what Pany say :)

Here in the US the only retailer in stock is B&H, but they are also the only one to not include the free 64gb U3 memory card that every other authorized retailer is including- strange. I'm waiting for Adorama to get in stock...

It seems that's because the card was part of a pre-order deal. So now that B&H has them in stock, it's no longer a pre-order and no longer offered. They had that offer too before they got stock. Kinda sucks.

UPDATE: Called B&H and they're sending me the card (no charge) as a price match to Adorama. Thanks for the heads-up, vanvideo.

Am going to call B&H and see what the story is with the card.

Did my first shoot with the X1000.

Got it late Monday and had a shoot first thing Tuesday morning. Normally, I’d never use a new camera on a gig without first having had a chance to get to know it. But this was a run ’n gun about drones and figured it would be the perfect time to test out the advanced auto features that Barry had confirmed and speculated about. Mostly because I’ve never been especially good with manual anything in really fast-changing conditions. And so knew this shoot would be challenging for me - even with a camera I knew well. So I decided to go for it with the X1000 and shoot in iA.

Now, you should understand that I have never used auto anything on an actual shoot before - except PUSH AF. And I’ve owned and used a GH1, 2, and now a GH4. Also AF100s and an AC160a (which I sold to buy the X10000). Sure, I always tested out the auto features when each of these cams were new, but that usually lasted for about 30 seconds and only confirmed that my standard mantra of always shoot manual everything was still valid. I am normally loathe to even considering switching any camera to iA.

Barry… you are so right - things have changed BIG time. I’ll try not to gush too much over this camera because I’ve only just started using it, but keeping my enthusiasm in check will be hard based upon what I’ve experienced so far.

First and maybe foremost, the auto focus on this thing is just plain SICK! You really have to use it to understand just how fast and accurate it is. I swear it’s like it’s analyzing a scene and intelligently figuring out what you’d want to focus on. And then nailing focus almost as fast as your eyes would. Okay, maybe I’m exagerrating - and I am in my late 60s, but it is unbelievably wicked-fast and accurate. And I’m talking about continuous auto - not push auto. For anyone who’s ever been exasperated with the auto focus on an AC160a, this camera will seem like a gift from the gods. I would unequivocally never hesitate to use this camera in auto focus for any run ’n gun shooting. You can even point it into a forest and start zooming in and out and will be amazed at the intelligence and quickness of the auto focus. It interprets depth on an incremental scale like no other camera I’ve ever used before. It’s simply uncanny and an absolute joy to use. Perfect? Of course not. But you can quickly adjust for those rare times it may miss focus. This camera does not noticeably hunt. Oh yeah, and low light auto focus is also the best I’ve ever seen.

Prior to the shoot, the only thing I had time to do was configure the USER buttons and figure out button and switch locations and functions, etc. For the shoot I left the X1000 on the default SCN1 setting and shot 4K/60p 150M with the cam in iA mode. Chose 4K over 1080 because I’d be pulling stills from the footage later in FCPX.

Shoot was out in a soybean field in semi-overcast to partly cloudy varying conditions. There were a couple of people operating the drones. Lots of ground to sky shots, people holding and operating the drones, etc. Apologize for not posting some footage or grabs, but am crazy busy with other projects and will do so when time allows and am sure I have permission to do so. But wanted to at least share some first impressions.

So one of the drones was all white. And that’s the only thing that was ever blown out in any of the footage using iA. And it was only the brightest parts of the drone that were blown out. I doubt it would even be noticeable unless you were looking for it. Especially since it wasn’t ugly chroma clipping like you might expect with an AF100 or any of the GH series. Overall the footage looks great.

In short, I couldn’t be more pleased and am very happy I bought this camera. Can't wait to see what it can do once I've had a chance to really know how to properly use it and play with the settings. Barry was entirely right when suggesting people may be pleasantly surprised by the advanced technology in this little gem. It kind of blows me away.

Barry, are you writing a book on it? Hope so. Have found your previous books on the AF100 and AC160 very useful and informative.

This sounds like all my dreams have come true at once. Or have you just got a payoff from Panasonic tflak?

Can't wait to see some footage! Especially if it's fast motion.

This does sound pretty amazing ... But how is low light ??? Is it better or worse than your old ac160 and af100?

I am interested in knowing about low light as well. And Autofocus that works is a big issue for me.
I was waiting to see if there would be a new version of the ac160. I read that tflak sold your ac160 to buy the x1000. Would you say that this camera is better then the ac160, or better for your needs?
Would love to see the difference between the ac160 and the x1000. Picture quality, low light, overall handling.
And would love to know if Panasonic is going to release a newer model of the ac160, or if this is the camera to get. ( I assume that answer is hard to find)
Most of my experience is with the HMC150, and looking to get a newer camera to work with 4k, although most of my clients still just want 1080.
thank you for your time.

they mentioned to shoot at night that you would need an ir emitter. anygood suggestion on a good one to use with this camera?

Does anyone else find it interesting that this camera has been for sale on B&H for about two weeks and no one has left a review there yet.

Or how about the lack of test footage posted on YouTube and Vimeo. It just seems like with every other new camera we see test footage flooding the web even before the camera is officially released. I am also perplexed at the lack of review units Panasonic sent out to bloggers and review sites in advance. You would think they'd want to drum up publicity for this cam.

Who knows.... maybe people are so in love with the x1000 that they're too busy shooting to stop and post a review or upload test footage.

By the way, if Barry is still here I wanted to ask if he has opinion on how the x1000 compares with the 270. Panasonic is offering a rebate for people to upgrade to a 270 and I'm wondering if I should or just get the x1000.

I think it's to do with Pansonics new 'stealth' policy....don't tell anyone and if it's any good it'll sell anyway....Saves a fortune on advertising and publicity department wages! (LOL)

Certainly the specs and Barry's enthusiasm seem to be heading the sales push at the moment. The AU version has just been delayed a week until middle of November, at least that's what my dealer told me!

Cheers, Vaughan

I found quite a few videos shot by the X1000 on YouTube. Many were shot in Japan. I won't go through the trouble of linking them all, you guys can do a search yourselves, but here's one of a bus station in relatively low light conditions:

You can decide for yourselves if this camera is adequate in low light. I don't expect a lot coming from a 1/2.3" chip with dense 4K pixels. Obviously, it won't look like a C300.

Probably going to order this very shortly, in the next week or so. Does anyone have any reason not to?! It's my first camera. It needs to be versatile!

I am still one of those that knows there is a place and a job for this type of camera.

I think we have to keep the low light performance in perspective a bit. Sure the sensor is smaller but the lens also starts out at f1.8 as opposed to many DSLR zoom lenses that start out at f3.5. Thats a pretty significant jump in brightness. We also have to factor in this is a 30mm to 600mm zoom lens based on 35mm standards. That is a huge super zoom lens. How much would that lens cost and weigh on a full frame sensor or even on m43. Could a lens like this even start out at f3.5? I doubt it. Many super zooms have half of this range and start out at f4.0 or worse. a DSLR lens like this may have to start out at f5.6 which means the smaller sensor is not as much of a concern anymore.

Yes compared to primes this cameras low light ability will never stand up to a DSLR but why would one use a video camera like this in the place of primes? These type of cameras are used for live productions where using a prime is just impractical. If one needs a super zoom you can choose a F4.0 zoom on a larger sensor or a f1.8 zoom on a smaller sensor. I can't exactly tell you how that all compares in terms of image or numbers but it does level the playing field a lot. We all know how dark the 14-140 lens is on the GH4. You really need to compare the GH4 with that lens next to this new camera to really see how they stack up in similar shooting needs.
