New Panasonic 4K 60P Camcorder HC-X1000

Further to the previous answer, it's been pointed out to me that the X70 seems to be the pro version to the consumer AX100, and shares many common components. Since the AX100 already records 4k internally, it seems almost certain the X70 will handle 4k the same come the upgrade. The question that hasn't been answered is why - if the AX100 can do it from day one - why the wait for 4k on the X70? Best guess seems to be that a higher bitrate version is hoped for - though that beings up the question of memory spec.

The expectation also seems to be it won't be free - but may bring other features as well. Even then, the upgrade price is still likely to leave the X70 cheaper than the X1000.

Here's my WAG on this issue: If Sony is just enabling 4K internal recording at 50 mbps then it (firmware update) will likely be free, or at worst, relatively low cost. My further speculation is that the delay in this "upgrade" is due to the wrapper change in XAVC vs XAVC S. That difference could also explain the apparent delay in plugins for various NLE's. Granted, that's a pretty sketchy 'claim' and I'll probably laugh at myself when whatever the upgrade comes out. :zombie_smiley:

Exciting times indeed to have Panasonic and Sony going mano-a-mano with such cool new HW.

cheers

Someone over at dvinfo checked all the XAVC formats from the X70 and found they are all 4:2:2 10bit... so, maybe that's why the charge for the future upgrade because it'll be 4K at 4:2:2 10bit? Seems logical.

Question for Barry if possible.

Barry, how does the dynamic range of the HC-X1000 compare to the AC130/160 duo? We have both for event work and now I mix them in with a Sony AX100 wide shot (using 4K to give me detail), but find the Sony doesn't have the dynamic range of the Pansonics, although you can lift the XAVCS codec much further than AVCHD.

I'm also thinking that the X1000 recording in high bitrate .mov would offer me more latitude in post than AVCHD, especially for dance schools and facial definition?

Cheers,

Vaughan

I haven't done comprehensive dynamic range testing because the unit I had access to was an early prototype. I did run some testing on it, but just for curiousity purposes, not for definitive answers, as things were still subject to change. On the prototype, in Cine-D with DRS on 3, it was capable of rendering 12 distinct stops on a professional dynamic range test chart. I don't know how the final version will fare.

Amazing, like what more can we ask for? i think we have so much to create a masterpiece the price of this camera is great, now lets get to creating art.

Does anyone know if the x1000 uses the CGA or the VW type batteries (like the ones used in the AC160/130 or AF100)?

Barry... just image wise... how would you compare it to the GH4... if my chance you got a big screen release... I think it has a 1/3 sensor... wasn't that the size of the DVX100 sensor... and I had a few shots uprezzed for HD on a project that had a limited run and it worked okay...

I like the idea of having 60p for a few slowmo shots...

I haven't used a GH4 so I don't have any firsthand experience with it to compare. The sensor is small as compared to the GH4's sensor. If you want the shallow-DOF look of the GH4, then the HC-X1000 is not the right camera for that use. It does many things well, but shallow DOF isn't one of them...

I downloaded the manual and have been scouring through it to find if you can overcrank with this camera. I see they have a time lapse option but nothing about overcranking. Is it possible with this unit?

Thanks,

Chris

As Mike Warren says, it doesn't have a specific "overcranking" feature, like the AC160 does. But you can always shoot the bulk of your project in 24p and then swap over to 30p, 50p, or 60p for three different levels of slow motion in your project.

That makes me feel a little better. I have been shooting action sports for years with an HPX-170. I have grown accustomed to overcranking to get the slow motion. I was all set to pull the trigger and order one next week. Knowing there is a way to still get slow motion helps.

Thanks for the response guys.
