New PAL user confused

Hi All,
I've just got my GH1 (secondhand and previously hacked), and I've also downloaded the hack for a look around. I'm finding it confusing browsing thru the 100's of threads (C settings, B settings, versions etc). Where can I find a sample of the latest PAL settings for good quality trouble free shooting with 50i and 50/25p. Cheers, Rob

generally settings are universal between pal and ntsc if you dont mess with GOP values. if you click on bitrates a pop up will appear that will suggest B C settings for the latest ptools. You can always download and install user ini files like lpowel's and all you have to do is just load it onto ptools, but that takes the fun away from actually familiarizing yourself with ptools itself.

you copy it to the same dir where ptools or where the ABCDEFGHI presets are saved to. open up the custom ini file in notepad to see which letter it is allocated to and click on that letter in ptools to load it. this is going off the top of my head as i have only breezed through it once to familiarise myself to procedures.

this was the video that gave me the confidence to go ahead with the hack...

i'm a PAL user also and i only changed the AVCHD bitrates to the suggested C settings within ptool, i left everything else alone.

worked for me but remember as everything in life, do it at your own risk

Another newbie question! I've just bought this GH1 that was already hacked.
Is there a way to load the settings to see what has been already set before I play with any changes?

Cheers, Rob

Simple answer - no.

I'm a PAL user and followed both the video (above linked) and the lpowell settings (see above) to achieve great results as a complete novice hacker.
I would advise studying the video and lpowell threads.

My final PAL confusion -
I can drop my AVCHD PAL footage straight into FCP for editing (I've read), but do I still need to unwrap the AVCHD? In other words, do I still need something like Neoscene to convert my PAL AVCHD to ProRes 422, or should I drop straight into FCP with the sequencer set at ProRes 422?

chrisso,
Just go to Log and transfer in FCP ...point to your PRIVATE folder on your SD card and FCP will do the rest.

Cheers, Rob

It might be of interest to other PAL users that applying "C" settings works reliably (with class 10 Sandisk)...but you also get in camera playback of the AVCHD files. Native AVCHD editing is also very straightforward in EDIUS 5.5.

I'm using three GH13's with these same PAL settings and never had a problem. My other GH13 hacked with NTSC "C" settings does not allow in camera AVCHD playback...and requires a somewhat better spec computer to edit/play the AVCHD. Must be the extra processing overhead required for pulldown and whatever else goes on with NTSC.
