New Owner - Sony F35 - HARD RESET?

Hello,

I just want to introduce myself. I am Rick... I'm a filmmaker based in NYC, friends of MacGregor since the 90's. We are both from Madrid and worked together on several projects (in case you are interested, I am the butt naked actor in "The Moment After"...

MacGregor introduced me to his work with the F35, and when I was looking for a new camera for my projects, he really persuaded ;) me to go down the F35 avenue... I've been stalking the forum for a few months now, and really, this community is amazing. Just want to thank everyone for their contribution to this forum. I have found a lot of great info.

So, I pulled the trigger and I have a F35 (eBay purchase) sitting on my desk, a couple of PL lenses, some Sony V-mounts and a Blackmagic Video Assist hooked up via Monitor A SDI. Everything works, I have an image and the menus on the camera display show the basics. I can set the Framerate, Gamut, Shutter... BUT the previous owner, who had a viewfinder, seemed to have sent me a camera with the menus locked out of the Monitor A/B and IF outs. So I can't access anything that doesn't show on the camera display window. I have tried to hit the wheel, Menu and Cancel/Status buttons in combinations... no success. Tried the different SDI ports, no luck.

Does anyone know how to do a Factory Reset? Is there a combination of buttons to press that anyone knows of? I have searched through the manuals but the only reset I see possible is with access to the menus, which I don't have.

Alternatively... any Sony F35/F65 owners in NYC that own a Sony ViewVinder who can help me unlock the menus out of my Monitor SDI's?

Thanks to anyone who may help out... and lets get this F35 working in some projects!

Hi, Rick. This may seem like an oversimplified solution but have you tried reaching out to the previous owner you bought from on Ebay? I've found that getting in touch with the previous owner helps tremendously. This happened a couple years back to me when getting an F3 and the guy was super gracious in helping out. Just a thought. Haven't had to deal with that with the F35 yet as the previous owner left things in a pretty straightforward manner.

From memory, I think there's just a physical button on the side of the camera that controls the display of the menus. Though I'm coming up blank on the actual process.

You have to match settings between your recorder and camera manually.
Pretty sure, you won't be able to access your F35 internal menus without a compatible viewfinder.
I've read you can hook your F35 up to your computer via ethernet to access the viewfinder menus. Never done it though.
Is it possible to take it to a camera shop in your area and borrow or buy a compatible viewfinder?
I would let you use mine, but I'm in Japan, and the last time I sent something out of this country, when it came back they tried to rape me for import fees...

+1 to the eithernet port. You should be able to access everything from there. Other than that you will need to track down a viewfinder.

Hi guys! Thanks for your solutions!

I tried the ethernet, but the factory default address had been changed.

I did fix it, as some of you guys suggested with another VF. I actually called Ed David and he helped me out yesterday and now I have access to everything and I am up and running in CineEI mode. Ed lives in Brooklyn and I met him in the past. Texted him and asked him if he had a VF for his F65. He has! We connected it and got it all sorted out. Thanks for the offers on VF too! Japan is a little far, but desperate times could have called for desperate measures!

Wonderful camera, you guys... looking forward to shooting something this week. I have a small fiction short that we are shooting with it, and I am throwing myself into it with the camera. Testing some today and right into it. Wish me luck.

Great to hear.
Post your screengrabs!!
F35 is a beautiful camera.
Glad a fellow DVX10000 was able to help!

I have been just letting the fans blast at MAX, since i cannot get the fan speedd settings to change. Also, i have a warning message that reads “SHUTDOWN CAMERA/FAN MAX”.

I am going to open up the camera and check the dust levels inside. I recall when i first was goong through the menus, i was able to change the fan settings, but the camera no longer seems to allow it. As i rotate the dial to change the fan settings, the fan speed keeps automatically reverting to “MAX” within a feaction of a second. I don’t want to fry the camera, so i am fine with it on max, but the fan does get heard in a quiet interview or dialogue scene.

Another way to reset the F35 is run the firmware update. It's interesting every F35 I have bought through rental houses (4 at this point) all came with older firmware.

There are 4 fans inside the F35. Camera will run without side panel, pop it off and see if fans are going.

1. On Top of the CCD Unit, Get to this one taking the top dock off. Although you could see it and clean it from the side. There should be a piece of foam on the fan intake, clean this with water it is usually filthy. Clean with can of air, try not to spray into CCD.
2. The Two vertical fans on the Rear by the SDI ports. This panel is a pain in the ass but it does come off and makes cleaning inside easy.
3. The power supply has a fan which sucks air in from the bottom back vent on the bottom of the camera. This fan is very hard to get all the way into.

All the fans are 12v 40mm 3 pin standard pc fans. There is a little controller board for each fan, if this is broken, there should be some sign of damage as it is a simple PCB.

I am curious about this issue, I have seen a few cameras now with a fan stuck at full issue.

Thank you, i just purchased the fans. You mentioned cables, should i buy new cables as well?
