New Orleans grabs

Went down to New Orleans recently to do some shooting. Wasn't able to do the lower wards unfortunatly since I couldn't find anyone to go with me and I didn't want to wander around down there alone with around 8k work of camera equipment.

The Lake shots are overly noisy since I must have hit the gain switch at some point on accident and didn't notice till later.

Lookin' good.

Lake Ponchitrain takes forever to drive across if I'm thinking about the right lake.

I'm doing 720p24pN. The Settings vary from place to place. I believe these were Cinelike V with Cine Gamma, detail +4, V-Detail +5, and detail coring 0. The Lakefront pictures had quite a bit of color correction. Here is the origional of the one on top for instance:

Took into combustion and made a mask of the top part so I could up the contrast on the parking lot and get some more detail without losing it in the rest of the image.

And yeah, Ponchitrain is huge and takes even longer these days since they seem to have more cops to stop us from speeding :(

David, They look very nice. The detail of where the level of the water was is quite striking. I have worked down there a lot, most recently before Katrina on Dukes of Hazzard. I don't think it will ever be the same, and if it was the same as before Katrina it wouldn't be a good thing. Too much abject poverty in most of Nawlin's. I hope the people find their way without going back to the poverty they were living in in the lower ninth. Good job though.

wow are these raw or colorgraded? The contrast and colors in the 4th one are striking...The bircks are rather vibrant. I like it! There didn't appear to be too much noise IMO.

Yeah, the poverty was always an issue. I don't want that to change but right now I kind of just want my city back. I hope people don't forget that just because the media has stopped talking about New Orleans doesn't mean the city has just gone away. We still have a huge amount of work to be done.

The destroyed Lakefront stuff has had some CC. I posted a camera origional of the first shot to give an example of how the color grading went (that one had the most extreme work done on it). The rest of the pictures though (Autobon Park and the Lake) are strait from the camera (I think one or two shots are perhaps a bit darkened but that's it). The nosie is thankfully not visible in these since they are shrunk for net and only 2/3 the full size.

David, I live here, got tons of video and photos from the day after all through now. If you're ever here and want to ride the lower 9th, I'll go with you. I have a nice van that I like to shoot from (sides, back, all opened up, CineSaddle, it rocks).

I did property damage documentation for several home and business owners right after the floods. If you're ever up for it, contact me. I'm just wrapping up a project of the Anniversary for a documentary the N.O. Video Access Center is producing for some grant. Let me know.

We're about to launch a Digital Filmmakers Institute program, a cooperative effort from NOVAC and L.I.F.T. We also want to re-start the New Orleans FCP Users Group, and possibly a N.O. DVX/HVX users group. NOVAC lost the Canon stuff they had and now shoots with a DVX100b.

If you're in town, come check out the NOVAC shorts fest in a couple of weeks. I'll be teaching some classes there. Drop me a line! Here's some shots from a Canon Rebel XT I got on the day of the anniversary, all lower 9th. Be glad to drive you around if you want!

I left out the photos of the dead rats on the street in front of the abandoned grade school in the lower 9th. I mean, if the rats can't survive...

Iwould turn down your detail... they have that "sharpness filter" look....i think turning up detial is always really unneeded and just leads to problems.

Great stuff Ben and I'll drop you a line next time a shoot. Definatly would be great to get more of a Pansonic network going in the New Orleans area.
