Sony is at it again, announced yesterday is a new filter option (CBK-55F2K) which according to sony will allow you achieve a more "softer, more organic image" when in 4k or 2k RAW mode.

I wonder if this is like 1/4 Hollywood Blackmagic filter to give more "ARRI Alexa" like appearance?

There is some speculation this is to reduce moire and aliasing, but nothing formally released or details given by Sony.

Or no OLPF like the new Nikon 7100.

From scouring the Sony forums it seems really its a filter (OLPF) optimized more for 2k RAW shooting, but can be used when shooting 4k mode as well for a "softer" image.

I suspect the timing of this release comes for when 2k RAW mode shooting becomes available via firmware later this month.

Sorry, I was being a bit sarcastic. On the serious side wouldn't you rather use a filter on your lens or a softer Cooke lens than mess with the OLPF filter near your sensor?

Reading between the lines (ha ha) the cam(s) 55/5/700 is not performing well at 2k raw. (we have seen clues of this) this is kind of to be expected as the filter should soften the res to just above the res of the sensor - change the res and you must change the filter - makes perfect sense.

Now it seems like it is going to add a level of complexity to operation probably each project you would undertake with a filter. So is your project 4k60p (drama) or 2k/240p - corporate/event/pop vid ?

Slightly more annoying is the S16 mode will probably look a bit too soft with the stronger filter (like Red!) - yet the S16 mode hits the 'corp/event/pop vid' sweet spot

I think we now have three cameras..!
4k dramacam
2k corp pop cam
16mm eng cam

Great - but you will need to know which you are taking out in the morning IMO!

HFR in center crop mode will not have this issue, as there is no pixel binning happening in that case.

Yes the filter is mainly to improve the image quality when shooting 2k RAW derived from full 4k sensor.

Im not buying this casual attitude myself.

Bottom line is that if you are shooting a Serious Corporate Mr Shirt or his expensive corporate brick HQ, your footy is going wonko if you shoot 2kRaw

Dinking with front of lens filters is a good reason to stick with the FS100 or buy a BMC if front of lens filters were my thing - they are not - way too slow

Sony didnt make the filter for fun.

..but hats off to Sony for doing this, because in an HD pipeline this will probably be great.

Personally im a fan of the concept of 2k raw - great colour, and should be way more efficient than the SRcodec, and now no moire. Wonderful.

I wonder if it would be possible to have them on a filter wheel like ND and slide them in and out?

I know from other threads many are looking at this as some type of mishap or issue with the F5/F55 but on the contrary when have you seem someone as big as Sony deliver so much into a camera in terms of features, codecs, add-ons, not to mention engage with the end-user, etc..

Kudos to Sony. Looks like they have finally learned to sing a different tune.

Edit replying to wrong thread :)

The only 'mishap' is if the 700/Ody delivers better HD (by4kcompressed+downscaling) than the naked5 using an onboard codec and of course the 700/ody does actual 4k too!

It strains where one should put ones $$

If they enabled 4k on the naked5 it would all gel.

The 55 would still have more FPS and Globalshutter to keep its price point

Why would FS700 deliver better HD than XAVC and SRcodec on F55/F5?
