New OLED Sony HDVF works with F35

the problem is they will not be selling cheap anytime soon because every tv truck will want them.

Yes it would be nice to see one actually plugged into F35 but I am 99% certain if it works with F65 analog EVF port, it will work with F35. F35 accepts the HDVF line of viewfinder: it is the HDVF line, not the DVF line that goes with the F5/F55. There was a while Mac was testing cheap Sony viewfinders with the same port but these are all SD and will not work, any HDVF model will work. HDVF-20A is B+W but still HD, this is the cheapest Sony EVF you will find but they seem to stay around $800 and are usually very beat up.

Oof, i sold my c30 way too cheaply. Thought because it had a slight burn on the very top edge that it wasn’t worth much. I liked having it, but kept hitting the mattebox when using CP.2. Making the “compact” in CP a reality. Haha.

At the end of the day, i don’t entirely miss the sony evf, because the placement was uncormfortable, and i would’ve had to machine something to get it right. And once a third party monior is dialed in, that is it. I do miss the diopter thought. That was better than my current evf. The cineroid retina diopter is pretty bad. I’ll upgrade it asap. The screen and functions are good though. I like having waveforms that don’t cover the image, and the cineroid retina does that. The sony evf uses zebras, and i found myself a little unaccustomed to exposing that way. Would really have to dial in an inage settingni trusted, but in any case, my exposure was off with the Sony EVF.

have you seen blackmagic EVF? Wooden camera and Tilta make kit to make it HSDI. My one concern is how it will handle the F35 psf, now you could always go through 7Q and make almost any EVF work. I like having evf directly attached to camera monitor out with menu's up and then the dual link is clean feed. I must admit more and more to just using the 7Q, I really like the focus zoom magnification feature especially if you are trying to keep a face in perfect focus. I bought a 3d printed hood for my iPad Air made for drone use that happened to be very close to 7q size, it is much better than the stock 7Q hood. I just don't want to spend 2k on Zacuto eye but that does seem like the ticket for right size and compatibility of F35, I would rank that as the top right now.

I used cineroids for years, they burn so easily is my biggest complaint otherwise it's a nice size and like you said good set of features.

Haha, i have a Cineroid with a burn hole in it on my shelf. They burn so easy. And they get very hot. ....but all the features and passthrough hd-sdi.

I almost refuse to buy Zacuto because of how low quality they are for the price. I prefer to stick to traditional cinema brands when i can, and occasionally a smallrig or wooden camera part. Vocas and Arri have been my favorite parts.

I picked up a SR1 ssd recorder, so i am goong to hold off on the 7Q. But the 7Q seems like the most versatile recorder to date. I should have bought one a long time ago.

So the current config is a cineroid evf and a smallhd bright. And that covers my needs. The Sony OLED seems so nice. May end up hitting the mattebox for me.

Saying all of this, makes me wish there was another brand making EVF’s. Though EVF is used less and less but other shooters that i see.

It is expensive... but could solve a lot of problems...

James, I believe the C30WR with its better screen and electronics is incredible for nailing exposure. Others have agreed.
Did you ever use the B&W mode shifting the DR in a False Color kind of way.

Not sure about the C30W but the C30WR is so good I am still going through the trouble to custom build the perfect mount.

I played around with the bw mode, but not sure about shifting the DR. If shooting often withnit, i could learn to trust it, but i very much dislike zebras for anything but ENG. after shooting with a 60D for hundreds if hours, i could nailed the exposure based on the LCD screen, so just becoming accustomed to an EVF/LCD and camera combo goes a log way. With the C30 i did feel i was seeing more of the video signal, and the customization was really great. But with customization comes variability and that was throwing me off.

Image with he option to toggle waveforms is my favorite way to expose in digital video.

From reading, it appears the C30W is the same EVF but less susceptible to sun burn.

This is how I've preferred to operate for YEARS. I don't see how guys shoot with a waveform up in their VF. Not nearly enough real estate. I don't even like zebras up. I'll bump them on for a second or two sometimes...

I want the new OLED and I've always been a proponent of getting great VF for your camera, but even I can't justify spending that much money on one, today. I did some work for Sony the other year and had talked to them about maybe getting a deal/trading on a new monitor, maybe I can get them to work a deal on the new EVF instead... Hmmm... Wishful thinking?

also it's cool you got SRR1, if you look on eBay there is F35 listed for 10k Otto parts and in his package he has special IF box designed for the SRR1. Maybe he will park with just that box. It is a shorter IF box with dual link output and 4 pin to power SRR1. Did you look back at the really interesting thing Viddovation was doing with his SRR1?

I can't remember the company that made that special IF Box. What are SRR1 limitations? Can it do 12-bit? I can't remember anymore.

I always wondered if you could make SRR1 into SRR3 using SRW1 connection. It's such a bummer Sony didn't release SRR3, SRR1 is still very good, but the SRR3 would of integrated with F35 and offered everything it has to offer.

And that record button on the side would work.

I've been hunting the ancient SRW1's actually. The trick is finding them with all 3 upgrade boards because most sellers don't know wtf you are talking about. I like the idea of playing around with SRW1 for speed ramping. Correct me if I'm wrong, the SRW1 and Codex with F35 "WET DOCK" are the only recorders which connect to F35 dock port.

That is pretty cool.

I was acutally considering modding my if box to make it lower profile.

When the tecorder arrives this week, maybe i can drop it off with you, if you want to test it. As my F35 is down for a few weeks and foreseeable future. To be honest, i bought it so that i could get record confirmation in the evf, not for 12bit, haha. But if it has the higher bit rate functionality, that is a plus.

Did anyone figure out if these work with the F35?

I feel like getting a EVF for the F35 is a jungle to figure out.

How so?

There were two EVF's that were specifically made for the series of cameras that the F35 was a part of. Any other EVF's working would be merely a result of Sony using a consistent connection and video format to feed said EVF. But I think it doesn't get any more straight forward and simple finding an EVF as it is with cameras like the F35.

The two EVF's are:

C30 and the updated C30W
and the C35

Any other EVF's that work, are up to you to look into Sony documentation. Find out which cameras are compatible with the EVF you are looking at and see if you can find a bread crumb trail back to the F35. Or just call Sony and ask their tech support, because sometimes they know or can figure this stuff out.

hope that helps.

If there is one thing I know, Sony support is not helpful.

I get which to was made for it. But would love to know which that actually works.

That ENG OLED looks great if it works.

If you plan to buy an OLED evf from Sony, I am sure they can get the information for you.

But if you don't want to talk to Sony, you can follow the bread crumb trail....

EVF's between the F35 and the PDW-F800 are compatible

EVF's between the PDW-F850 and PDW-F800 are compatible

EVF's between the F23 and F65 are compatible

EVF's between the F23 and F35 are compatible

EVF's between the F65 and PDW-700 are compatible.

The OLED Sony HDVF-EL20 is compatible with the F65 and PDW-F850 according to the Sony website, and compatible with the F800 according to BH.

From there you can see that the chances of this OLED EVF working with the F35 are pretty high. These things run analogue HD signal in the round 20pin, so that may make them more easily backwards and forwards compatible.

Now I feel like a complete idiot :grin:

Thank you

It’s really simple. If product has HDVF in the name it will work with F35.

F65 has old style HDVF viewfinder port but also some have upgrade kit which adds F55 viewfinder. Notice the F55 viewfinder isn’t named HDVF. If it’s HDVF it will work, if not HDVF it will not.

I’ve found the black and white HDVF-200’s can be found cheap. I have one I bought for under $300.

I’ve also heard the new OLED one can flicker.

These EVF’s will always hold value to all the Sony TV Trucks out there, they were not hung out to dry like the F35.
