I'm seriously considering building a new editing system around a new RTX 2080ti card and the new Threadripper chips..... but then I wouldn't have any free time for when my system is rendering.
Just only do 8K footage and always more ambitious VFX, that will give you back your free time to enjoy your quiet cups of coffee during renders!
What price does everybody think it will come in at? $1299? $999?
I have to say, I was quite disappointed with NVidia over the whole bitcoin miner price blowup. I thought they should have offered some kind of 'discount to normal pricing' for system builders but they chose the path of greed as expected. Many folks who have purchased a lot of cards from them over the years just got shoved out in the cold imho.
It is the classic law of economics: supply vs demand.
Is demand goes sky high, and supply can't keep up, then prices go up high too!
But I'm hoping for a silver lining:
1) secondhand prices should drop very low when crypto miners need to dumb their GPUs on the market
2) if the GPU manufacturers misjudge the next demand cycle (because miners buy less, for whatever one of many possible reasons) then we'll have a glut of new GPUs made instead, which will lead to much lower prices for new GPUs as they try to clear out their stocks of new GPUs
