The next version of the DX chip in the D90 is arriving soon in the form of the D300S.

Includes autofocus while recording.

23.6 x 15.8 mm 12 megapixel CMOS sensor with 720p at 24p.

Nothing special there on the surface. But I await the first reports.

Nikon it seems have not yet grasped the possibilities and potential offered by the GH1 style hybrid video / stills cameras.

"The D300S’s advanced D-Movie function benefits from a number of functional and technological advancements, including an external stereo microphone input enabling high-fidelity audio, plus in-camera movie editing. In Tripod mode, the D300S features contrast-detect AF.

Experimenting with Nikon’s selection of finest-quality NIKKOR interchangeable lenses — from ultra-wide-angle and fisheye to super-telephoto – will enhance the dramatic impact of HD video. What’s more, the camera’s versatile Picture Control adjustment options let you modify the tone and colour of HD video clips with remarkable ease."

It seems to be another camera with video tacked on rather than any kind of balanced hybrid.

And a fixed LCD, it seemed. Just taking photos today I felt that I'd never use another camera again that didn't have the GH1 articulated LCD.

I might get this just because of the dual card slots... card errors on Panasonic cameras are scaring the s**t out of me

I have to tell you, Ozpeter, that you and I are on the same boat with that. I've only had my camera for a day, and I find that it's one of the most well thought out digital cameras I've ever handled. The articulated screen is a god send - I've been able to properly compose images that I've never been able to do before.

Plus now I'm totally spoiled with 60fps.

Out next month. I'll grab a D300s to test out the video mode. If it's got manual controls finally, better compression and controlled rolling shutter garbage then it's not a bad option.

Don't get you hopes up, Kholi. ;-) I'm interested to hear about what you find though.

The data rate appears to be the same as the D90 and the processor and sensor the same so don't expect any jello improvements either, and this is coming from a closet nikon fanboy. It's looking like it might be another 6 to 12 months before nikon start to roll out new improved sensors and processors with the D400 and D800, I'm not holding my breath for the D700s

The 60D sounds like a much better option- http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=178940

It has no manual controls, it seems. Only addition is slow-ass contrast detect AF when shooting video, and a mic input.

I'm not sure if it's the most well thought out camera, but I do like the articulated screen. Makes live view very useful.

Well that HD footage on the japanese site just lost me. Looks like maybe a bit of Jello Improvement, but the same compression and stair-stepping.

Oh well.
