New NEX-FS700R and NEX-FS700RH camcorders to be announced soon too.

As for Phase Detection AF, i understand that the current FS7000 couldn't just add it on. They would have to put a new sensor in for the FS700R. But hey, i have the NEX 5R and that has PDAF (the previous version didn't) with E-Mount lenses. I could swear i even updated the firmware on the actual lenses to work with PDAF?

Another nice touch would be to replace the on board monitor with an OLED monitor the same size, or Sony's version of an Apple Retina display for better focusing...

I don't see any reason for Phase Detection AF as it work with Sony LA_EA2_adapter, because it's NOT POSSIBLE to choose focusing point and camera change it all the time and I've got out of focus object any time without ability to control it... this is stupid, and I prefer to manualy focus with Rokinon Cine lenses!!! :)

I have the NEX-6 which has Phase Detect AF on the sensor as well. I decided to run some tests. I made sure my kit SEL18200 lens was upgraded to firmware v2 so that PDAF on the NEX-6 was fully supported.

I set up some low contrast focusing targets in a low light situation.

The FS700 absolutely KILLS the NEX-6 in AF, both in speed and in ability to acquire focus lock. Many times, the NEX-6 just sat there hunting back & forth. The FS700 wasn't fast, but it did side in and lock focus in almost every case.

Which isn't to say that the FS700 is an auto-focus demon... more like NEX stills cameras vomit large chunks when it comes to AF performance... and they don't have to / shouldn't as other mirrorless manufacturers have proven.

Anyway, my point is that PDAF on the sensor might not actually improve the FS700's ability to AF, given that even wthout PDAF, it smokes a camera that already has PDAF on the sensor.

Yes SergeMart even got snarky with me. I never said the camera was an ENG style camera. Have some chamomile tea and chill the "F" out. Every comment you make sounds like some high school kid on youtube. Please back off.

The sony 18-200 power zoom is, for all intents and purposes, identical to the manual zoom with the addition of the zoom servo. After running that lens, I can caution everyone that it's a real power hog. The FS700 on board battery won't last long (about 20 mins) if you're running an external recorder along with things.

The SELP18200 has a smoother manual zoom ring and also looks a lot nicer than the original lens. With my copy, I haven't noticed any significant loss in battery life, even when power zooming frequently. Sony is perhaps one of the best in the world at energy efficient electronics.

I also haven't noticed any noticeable reduction in battery life using the SELP18200. I alternate between that lens and the Metabones Speed Booster with EF Mount.

I'm curious what thew new MSRP will be, would be nice if they pushed it back up since it would easily justify paying for the upgrade if it added value to our used cameras.
As a potential new buyer, I hope for the opposite, naturally ;)
So far the only price I've senn is CVS in Belgium selling it for €5.695 + VAT. CLP in the UK has the old one for €6.248 + VAT. Whether this is a price drop or if CVS were always cheaper, I don't know.
(Both prices for the camera only, no lens)
