new NEX-EA50 and 18-200 power-zoom

Good review! I'm concerned about the moire and aliasing, but Alister says it's not too bad. I saw some video from a VG30 and it had lots of moire.

I wonder if this could replace my FS100? I like the form factor of the EA50. There's nothing worse than trying to shoot with the FS100 when it's perched on a fully raised tripod. I'm too short to see the viewfinder.

Too bad the EA50 doesn't have the same sensor as the FS100. Still though, for the price including the new powered zoom lens, I am liking the EA50.

At first I was ah yah, then i saw that there's no ND filters, so i was like whaa? W...T....F.... Sony?

I use the Z7s on a daily basis, and would be SCREWED if it wasn't for the ND filter wheel. Pretty much makes this camera a paper weight in my mind for ENG shooting.

yep. lack of ND is a deal breaker for me.

Hopefully this will be resolved in their update for this camera, because it looks near perfect for my needs.

I really doubt the design is going to get changed.
There isn't a lot of room for them to put ND filters in.
And it's a verifiable fact they put a mechanical shutter in there for stills shooting.

You might be right. I found what I'd need from Cavision. Although I LOVE having internal ND, I'll be able to make it work with external ND and a mattebox

Are variable NDs not sufficient enough? Aren't a lot of FS100s with the kit lens using a lens mount ND solution?
I guess you mean mount adapters that have ND built inside?
Do those really exist?
Can someone point a link to one of these?

In this era of mirrorless dslr's, what is the benefit of having mechanical shutter without optical viewfinder?

EDIT: I think I googled it right. Mechanical shutter for avoiding rolling shutter artifacts in still photography. Too bad that they still can't fit both mechanical shutter and ND behind the E-mount.
Well, maybe next year... (Seriously, it seems that as DSMC paradigm comes to mainstream, E-mount was a misstep. One mount used in all still and video cameras would had much more beneficial for manufacturer and customer.)

No, he meant screw-on ND filters that screw on to the front of the lens.
I too, think variable NDs are sufficient. I don't really think the lack of built-in NDs is a deal-breaker.

sure would be great to have some side by side comparisions of this and the vg30 and the vg900....

the vg900 interests me most, seeing as i can slap my 28mm 1.8 on there, which with the lossless 2x zoom becomes a 28-56mm FOV equivalant F1.8 constant... that to me is just brilliant for event work

I think the lack is PITA in doco/eng work.
So this means that built in nd costs $4k now... (EA50 vs. FS700).
Maybe they just want to protect a market segment, but I'd like to hear what good mechanical shutter does these days?

I've understood that even good variable nd's have vignetting and they add big amount to camera's overall price in this price point.
And how much does variable ND take light away at minimum? One stop?
Btw, do they also act as pola filter (always on)?

Well, yes.
The thin ones won't vignette unless you go crazy wide (below 24mm ff equiv)
I'm not sure about the pola, but the kenko claims to have an de-polarization plate...whatever that means...not too sure :)

Btw, do EA50 & VG900 have the same zoom, this new 18-200?

I've only seen the VG900 for sale as a body only. Have you see it for sale with a kit lens?
But the VG900 will take any E-mount and A-mount lens. Since the VG900 also has a zoom toggle switch, I'm sure the 18-200 zoom will work just fine.

My mistake, just saw NEX-VG30H in the same news article in dpreview...

Pretty strange that this new Sony E-mount 18-200mm 3.5-6.3 OSS lens seems not to be available by itself... you'll have to buy a camera to get it?

I remember reading that it will be available separately for other cams (FS 700, etc.) for around $800 or 900 (I forget exactly). But seeing as how the availability date on the EA50 that comes with the lens was just pushed back (according to B&H) from October 15th to December 30, 2012 it looks like they may be still working out the kinks that have been reported in some preliminary reviews (focus and image shifting, etc.)

Pretty sad this price gap between two existing zoom lens that suits all kind of use.
SCL-Z18X140 is $10k and works only with F3 and this new one is less than $1k.
Nothing in between...
I'd pay happily double or triple of this <$1k if the lens would be a bit longer and faster...
