new NEX-EA50 and 18-200 power-zoom

Some nice features and a pretty damn cheap price... Could be a winner for some creative ENG.... no NDs though, seems an oversight, the camera has the real estate to fit them in.

Here is a promotional video for this new camcorder. It includes footage shot with the camcorder using a wide variety of Sony E and Alpha mount lenses:

Looks like a great step up from the VG-20.

I love my VG-20 - it's a wildly unappreciated camera... That said, getting a few more buttons, control over sharpening/contrast (at least I assume it will have them), and 2 XLR inputs sure as heck isn't worth $3,000.

This new camera has the same sensor, same lack of built-in ND, same frame rates, same glass as the stock zoom lens. Oddly, it doesn't even have the VG20's dedicated eye piece view finder (rather using the same clunky FS100 method).

Looks quite a bit like the JVC GYU 100/et al line-up - which is good. I used to own one, and it def had a "wow" factor when you showed up with it. But again, hardly worth the huge up tick in price.

A side step at best, as I'm not sure why ENG gathers wouldn't use either Canon or other Sony cameras that have 50mbs/4:2:2 colour space - I'm guessing it's more of a form factor test run for the next gen of the FS100/700.

I disagree. This cam has XLR's and it's actually nicely usable with a powered zoom. VG-20 has nothing over the Sony nex-5n. It's actually worse.

We have been using the Canon XF100 but this one looks to beat it seriously. The XF100 is really bad at lowlight and the 50mbps 4:2:2 doesn't really look that much better. I also dislike the 1/3" look. Thinking about selling it and going for this.

While one can say that about the sensors of these two cameras, the NEX-5N has some serious issues from a practical standpoint that I found extremely troubling. The ergonomics of the camera are simply awful, in my opinion. I found the controls and the menu system to be highly awkward to use. And mine experienced overheating problems with any significant amount of use.

Hopefully the soon to be announced NEX-F5 and NEX-6 will both address these issues and be more practical for shooting video.

...any word on availability of the lens alone ? i.e will it be compatible with other nex cameras ?

I am sure that Sony will tell everybody in 2 years when they come with the second version with internal ND, how much they listen to us. For a little $ 4000 more. Always the same with those manufacturers, always forget one thing or another. In this case a vital feature for a camera that is definitely for eng run and gun style. I would like to see how many people will be able to fit some ND with the zoom lens unless they use a big matte box and rail system.

I like the way the body is designed, kind of wish they went this route with the FS100. I'm assuming the sensor here isn't as nice as the FS100 sensor.

It's the exact same sensor as in the VG20 and 5n (which is different then the FS100).

I wonder if this means the FS100 line will be fazed out, and the NEX-EA50 and the FS700 will be Sony's two primary large sensor HD cams in this price range. My reasoning being that the EA50 is pretty close to the FS100 price point, and the FS700 can then be the big kahuna to the EA50. This kind of makes sense in that it would get some to pony up the extra money for the FS700 cause of the sensor and future 4K add-ons. The fact that the EA50 doesn't have the great FS100 sensor makes it less competitive against the FS700. Weren't a lot of people saying they don't need to upgrade from the FS100 to an FS700 due to the FS100 doing just about all they'd need, plus the great low-light capabilities already inherent in the FS100 sensor? I mean, unless you really need the slo-mo and 4K capabilities of the FS700, I can see the FS100 still being a great bang for the buck.

It kind of makes me wonder if buying a used FS100 might not be a bad idea in the near future. That is unless the EA50 is comparable in low-light and general picture quality.
