new NEX-EA50 and 18-200 power-zoom

I have had an NEX5n for two weeks - not properly tested yet - just shot some stuff
My feel is the low light is far worse than the FS100, some worse than the 5d, and similar to the 7d (which I got shot of ages ago)
That makes total sense in terms of Pixel size

I can see some moiree, but not of the scale of canon DSLRs 7d/5d2

Nex5n 800 ISO I think with 18-55 kit lens, 5.6 max at long end indoor no lighting

7d, you say? So i would assume the EA50 would be some where between the 7d and 5d, if what sony says is true. That's very adequate in my opinion. If i need to push the gain really high then I'll pay Neat a little visit, i guess.

How much sharper is it than say, a 5dmk2? That's my main concern. If its not noticeably sharper I'll probably get the 5dmk3 instead of this when i upgrade. The canons have also been disappointing when it came to sharpness, that's why i was attracted to the ea50 in the first place. I can forgive the poorer low light, but sharpness is critical, for me.

I have both the nex 5n, 5d mark III and also the 7d.

Out of all these I'd much rather shoot with the 5d, then the 7d and last the 5n.

5n image quality surpasses the 7d in certain ways but doesn't come close to the 5d. Sharpness is pretty much the same or maybe a slight edge to the 5n, though the 5n has aliasing. A bit less than the 7d but it's still there. 5d is very clean compared.

Isn't the mk3 identical to the 7d in terms of sharpness? Only moire/aliasing/lowlight is improved with the mk3, as far as i know.
if the mk3 footage is sharper/nicer than the ea50 I'll probably take it over the sony. But of course we'll need to wait for the reviews first.

I think the nex5n is softer - but less sharpening artifacts - trade off I guess, also settings make a difference - I did not delve there.

sharpness difference is quite negligible in my opinion. I'm disappointed. I had expected the nex5n to completely beat the 5d here...

I dont know why. They both rely on the 'technology' of throwing away 75% of the data the sensor records

S

I guess that's stills cameras for you. I just hope the ea50 is significantly sharper... according to sony it will have a video-optimized low-pass filter and an improved sensor (?)
Come on sony...don't disappoint us.

The 50 is a still camera.

BTW revisit my blog, I may have had some codec issues which would relfect well on the Nex5n (thanks to Twitter . Im on it)

Sorted. Now the5d looks a pile of crap!..

Wow that's quite a difference! heh.
Hope restored in the ea50...even if its only slightly improved I'll still take it over the 5DMk3. :)

ps: *wait hold on, i just downloaded the pictures, the fs100 and nex5n files appear to be the same...is this an error?

It is just me or the promo video from Sony on NEX-EA50 seems way too soft. Anybody else seen the same thing?

I doubt that's the full rez file you're seeing in the edit. Sony rarely uploads true, full rez images in the promo films..they're too busy making them look as if they were made in the 70's. ;)

All joking aside, the image quality will likely be comparable or slightly improved over the NEX5n, so find some raw NEX5n files to get a sense of what the image will look like. Take them with a pinch of salt, though, as it will likely be slightly different due to the more video-oriented OLPF and processing.

On a side note, price on B&h has dropped from 4500 to 4200. So its officially cheaper than the 5Dmk3 (With 24-105 lens). Sony really is trying to take on canon here.

If I was looking for a new camera for event shooting, I would get this one over C100. Does anyone know if it has clean HDMI out? Is it 4:2:2 or 4:2:0?

The sony rep Dan Chung interviewed was unsure about it, but he 'guessed' that its was 4:2:0. I say guess as from his tone and uneasiness, you can tell he wasn't sure or wasn't comfortable with the answer...so...not sure. But his answer was 4:2:0.

I really don't see what C100 has to offer that this one doesn't. And if Sony can improve its HDMI output to 8bit 4:2:2, this camera will be the choice for a lot of event shooters.

As far as i can work out, C100 has ND filters and a better sensor (same as c300). Which means it'll be sharper and perhaps alias less. But come on, who can really tell 800 lines and 1000lines apart once you edit/colour grade/process/downscale in the final video. So i would say if you already have alot of canon lenses, get the c100. If you don't, it just simply comes down to budget. No doubt the c100 will be a better camera, but is it worth the extra 3,000? that's your call.

for 3k, I could get a mattebox and some really nice 4x4 NDs and if the ea50 does have clean 4:2:2 out, maybe even a ninja and have a very equal camera with a much better form factor. You have to admit, the EA50's form factor is to die for and easily the best out of all the large chippers.

As a ENG shooter for a website, I think this camera is pretty perfect for me. Was looking at a Canon XF100 but this seems like a better solution for us. Looking forward to seeing how far that price can fall!

Well, the price has dropped from US4500 to US4200...and that's before the official release. It may stagnate here (As in the case of the 5D3) or it may drop further when the camera starts shipping (as in the case of the C300). We can probably expect a final price of between 3500-4200 US. I hope it falls to 3k+ though...at 4000+, the 5D3 is really enticing as it also takes great stills...if it can fall into the 3000+ range, I would take it over the 5D3 without hesitation.
