new NEX-EA50 and 18-200 power-zoom

At first I was ah yah, then i saw that there's no ND filters, so i was like whaa? W...T....F.... Sony?

I use the Z7s on a daily basis, and would be SCREWED if it wasn't for the ND filter wheel. Pretty much makes this camera a paper weight in my mind for ENG shooting.

Close the iris? It will still look better than the Z7.

If this camera had a stop or two of negative gain that could alleviate the need for internal ND filters.

Are variable NDs not sufficient enough? Aren't a lot of FS100s with the kit lens using a lens mount ND solution?

At 28s, this promo video seems to indicate the lens only works with this camera.

It's an E-mount. It will attach to all E-mount cameras. And the lens has its own power zoom controls. Why wouldn't it work on any E-mount camera?
All the write-ups on the camera say the lens will work on all E-mount cameras.
The lens may have been designed exclusively for this camera, but that doesn't mean it won't mount up to existing E-mount cameras.

As far as the power zoom working with controls from the camera, only the EA-50 and FS700 have zoom controls. I would hope the 700 can use this lens.

Edit - See Diegocervo's embedded video posted above. it shows the lens working on an NEX-5N.

This new camera seems targeted at the WEVA crowd. 1080p video with full rez stills including raw. I could see this becoming a favorite for shooting Weddings.

As a Wedding Videographer, this camera is VERY interesting to me...however, I have 3 issues:

1) No ND (surprise, surprise) Weddings are indoor/outdoor and fast so why no ND?!
2) No HD-SDI out. I get that it has HDMI, but on the run, HDMI seems much less stable on locking down. This hurts.
3) I'm new to the detachable lens world...but NEED a power zoom so this is nice...BUT...isn't a lens that's f/3.5-6.3 going to be really dark when using it in the dark (which is every Reception)? Or are these sensors so good that you can bump the gain to compensate and it will still look cleaner than other cams?

If it had ND and HD-SDI I'd be a shoe in as Weddings are all I do and these two specs are important to me. Bummer.

Finally...I wonder how these cams compare in low-light using the power zoom to the EX1/EX1R/EX3 and the new PMW-200's???

Curious.

1. No ND is a hassle, one of the best things about the FS-700 compared to the FS-100. Okay if you are not in a hurry, not ideal for weddings.
3. That lens is only good for outdoors, even with the FS-100. Hardly marginal even with the clean FS100 gain in a lighted room, wouldn't consider it for a reception. And This camera is not likely to be as good in low light as the FS-100.

If there ever was a camera that you need to wait for VERSION 2, this is the one.

Well, I'm not exactly sure how they measure it, But I've heard that even at 6.3, its still about 2 stops better than the EX1 at 2.8. Not sure if its exactly that, but it seems plausible. Which means that since the EX1 goes down to 1.9, it'll be about 1 stop better. And Let's not forget that if you don't zoom in fully, you can keep it at around f/3.5 or a 4, which will make it about 2+ stops better than the ex1 at 1.9. As the pmw2000 seems to use the same chips and differ little in terms of low light, the difference should be about there too.

Hmmm...

Decisions, decisions.

Reading the post before yours it said "wouldn't consider it (the EA50) for a reception" and then you said, it may be around 2+ stops better than an EX1 (which generally gets great low-light reviews) if I don't zoom all the way in of course. So I got both views and now I'm back to square one. But this is all interesting stuff as I learn about lenses, etc. so thank you for your input. I'm so used to just running in there with my 2 HMC150's and a couple nice LEDs and making it work that an Panny AC160A or a Sony PMW-200 seemed like the logical upgrade for my style...but now this! It'll be interesting to see which camera truly works best for "events" as this camera so graciously labeled itself an "event" cam.

I've always been a Panasonic guy but my biz has taken off and it's time for the next best thing. I don't like HDSLR's so 6-12 months from now I'm gonna fork over whatever it takes and get me 2 new good cams for my business. I love Panasonic...but now my brother works for Sony so I get a nice little "discount" :)

Decisions, decisions.

ex1 at 1.9.

The EX1 is not actually 1.9 at the long end - im pretty sure it goes to 2.8

The Fs100 and kit lens is less noisy and has less DOF than an EX1 (I have both)

The new camera will be more noisy than the FS100

As for ND this camera probably has base 100 ISO, Id rate the FS100 at 800

So you 'get 3 stops of nd for free' with the new cam compared to the FS100

.. still not ideal

Well, i've read about the reports of the 1.9 not really being 1.9 issue with the EX1.
Does anyone know how the NEX5n compares to perhaps the canon DSLRs in low light? It will be a rough gauge for the ea50's performance.
But unlike most, I'm not too bothered with the lack of ND. a mattebox or screw on NDs easily fix the problem.

I have had an NEX5n for two weeks - not properly tested yet - just shot some stuff
My feel is the low light is far worse than the FS100, some worse than the 5d, and similar to the 7d (which I got shot of ages ago)
That makes total sense in terms of Pixel size

I can see some moiree, but not of the scale of canon DSLRs 7d/5d2

Nex5n 800 ISO I think with 18-55 kit lens, 5.6 max at long end indoor no lighting
