New music video shot with Hvx200

something very subtle about the lyrics and overall tone here... kind of painting a tender.. tapestry of love and comitment... NOT. Besides, that's some terrible ass shaking. I'm no ginger rogers here.. but painful white people dancing makes even me cringe. Maybe it's that I've been married to a black women for 10 years.. and I've been introduced into another world of dancing and culture. Believe me... I am the life of the party as the white boy who don't know how to dance.. dont' care.. just looking to make the sisters smile as I look all friggin retarded.

Fun stuff there Danillo. Are you the mastermind behind all that ass? I personally have a soft spot for ass videos. I'd like to make up a sign and hang out on the street.

I've been meaning to get to Italy. I'm going back to the UK and Amsterdamn this summer. Maybe a trip to ITaly to see some fine Italian Asses would be good. Donkeys are great.. and I'm sure I'd see some lovely women as well.


What time is the best to make it to Italy? Sicily would be cool to make it.. and shoot, why not just jump on over to Ibiza and Greece.... Leave my life behind and tour the world on a tramp steamer... shooting booty videos and mayonaise commericals. YIPPEE

I liked the look of this video a lot - in particular, the shots of the people seated in the red chairs. It was all very professional.

The closeups of the performers were kind of strange though. For some reason they made me uncomfortable, especially the ones with that weird guy.

If you love hot seasons come here in july or august, I live in Naples, it's a good place to look monuments, sea (The Toxic Avenger really loves it!), and nice gals!

I thought all of the shots looked great, but I'm just highly annoyed by incredibly dorky performers (especially the guy singing falsetto) taking themselves so seriously.

And hey, how stupid can we make the lyrics? Wait, I've got an idea...

We shot it using two HVXs, one with the Letus 35mm adapter. The lenses used on the adapter were 50mm, 85mm, and 105mm Nikon primes. CJ in particular had some issues with the Letus; I have since ordered a Micro 35 and am eagerly awaiting its arrival. You can see in some of the photos that the monitors had to be turned upside down for those shots as a result of using the adapter.

Lighting was actually pretty basic - mostly source fours on the front-lit directional b-roll scenes (the scenes of people making out) and a few 1Ks for the wider stuff. A 4x bank of Kinos was also suspended from the ceiling for the shot of the four band members on the couch.

Really professional. The vid is well paced, and I like the mood created by the lighting. A standout was the last shots on stage and the depth of field created by the DP and designer on the couch shots (the singer's dress didn't miss the mark either ;) )

The only critique I could come up with was it was kind of repetitive. But obviously budget is a consideration.

Edit : Just saw the photos...what is that location, a bar ? Why no slow-mo making out on the pool table ?
Also, who came up with the concept and visualization ? I'm always to curious as to that dynamic.

Tell CJ I appreciated his contribution here. He was one of the few professionals who's stuff I clicked on just due to his name being attached.

It was shot in a club in San Francisco called the Cafe DuNord. Really cool looking place even before any production design. The stage (with it's "bug zapper" as it affectionately came to be known) was the biggest part of the video that was "manufactured" by the crew. The lush velvet surfaces and the beautiful red curtains were already a part of the venue.

I believe that the director, Samuel V Yem, came up with the concept jointly with the band. I wasn't a part of the preproduction so I don't have a lot of details regarding the origins of the video. In my opinion, this song sounds nothing like any of their other music so I was surprised that they chose it for the first video after hearing the rest of their CD. They were amazing people, however - very patient during the 14+ hour shoot, and gave everything they had on each take.

It's very nice to hear everyone's kind comments; although CJ doesn't post here anymore I will make sure that he hears them as well.
 
Haakon... The bug zapper stuff.. with them performing at the end of the video... Looks unbelievable. I think it's the best stuff I've seen with this camera so far....

We all know that there's problems in dark areas and murky areas.. but this camera LOVES highlights and blown out stuff.. well actually, it still retains it's details doesn't it.


please convey that that stuff looks wonderful. I can't wait to do one myself.

I definitely agree with you that the HVX handles highlights extremely well. The color is also fantastic; very akin to the curves that the DVX produces. In those two areas (which are certainly important), the camera shines. I've also been a huge proponent of P2 since the concept was announced; the workflow is spectacular and I don't have any desire to ever shoot on tape again. There are a handful of things to like about the camera.

I am not going to beat the dead horse that is the artifacting/noise issue any longer, suffice to say that my opinions on the problem remain unchanged and I find the camera to be unusable in a majority of shooting situations. CJ Roy, the other operator (and editor) on this video agrees with me completely and posted his similar thoughts in the link I referenced above. I do think the video looks great after being downrezzed to SD and the blacks completely crushed, and the clients are estatic with their DVD copy. However, as an HD source (which is why many of us bought the camera in the first place), the footage just doesn't hold up. That is the reason that an HD version of the video has not and will not be released at any time (this is not my decision, but that of the director, producer, and CJ). I know other people feel differently about the camera and I am not trying to discredit anyone's opinions. For professional application, however, I think better tools are required. $6,000 is a lot to pay for a 1/3" camera just to get SD material these days - variable framerates or not.
