I like the look it's very surreal. You had a vision. went for it. achieved it. congrats! The video makes you feel like your dreaming. I really would like to see thos instructions for the homeade mini35 will it be possible on the DVX?
yes, three members of our team were part of the team who made Marla. Our new mini35 still doesn't flip the picture, the picture is flipped vertically and horizontally. We frame using a small LCD that flips the picture horizontally mounted upside down.
most of this video clip is in slow-mo so we did shoot in 50i and went to 50p (2x slow-mo) using twixtor pro in After Effects. We didn't use cineframe, we're pretty sure we can get something better by desinterlacing in post, at least you have more control. We did shoot some stuff at a shutter of 1/25 because we didn't have enough light. At this shutter the picture is actually progressive.
The sharpness was at about 7, we did shift the color-balance on the cold side for the interiors and to the warm side for the exterior shot on the roof. Because of the nature of this clip (quite warm conventional look, by this, we mean it's not aphex twin...), we didn't shift the color balance that much (like we did in Marla. for example).
It has nothing to do with this video, but the in-camera b/w (color sat down to the maximum) of the sony using the mini35 looks gorgeous, we may try some tests using it to see if it's cleaner than making it in post.
Guys, great work. Thanks for sharing this and the detailed information. I would love to see more work from others with some information on the setup and some grabs.
