New music video: negative criticism only please!

1:14, the quick shot of the woman slapping the man (left to right) makes the slap less dramatic. It is the first moment she shows her distaste in him and it's ruined by a stylized cut.

In some of his close ups, the shot is out of focus for a brief moment. It's my personal opinion, but you have a sharp video throughout, and then some of the shots are out of focus all of a sudden.

The series of shots of him in each location singing to camera near the end are all close ups. It makes the transition a little repetitive, even though he's eeking out emotion (very theatrically in some places, haha) and I would rather see a variety of angles during this time, even though they are different locations.

Those are my personal notes. Other than that, great job! Crew and talent did well.

I would love to know if you only used the AF100 or did you cut it with another camera? IF it was just the Af.. I would also love to know your scene files..

Jimmy I totally agree with you on that edit wish we had time to plan that shot out better. Same thing with the singing coverage I would have liked to have more shot sizes. Thanks for the input!

GrandLunar it was all AF100

My favorite shot was the slow mo tracking shot around the guy on the roof playing guitar. My least favorite shot was the bright close up wearing a white jacket especially the shot with the back of his throat lit up, thats not flattering to the talent. When I saw that first shot I thought the video might be arcing from warm to cold and that all the shots would go to a colder tone, but it switched back and forth to warm shots again which just made them stick out.

I liked the way you used the glass wall to separate them and she looked sad which translated the emotional tone of the song well. I liked how you composed your close ups but there was too many of them. When the camera went wide it was refreshing . The emotion of the song was more about separation and isolation so the camera should represent that maybe with wider shots tracking away, or shooting through semi opaque materials like glass or something so show that separation.

Try this experiment. Play the video with sound off for someone who hasn't heard the song. Ask them what they think the story is about. You dont have to be "on the nose" with what you show on screen but you be surprised how subtle use of composition and camera movement can really create that same emotion that the song is putting across.

Did not like the song, man!

Ha ha.

Negative comments? Some of those shots at the bar, close up of girl, looked too lit.

I really liked that slo-mo pan on the rooftop, though. And then kiss over the sun was cool.

Yeah I don't know about looking down that dude's throat. I know it's interesting from a scientific standpoint. But it's kind of weird.

Maybe get further away from him or something. I don't know. Music videos are tough because if you don't like the song/singer, your opinion is tainted.

Nice silhouettes and sweet purple lighting on that sunset.

Maybe less movement?

Nice detail on water's surface.

Cool idea for the negative.

Yea I think it would have been better if he was sitting up for the closeup throat shots. It's funny you say the closeup of the girl looked too lit b/c we didn't light that shot.
