hey all..

I ahve posted some of the stuff the studio I work with has done before but thought you might like this.

This is our seconf video with this artists and her thrid total (we did her first, she went to someone else for the second and came running back to us for the third LOL Very sweet girl though, her managment chose the 'other" who was some friend)

This track features Pitbull. If you don't know who he is... you will. MTV has been covering him alot, did a track with Little John and he is coming up quick. We actually only had him for an hour so all hist stuff was greenscreened.

Here is the link, the video is "Kamasutra" in English and Spanish

As to the details..
DVX100A, P+S Telecine adapter, 35mm prime lenses, cut in Final Cut Pro HD, Color Correction on Final Touch HD, Compositing in Shake, and some creative use of the Grain Damage plug in to make pretty ladies look even better. Thoughts are welcome, enjoy.

"This Video is only for yahoo customers from the US"
Guess us old Europe farts won't get to see it...
Do you have an other link?

Holy crap; awesome work. Pimp that DVX proudly; this should be one of the spokesvideos for the DVX100 (any camera actually)

Bravo.

Green screen held up quite nicely, wasn't onscreen too long so that it was an eyesore, nice. Colors looked great, very a-typical rap video. Nice work man.

Only thing I didn't like was the lighting when she was around the netted rope, but everything else was Grade A awesome!

Hey thanks all. Yeah Yahoo is screwy. They don't like netscape for some reason, not sure what is up with that. Now that it is getting some exposure though I will see if we can't get it up on our website in quicktime for more to view.

Didn't like the lighting at the ropes? Really? I actually really liked that lighting LOL I guess it is just because I am so used to to doing the same thing and that was different.

It does look very "A" typical hip hop vid, which when you consider most are on 35mm and this is DVX it is still an ubber compliment. We do alot of Reggaetone music videos and I have been editing several of those, the hardest part is they all want the same thing. Same jump cuts on the same drum beats ect. No one is trying to be original, they all want to be just like everybody else. That is really why I love rock videos so much, those kids grow up watching some really cool vids and most want their video to look different. I have some stuff in the works now that hopefully will accomplish that. Keep your eyes peeled and I will see if I can get another version of the Adassa vid up.

Excellent!
Can you tell us about the lightning process? What kind of light did you use? How many?
Also, who is doing Grain Damage? I've never heard of it.

Well alot of different lights used there. We own 12 Kinoflows 6 daylight, 6 tungstein. We do alot with those. We also attach two, 2' Kinos to the matte box so on dollie moves in makes a nice front fill and shows well in eyes and sunglasses.

As to grain Damage we had never heard of it eithere. Another production company said, "We dont know what this is, you want it?" We took it, put it in the computer and started playing with it. It is supposed to reduce or add grain as you like to images, but it also creates an effect much like smart blur in photoshop. It selects skin tones and smoothes them out, makes womens skin look like porcelian. Things like eyes, eye lashes and hair still have hard edges that pop though. It is this cheesy little program that when used right, especially on videos, has some killer results.

wow. Tizzy...very wow. Trully inspiring what people are doing with Digital...just crazy!

Question: Granted pretty much all of the talent has darker skin tones did you find it more beneficial to your shots to use tungsten or daylight...or even a combination? I read somewhere DP Johnny Ching said he likes Tungsten on dark tones...what's your take?

Well Lenny and Alejandro usually joint DP, most of our artists are latino or black and we generally use Daylight Kinos on them but quite often offset that with a tungsten. The Daylight blue tends to be our primary, seems more flexible in post for CC as well. As I emntioned Lenny color corrects on Final Touch HD. Incredible program. hew used to do CC on Davincis and this gives him the closest thing to that flexibility he has seens since. Understand we have magic bullet but he does not use it (I still do, but learning final touch) The program is amazing, we are in the middle of a music video/movie for this hip hop artists DVD that has a terminator theme. We have one of the original "Americas next top model" girls in it. She has stark blue eyes, but when we pulled down the colors they went with it. It allows you with a great deal of ease to pull them back up, almost to the point of glowing and do some simple tracking. Really impressive.

Thanks all for the kind words. It is nice to hear when this is what you do for a living. Between all of us there we have almost 200 music videos so we are getting there. Just wait till we get the andromeda taps for the DVX Oh mama the things we will do...

Real good stuff there tizzy.
There is something about dark skin tones that look real good on the dvx. I guess you dont have to deal with the pinkish video look.

One question, what do you guys do to keep your color correction safe for MTV, especially MTV espanol, got a video playing on there, and it came out way too contrasty, even tho the dvd we made looks perfect on all televisions we played it on, when they transfered it to broadcast it came out way too dark... Whats your take on the safe way to go about it.

Hmmm.. well we have always given MTV/MTV espanol ect a digi Beta copy so it sounds to me like they did some sort of transfer in house and screwed it up for ya. That way we can monitor it all the way through, and deliver it exactly as we see it. We have our Digi Beta decks hooked right into our system so we just send an output signal directly to them so it is clean. Truth is I have never liked our Quicktime compression. All or videos colors look so washed out. As I am there more I will play with the compressors and try and correct that.

That was really good. the editing and flow fit the music. How did you get that vignetting? I really liked the little touches, like the letterbox segment in the middle that was b&w with the redline at the edge. That was different - simple but cool.

Wow thank you all so very much. We sometimes get so into what we are doing that it just becomes repetitious in feel. When I work there I sleep there so it is 24/7 for me, we almost become zombies after a while so it is always rewarding to hear others comment. Lenny never ceases to impress me. He has a great eye and he has been doing this a long time. He offers alot to learn from ESPECIALLY on the business end which is the most difficult and challenging aspect of what we do.

As to the vignetting that is all done with plug ins. Magic Bullet has some as does G-Film (which is what we generally use for those) you can cotroll the opacity, density, spread ect. It is subtle, but can add a nice little something to the end product. I myself have been really digging the Knowell Light plug in, tracking light streaks from car headlights and adding a little extra "bling" to jewelery in videos as well. There is some cool stuff out there, especially for Final Cut HD.
