FS7: New mic holder

So my Sony mic mount finally broke, and i will need to find another.

What are the options you guys are using, and why did you pick it?

Im especially looking for a small and compact mount that is backpack friendly. I like to put my fully rigged FS7 into my F-stop Shinn backpack, ready to shoot at a moments notice high in the mountains.

Check out Rode, they have some nice supports that can attach to the hot shoe.

As you mentioned the backpack transport situation Martin, I imagine you're not keen to attach anything to the FS7's native hotshoe / MI interface, as it will increase the height significantly. I'd also have concerns using that attachment point on a day-to-day basis, because the circuitry it contains looks pretty vulnerable.

I would encourage you to consider the Shape top plate, with a small coldshoe adaptor screwed into one of the 1/4-20" holes. As well as protecting your MI interface from any damage, it has the benefit of 'streamlining' the mic, such that it sits at the level of the top-handle, rather than way above it.

You can see my setup using these parts here: #418

You'll also notice the Shape T/P is useful for attaching lots of other potential accessories too!

Cheers,

jason

I vote for Jason's suggestions too. An I never leave the mic mounted when I put the camera into a bag. It's just one turn of the hand but it will save the mic and the holder for your production.

my smallrig set up (actually I went back for the original viefinder)

Yup I have this hotshoe I use for a mic mount when needed

and these ones at the back for wireless receivers

This way everything comes apart quickly and can go in a Peli 1510 as carry on.

Also check out Rycote, who make several different mounts using their InVision Lyres. I have a few Lyre mounts (boom poles and one on a camera) and like them a lot.
+1 on the Lyre mounts. Nothing beats them for durability, compactness and isolation. I jam mine in my bag all the time and just won't break because it's flexible.

Some good tips here.

Any thoughts about a more compact mount similar to the Sony stock mounts?

I already have the Shape top plate and if i could mount a compact mic mount to that, it would be amazing. Just throw it in the backpack and go!

A replacement Canon c300 mic mount + small rig top plate is the cheapest solution according to a mate of mine.

You could attach the Lyre mount sideways on the edge of the Shape top plate. You'd just have to drill some holes on the side. You might have to tap the holes, but the screws might also work without tapping. You can just get the Lyre upgrade set which is very affordable.
