HDSLR: New MFT camera to be announced on June 5, 2024??

My ship has already sailed but the specs look nice. 32bit float audio is a great addition.
I've been wondering when the camera companies would stop dragging their feet and add 32 bit audio since all the digital recorders have move to it. It's ironic that Panasonic would be the first to offer it but they seem to trying to offer more to increase or maintain their small market share.

The micro 4/3 put them in a disadvantage since it was not a sensor size that anyone else were using. I get the feeling when it came to low light performance they reached a limit that can't be improved.

So would anyone here buy the GH7 if it added phase detect AF or has everyone moved on? For myself I'm not in the market for a camera and have already moved to Sony.
my Gh4.. had bad viewfinder. errors with mic/headphone delay and a terrible evf. It also ran on windows XP so every click was three hours after you moved the button.

I now have a mirrorless canon. you have a mirrorless sony.

I also have a zcam which is a good 'box cam'

Who would want a panicsonic??

I am highly interested, but can't make a case for it at the moment. I have a GH6 in perfect condition (despite a bird crapping on it during one outing) and my wife has a nearly new G9M2. And I have a well-worn but still working GH5 as a backup. But if today's announcement is a GH7, and if it has some really cool capabilities, I might possibly be interested a few months down the road -- or perhaps a year from now.

Ouch! Don't they have any respect? :) I owned a GH5 for a pretty long time and looking back at some footage, I much prefer the color accuracy of my Sony A7sIII. Both were shot using 10bit LOG. I would think the GH7 would be on par with the current Canikony models and a great tool for $2,200. But then again, that is not far away from a Sony A7IV. The high-mid market is a rough one!

I have a GH6, AF is not that important to me as I shoot everything manual anyway. The thing that would encourage me to update is if it had dual CFexpress slots and RAW video recording. Preferably BRAW.

I watched the announcement and have to admit that I'm not lining up to buy the new GH7. The new features include internal RAW video recording, phase detect auto focus, a new audio adapter (XLR-2) that supports 32-bit floating recording, two CFexpress slots, and a license to add an ARRI log video format that matches the ARRI Alexa. (It's not clear to me from the presentation whether or not GH7 buyers get the ARRI log feature with the GH7 or if it is a $200 option. It was clear that the ARRI log feature is also available for the GH6 as a $200 option.) The photo features of the GH7 were said to be similar to the G9M2 (which is a nice photography camera) but the big difference between the GH6 and the G9M2 photographically is phase detect auto focus in the G9M2. I have both a GH6 and a G9M2, and they are pretty similar photographically: 25.2mp sensor; 100mp handheld shooting mode.

One of the touted features of the new GH7 is its ruggedness, but I don't buy a camera to be rough with it. It's great if it can withstand some knocks, however.

Anyway, it sounds like the new camera could be called the GH6 Mark II, because it is quite similar to the GH6. That's what I got out of the presentation, anyway.

I do not recall if a release date was given for the new camera. The list price is $2,200.

Phase detect AF, 32 bit float audio, internal RAW are all pretty decent upgrades. .Internal ND would have been a killer feature

Am intrigued with the Arri log, think it's a paid upgrade

I just watched Undone review. He summed it up nicely it's a great camera and the upgrades mostly effect solo non cinema shooters. If you shoot manual focus with the GH6 then it's not worth upgrading. I might be tempted to use as a wide camera to pair with my Panasonic camcorders but not really necessary. I'm still happy Panasonic made a good camera because that pushes the other brands to do better. Because when a camera like A7s3 is that much better than the competition Sony was able to sit back for 4 years waiting for everyone to catch up. Maybe 5 years is when they might think of releasing an improved model.
So the improvements (off the top of my head)
1. PD AF
2. XLR hotshoe module with 32 bit recording (does it come with the camera and notably if you don't use it no 32 bit with the mini jack)
3. fixed dynamic range and banding issues
4. higher frame rate without crop (is this new feature?)
5. improved stabilization
6. decreased hdmi lag
7. they have a dummy battery that usb c powered that will allow you to record to an external drive to the usb port. I would opt to record to the cfx slot instead of having to deal with a dummy battery and external drive.

Looks like I misunderstood Panasonic's presentation regarding CFexpress recording on the GH7. I thought the GH7 had two CFexpress slots and no SD slot. However, an article on B&H Photo's site says there is an SD slot and shows a photo of a memory card layout for the GH7 that is the same as the GH6. In other words, one CFexpress slot, one SD slot.

FWIW, I have only used the CFexpress slot once on my GH6 for a video shoot, and that was just to confirm it worked properly. Otherwise, I record exclusively on the SD card.

Yes one of each. As I understand it's only needed for recording internal ProRes raw. Which is a nice feature. I don't film in raw either...

I think one of the more impressive/surprising things is that there is official certification by ARRI for the LogC3 in the GH7!

If anything can cause an explosion in seeing Panasonic mirrorless on film sets I work on, it would be THIS!

Would instantly make the GH7 the #1 choice for crash cam / B Cam / etc, anything that needs very awkward mounting, such as mounting a camera for a shower scene or riding a motorbike or a snorricam.

Ohhhhh.... and as a bonus, it will be available for the GH6 too!!!

In addition, ARRI LogC3 recording can also be used on the LUMIX GH6 in the same way as the LUMIX GH7 by using the Software Upgrade Key DMW-SFU3A, with the exemption of the REAL TIME LUT function which is not available on this model.

Exceptionally few pro audio recorders do 32bit.

In fact ZERO did, up until a handful of days/weeks ago.

It was literally only just on May the 23rd that my 833 got a firmware update for 32bit:

Because there is incredibly little demand/need for 32bit in the Sound Dept.

Even the old Panasonic GH5S was damn good at low light, slap a fast lens equivalent on it, and you've got a camera that's on par to Sony's a7S

I owned a GH5 for a pretty long time and looking back at some footage, I much prefer the color accuracy of my Sony A7sIII.
I think if you compared the GH5 with a Sony a7Smk2 (or mk1!!) then you'd prefer the GH5's colors.
Many people feel it is only in the latest generation that Sony sorted out their colors.

GH7 body is the GH6 so all cages etc will just fit. Also I do use the CFexpress on my GH6 for two reasons. I can get several hours of 5.7K Vlog 60P on just one card and the transfer to PC is much faster than from an SD card, XLR2 with 32bit float looks great. Now I use a F3 and have to sync later. I am interested so far in an upgrade.

Full disclosure: Rant dead ahead. Be thankful that It I haven't had my nightly cocktail yet.

Panasonic, you're losing the plot.

M43

• GH2- a breakthrough video/ film hybrid camera- especially after hacking.
• GH3- A better GH2, with a trashed viewfinder inferior to the GH2's VF. Regressive, stale or lousy viewfinders appear to be Panasonic's CRIPPLE HAMMER of choice.
• AF100- A proper motion camera config, utilizing the M43 format with a better form factor- ILC's and ND's. Where are the proper M43 video lenses? AF100 discontinued with no followup. A crying shame.
• GH4- another breakthrough camera... but a lens lineup still lacking missing video/film centric lenses.
• DVX200- M43 in a camcorder. Great initiative and use of the M43 format. Dated sensor, overly bulky and larger than it need be. No followup. A crying shame part deux.
• GH5- ditto. Finally... the 10-25 and eventually the 25-50 lenses to accompany the M43 camera lineup. Why did it take so long?
• BGH1- A one trick pony, for a very particular use case that is so gimped it makes you scratch your head. Why? Even if this camera included some basic feature, it would have far greater application(s).
• GH6- A M43 version of the S1H- yay! Better ergos, Red frame record indicator, tally lights, a more usable LCD screen and other notable Pro features... But it's still a mirrorless form factor motion camera. I want a real movable ( at least tilting) viewfinder with great resolution.
• GH7- Rinse, repeat. Still , only a few film/video optimized lenses. Otherwise, crickets. Same old, same old mirrorless hybrid form factor.

FF
Ditto. Minus the two ventures into more usable form factors- the AF100 and DVX200. And let's not forget the FF version of the BGH1- the BSH1. Again- why?

• S9. Seriously? See: BGH1 and BSH1

So... we have the S1, S1H, S5, S5II, S5IIX, G9, G9II and the GH6 and now GH7- all of which are technically competent if not state of the art hybrids. Panasonic, I think you have the mirrorless hybrid video market covered...to put it mildly. There is a ridiculous amount of overlap and redundancy here. The G9II punches way above it's class. The overlap into GH territory is huge. Are both the G and GH lines really needed any more? Me thinks not. Panasonic, step out and up and release another M43 ILC video camera. Unless the viewfinder sucks, I'll throw my money at you. Among the spec chasing Youtube masses, their full frame drunken stupor shows no sign of abating in the near future. Make the GH series something more- a proper motion camera. Pull out the stops. At the very least , stop deprecating the format for motion use in your marketing materials. M43 is just as much for pros ass FF. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

My experience with mirrorless cams has kind of been like using the iPad for serious use. Lots of horsepower trapped in a crappy paradigm (or file system on the iPad). Years ago I saw a photo of a Chevy Vega that had been modified into a kind of monster truck. A 24 inch lift and a huge V8 was crammed into the engine compartment. It can be done, but does it make sense? Is the Chevy Vega a good candidate for Monster truck madness? Think mirrorless hybrids.

Due to several considerations, the GH6 is currently my primary rig. I'm all M43'rds up and invested in the eco-system. It's the best compromise in a sea of compromises. Out of sheer pragmatism I might add a GH7 this year, but not because I'm eager to. I need another camera for redundancy, and I'm not keen on my GH5 for motion work compared to the GH6/ 7. That said, unless Panasonic stirs things up with a better form factor camera, I'm going to start looking elsewhere.

Panasonic, It's not me- it's you.

Does anyone else relate?

Panasonic always nailed broadcast cameras. They are an engineering first type of company and mirrorless and cinema are kind of 'cool' in comparison. Which is not their strength. I just think they are understaffed/funded from upper management to some extent. The industry is so fragmented that I am sure it is tough to know what to make these days.

Because there is incredibly little demand/need for 32bit in the Sound Dept.

I have been using my Zoom F6 for a few years now and try to use a full 32bit workflow as much as I can. I think the end audio result sounds better. More info means better sounding EQ and effects etc.. in the DAW. 32bit out of the DAW into my NLE. This works well with 24bit source files as well but why not use 32bit if it is capable? The file sizes are not restrictive.
