I am looking at getting the new Media Composer program. I am confused, will it support HD? What type of video capture card/device would I need to add on to capture video/timecode and control a deck?
Mac and PC version are identical, and you get the installer for both when you buy the program.
Yes it supports HD. To capture anything other than firewire you need at least an Avid Mojo (Composite, S-Video, Component inputs/outputs and two channels of unbalanced audio) or Avid MojoSDI (save as Mojo but with SDI in/out). Note that the Mojo and MojoSDI are SD only.
If you intend to do HD work and need capture/output other than firewire, there's MojoDX (all digital--SDI in and out, HD and SD), or NitrisDX (analogue and digital In/out - the best buy of the lot, if you can afford it (it's about $15K with Media Composer software).
No other capture cards word with Avid. You have to use their hardware.
I have get the question to edit a friends musicvideo and they will use a Sony HDR-FX1E camera and redcord it i HDV (1080i and 25fps). Will Avid work with this format? Can't found 1080i/25 in Avids homepage.
I just checked on my Media Composer and, yes, you can get 1080p/25. I don't see a 1080i/25. But it may be that the 1080p/25 Avid project works with 1080i/25 just fine.
Chart makes reference to P2 rates, but will give you an idea of project rates http://www.24p.com/HVX200_1.htm. You can bring in footage HD/HDV firewire or HD thru P2, or of course, rs-422 if you have the digital I/O
