*New* Media Composer Pricing

By the way a decent MAC is going to cost 15k.
A decent HP XW8600 is 14k....

I realize we've gotten way off-topic here but, man. PM me. I've got some great gear I need to get rid of too. Also - a killer Mac. DVXuser special for you today only $12,000. I'll even pick up the shipping.

Right, I'm not saying you can't do it.... you can technically get it onto another system, but Apple doesn't want it to happen. So in their terms and conditions of the warranty it says you can't install on anything other than an Apple computer. Meaning if you install on a PC, you void the warranty and support from Apple. So when it comes down to it, you legally can't install it on another system.

Get me the name of your dealer, I need some of that crack.

Just in case you guys aren't following the discussion on Avid's Forums, they're reporting that the upgrade price from Xpress Pro to Media Composer is permanent, meaning that at any time in the future you can upgrade your software for the $500 price.

I found this particularly important because for me there's no benefit in upgrading until I can remove Advanced Pulldown with file-based workflows.

Yes I got the same feeling - I will wait till Ver. 3 (maybe at NAB?) as the announcment in Dec. implies that avid did it´s homework over the last years and something new is on the horizon.

Furthermore there is one thing Avid didn´t talk about yet: how will they manage their upgrade path for future releases ? If it goes the Apple way, it could become very expensiv to stay up to date (FCS= €1299; Upgrade: €499 - 38% of the original price, so btw. I don´t think FCS is cheap on a long view and Apple charges usually also for point releases - Avid did this only sometimes).

Currently the upgrade price fom MC 2 to 2.8 was around €950 - so to me it is very important to know what the worst case scenario could be to stay up to date with the new Avid thinking and MC (do I have to buy any support contract to get new updates, or what will they charge for major releases ?).

So I decided for myself to wait a little bit and see what they are going to do on these questions.

If you're using the HVX200, have you see this?
http://www.dvfilm.com/MXFX/index.htm

Takes the naive files from the card and returns MXF files with pulldown removed, uprez. flips. and noise reduction if needed.

Yes, I'm aware of that option. Sadly it's Windows only and all of my systems are Mac.

99% of my work is on an HVX. Out of that 99% I'd say that 80% is 1080 24pA. Only a small, small sampling of my clients require higher-end aquisition. As such the easiest post workflow to bring the footage in, push it around, and spit it out is what I'm going to go with. Right now, that answer is Final Cut Pro because it can handle pulldown removal without a 3rd party app. I prefer the way Avid handles media. I perfer the Avid interface. I prefer the word "Avid." But I'm not going to give myself a headache just to use a different system.

I've been told that Avid will be supporting Advanced Pulldown removal from file based workflows for over a year now. I don't mean to sound like I'm complaining, I'm really not. I know that features take time, and especially as fast as tapeless came into real workable status, there's going to be delay in catching up. Now there's the EX1 to deal with, and what about adding R3D support. I know Avid has a lot to do to their software. So I'm patiently waiting for one little feature, and then I'll be a happy Avid user again.

But thanks for the suggestion, Michael. :)

Now, to return this thread to it's actual topic: Michael, do you know what the official word about Assurance contracts for Media Composer is going to be? Am I going to pay $500 to upgrade to MC and then have to pay $1,500 (or whatever the current price is) for an Assurance contract?

EDIT TO ADD: Oops. Emu already addressed the Assurance Contract question. Didn't mean to steal thunder there.

<EDIT>: I gave the wrong price on Academic to Commercial upgrades (Xpress to Media Composer). Those who qualify for Academic pricing can purchase Media Composer Academic for $295. There is currently no upgrade price for Academic Xpress Pro to Commercial Media Composer. </EDIT>

Assurance Contracts: Nothing has been announced. If something will change on Assurance, it will be announced at a later date.

Regarding Assurance Contracts: You can buy the updates without them now, so unless you need the tech support, I wouldn't bother.

Michael.

i was told by b&h the 500 upgrade was until june 30 but i hear here that its permanent. i surely hope thats true.

also, how important is it to get this if i already have the mojo? does the amc require it? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=435762&is=REG

It's only important if you need SDI or more audio options. You don't need Mojo (SDI or otherwise) to run Media Composer.

And Marianna from Avid says that there is no expiration date on the upgrade price. This is also in line with Avid's behavior when they EOLed Xpress DV. To this day you can upgrade Xpress DV to Xpress Pro for $500.

I will absolutely be upgrading from Xpress Pro to Media Composer in the not-too-distant future. I mean, how could I not?! :)

DC is rite how could any not upgrade. i was planning on buying other things but after avid announced this its time to stop ignoring my computer and upgrade it. thank you avid.

This is an excellent upgrade opportunity. Installed mine a few days ago, from AXP 5.2, went real easy. Used several features already that have made it worth the price of admission.

Way to go Avid!

It really is amazing, Billy . . . getting Media Composer for $495.

Just curious which of the Media Composer features are you personally taking advantage of? :Drogar-SunGlass(DBG

i want amc for the fluid motion effect. any idea how to use? from what i read in another discussion it seemed complicated. is it complicated?

Well, one huge one is Full Screen Playback. I upgraded from 5.2 so never had it in AXP. I use a Mojo for SD but viewing HD material in FSP is a dream.

Also, I really like having two rows of information and buttons above the Composer window. In AXP I was constantly flipping between Abs, I/O, TC1, etc. I seem to use Abs and I/O a lot and now I can see both. I also like having a second row of buttons along the bottom of the Composer. I use the keyboard for triming, splice/overwrite, JKL, etc but I re-mapped a lot of less used functions to the second row. This interface stuff may be small potatos for some but makes a big difference for me.

Another biggie for me is support of the VC-1 codec. I use it all the time for my personal HD stuff and I really like it. Better than H.264 in my opinion. Now MC quick-imports certain flavors of VC-1 and that will come in real handy.

EDIT: Oh Yeah, how could I forget Boris Continum Complete. Now I can do some basic effects in-app that AXP was lacking... Like a simple gaussian blur! Trading footage between apps can be a real pain, now that's been minimized. Lots of other cool stuff in BCC as well.

Sounds cool. I've been using the Full Screen Playback mode with Xpress Pro for awhile now. Yeah, it rocks!
