Other: New major Release for Metabones adapters

OK guys - gave it a little more spin today, and it seems I'm the only one who complains about the Push AF not being able to nail it when my particular lens (Canon 16-35mm) is at its longest. In its wider settings, Push AF is snap-on 99% of times - which again makes me suspect something might be wrong with my lens... Can someone here offer an explanation why would it be impossible for Push AF to correctly work in telephoto? Perhaps I'm missing something - but even if I set focus manually on some distinct edge with this lens at full 35mm, then press Push AF - it will hunt several times and inevitably give up, setting the focus plane away from where I set it manually (and to be clear, NOT on any other object with more contrasty edges, as one might suspect - just a total mush)... Anyone, please?

Piotr

PS. Just to be clear: I realize that the longer focal length, the shallower DoF, but still...
PPS. Even if I enlarge the DoF by stopping down the iris (aperture higher by several stops), at full tele my Canon 16-35 / Speed Booster is more prone to throw out of (manually established) focus than to find it again, when Push AF is pressed. Interestingly - when I engage permanent Auto Focus - after some hunting it will find it! My problem in testing is I have no camera body with EF mount, so cannot easily check the lens w/o the adapter - hence the kind request for offering some explanation/comparison to you guys.

Ah, just noticed that the Metabones press release has an asterisk on lenses that support smooth iris. Only one I have is the Canon 70-200 series II f2.8. I'll have to test that one. It did seem to me that the Sigma 18-35 was pretty smooth though. Too bad its not on the Tamron SP 24-70.

Well so far this new release is an improvement but not the holy grail by a long shot.

By the way has anyone noticed whether the iris clicks are older than previous firmware. I can't remember.

The iris changes seem faster to me (I tested on the FS5, FS7, and A7RII) and the continuous AF, while a little slow, does seem to work fine on the FS7, FS5, and A7RII with the Canon 70-200 F4 IS and 24-105 F4 IS (it works rather well there).

However, it seems this release has broken IS on my 24-105 on all cameras but the FS7. I cannot engage it anymore. On the A7RII this is not a big deal as IBIS will take over when you turn off the switch on the lens (turning on the switch seems to do nothing). It works normally on the FS7. But on the FS5, the switch does nothing; IS stays off. Has anyone else noticed this?

The same thing seems to be going on with the 70-200. I'm tired so can't precisely remember if that one works on the FS5 but I know it works on the FS7. The 24-105 IS no longer functions on the FS5 with this metabones update. Not good.

Am I missing something? I tried green and advanced modes.

Same thing here is also my canon 17-55 does not work with my fs7

Is that IS that's not working with the Canon 17-55mm and your FS7? I have FS5 and a variety of lenses, including the Canon 17-55mm F2.8 IS which lives on the cam rather a lot.

I don't want to risk doing a Metabones IV firmware update if it'll stop IS working on this lens...

My contact with Metabones support has been so good lately that I dare suspect they rushed the new fw release based on tests with FS7 mainly :) Please be patient; the support persons sound very competent and they keep saying all glitches will be rectified... At least some manufacturer who listens (not saying the only one).

We must not make the update. The is no longer working with 17-55. No turning back.

Damn I didn't check IS with my lenses yet , hope they're not compromised. Far more important than the other issues.

So far IS works on the tamron 24-70 but both push focus and auto focus keep turning off altogether.

FYI, here is the answer from Metabones Support to my inquiry whether the newly optimized functionality of their adapters could be jeopardized by upgrading our FS7 cameras to the current firmware (v.4.0):

"Dear Mr. Wozniacki,
For your information, we have just tested with the FS7 (firmware 4.0), there’s no issue on Advance mode.

Regards
Elsie
GBI Ltd"

So, all should e good. I'm upgrading my camera today :)

Thanks ibsarr. Message understood!

sorry to everyone, I made a mistake. You had to read the instructions of the metabones before saying stupidities. the stabilisation works perfectly. You have to do all the manipulations that are explained in the instructions.
description down
In Green Mode, battery power is conserved by reduced aperture diaphragm movements. The aperture diaphragm will not stop down until the shutter release is fully depressed or the movie capture button is depressed. Image stabilization is not activated until the shutter release button is half-pressed or movie capture begins.Starting with firmware v50, advanced mode is activated by default for Smart Adapter II, III, IV, Speed Booster ULTRA and the original Speed Booster. The original Smart Adapter (Mark I) supports only the Advanced Mode.[h=1]Changing Mode Temporarily[/h]Choose the other operation mode by first turning on the power of your Sony NEX camera and either
  1. attach the Metabones Smart Adapter onto the Sony NEX camera body first, and then while depressing the Wide-Open/Custom Function (WO/CF) button of the Smart Adapter, attach the Canon EF mount lens onto the Smart Adapter, or
  2. attach the Canon EF mount lens onto the Metabones Smart Adapter first, and then while depressing the Wide-Open/Custom Function (WO/CF) button of the Smart Adapter, attach the Smart Adapter onto the Sony NEX camera body.
The operation mode is reset to default when either the Smart Adapter or the Canon EF mount lens is detached.[h=1]Changing the Default Mode Permanently[/h]
  1. With no lens attached, turn on camera body.
  2. While holding down the WO/CF button on the adapter, attach lens.
  3. Without ever releasing the WO/CF button, switch off the camera's power.
  4. Repeat to restore the default mode to Advanced mode again. With Mark I, Mark II, Mark III and the original Speed Booster, you may make the switch for only about 10 times. After that you can only make temporary mode changes. A firmware update will fully restore the capability to permanently change the default mode. There is no restriction on default mode changes with Mark IV and Speed Booster ULTRA.

ibsarr,
I find your post confusing since I don't know what you did with the camera and your 17-55. Are you telling us now that actually your stabilization works fine in Advanced Mode and you were accidentally putting it in Green mode rather than Advanced?

I assume we are entirely talking about what does and doesn't work in Advanced mode in this thread right?

yes what I said is confusing... but you have to remember that the stabilization only functions in normal mode. If you want it to function you have to press the WO/CF button on the adapter... see down
  1. With no lens attached, turn on camera body.
  2. While holding down the WO/CF button on the adapter, attach lens.
  3. Without ever releasing the WO/CF button, switch off the camera's power.

Now, this post is even more confusing. One needs to remember that starting with the current firmware, it's the Advanced Mode which is "norma" (i.e. default) on Metabones adapters, and all functions should be working in this mode. If your IS is only working in the "other" (i.e. Green) mode, something is wrong. BTW, IS should work in BOTH modes now - it's mainly continuous AF and AI that is switched off in Green mode to conserve power...

Piotr

Thanks Piotr - I was getting even more confused- what the heck was "normal mode" bad enough with Advanced and Green. My understanding (let me know if I'm correct) is that if you don't do anything with the buttons on the adapter you're in Advanced Mode and all functions should work.
If you don't have continuous AF on in the camera does it still use more power than Advanced mode? Are we talking about a lot of power here?

Correct - unless you mount the lens on adapter (or adapter on camera) in the mode-switching way (described above), you're in Advanced Mode with all functionalities. But also remember that switching modes is permanent - i.e. the next time you turn the camera on, the adapter will be in the mode you have enforced last time you used this method; use it again to switch the mode again. In other words: Advanced Mode is now the default one for newly bought or upgraded adapters.

If you switch AF and AI off on the camera I see no reason why the adapter should use more power in Advanced Mode - but yes, during my tests of the new firmware (when both continuous AF and continuous AI were on - unlikely in normal shooting style), my battery was drained noticeably faster...

Piotr

PS. In order to conserve power we should turn IS on the lens OFF whenever unnecessary (like on the tripod)!

Note that there is a revised firmware which was posted on June 30. It now makes Green mode the default mode. It improves AF-C in advanced mode on still cameras. And a few other fixes. Not certain it is necessary for FS5 or FS7 users.

Thanks Ned - Metabones Support didn't notify me about this new Release, but have just read the Press Release and indeed - in fw v.0.52, Green Mode is default again...

Piotr

Thanks guys I will try a FW reload ... I haven't had the chance to test green mode (now the new default) as I have been swamped.... I will try to test this weekend on FS5/FS7/A7RII to see if IS comes back.
