New Macs

weak. no dual cores, didn't hit 3ghz....perhaps wwdc stevie will surprise us all w/ a high end 3ghz dual core that he promised 2 years ago?

I doubt it!! It was all or nothing now!! Why would they give the macs a speed bump then upgrade them again in a few months? Doesn't really make sense. Not saying that it wouldn't happen...but it looks unlikely now. Looks like no Dual Cores for awhile longer. Damn lying ass Steve Jobs!!

I heard that the 2.7 is just a speeded up 2.5 and that the 2.0 is just a speeded up 1.8 and that my original dual 2.0 is better.

Just to be clear. Intel already had Hyperthreading. They are now coming out with dual core chips like AMD did. Hyperthreading allows multiple threads to run concurrently. Dual Core really has two internal processors that shuttle instructions back and forth. You lose about 20-30% because of the communicatin overhead, so you don't get the 200%, but it is still a nice speed boost.

could be a possibility...;)

"Apple has announced modest new PowerMacs at up to 2.7GHz with Dual-Layer Superdrives....and almost none of the other upgrades hoped for by the grapevine. Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger comes pre-installed. The lack of next-generation IBM processors and system controller suggest that another PowerMac revision -- or an entirely new high-end Pro Macintosh -- may follow before the usual update interval of 6-9 months."

...Would be nice. Let's keep our fingers crossed!! We'll need all the processing power we can get our hands on once we start editing HDV and DVCPRO-HD. That's for sure!!

I'm hoping for an announcemount in a few months, although it does seem unlikely. Then again, 2.7GHz is not much of an improvement on the last line, and IBM has the technology for dual core processors...so, why not hope?

Actually it's a Double-Layer (DVD+R DL)

REAL and true Dual Layer (DVD-R Dual Layer) isn't out just yet. Pioneer should be releasing the firmware update very soon. TDK is making the media for it also. Other companies will follow suit.

What the heck are you talking about? Are you saying that it's not "true" dual-layer because it's +R and not -R?

2.5 to 2.7 .... hmmm, not much of an upgrade if you ask me. I think that they have something up their sleave and this is just a stop gap until the next release. I would hold off on buying anything (if possible) until later this summer, or possibly until the winter. Appple will deliver - it is just a matter of waiting.

That's exactly what I'm saying!! the +R DL is a bastard format that has not taken off. It is a COMPLETELY different standard than the -R DL. -R DL is more like the specification used for true Dual Layer Pressed DVD's. That's why there has been little to no support at all from media companies on the +R DL format. Only a few companies are even making the media. Verbatim....and uh Memorex .....well that's about it. There are a few other stragglers out there.

So anyways...you can go read all about it for yourself. To make a long story short....Pioneer is leading the DVD-R DL camp, supplied with media by the frontrunner TDK. DVD-R DL will be the most compatible with the existing DVD-9 Standards just as DVD-R was most compatible with the exisiting DVD-5 format.

Here's the PDF on the Specs:
