New Macintosh G5s

Apple today just released their new crop of G5 computers.

These seem pretty fast. They are all dual processors, and the slowest of the three was faster than the dual 3.06 GHz processor Xeon (at least on the tasks Apple reported). If we can afford such a machine, it looks like our jobs got a little easier (at least quicker) and creative opportunities a little broader (can try more things without as much waiting to see how it will look).

interesting.. now we'll have to wait like what? a month or two for the new PC processors  to come out..  gotta love the fact that someone is constantly raising the bar!

Re: New Macintosh G5s

YOu know, it seems like apple goes through this every year. It's the worlds fastest Personal computer. I'm sure it is very fast, in fact it is probably extremely fast and a great computer, but the results shown, are really not true to life. The most significant factor is that apple, to be fair to itself, ran these PC's with an open source GNU compiler. This is fine if everyone that owns a PC runs Red hat, but that is far from the case, and for this reasong the Intel and AMD chips are optimized to run on windows XP. This is not to say that running Red HAT is slow, but it will give extremely different results when running things like Photoshop CS (the big one that aplle is toting). Apple was criticised extensively the first time they released the G5 and called it the fasted computer ever. That was shown to be not so true by later tests that used XP vs OSX. I really am not anti apple, I use macs at work and school all day, and I run photoshop, all day. However, when it comes down to my personal computer I still prefer a PC, both for the price and the costomizability (is that a word) that I have with it. It is by no means the fastest PC ever P4 2.4Ghz 1 gig of ram, but it is fast enough for what I use it for, and if you truely want to compare apples to apples I will run my $1200 (New cost) system against any $1200 Mac (new cost) system any day of the week, and I can guarantee that it will kick butt.

Re: New Macintosh G5s

Every time Apple or IBM or Transmeta or anyone else introduce a new hardware/software platform, it is another nail in the coffin of the Wintel duopoly.

Re: New Macintosh G5s

I agree with you speed bump, in fact, my next system will have an athalon 64. I would also love to use something other than windows, I don't have a problem with windows itself, just microsoft, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. The bad news is though, more and more companies are starting to take on Microsft business practices, the most recent being good ol ADOBE :(. Bad bad adobe, don't follow the footsteps of big brother Bill.

Re: New Macintosh G5s

i'm happy i waited for the dual 1.8's to drop in price. that's gonna be my target at the end of july.

Re: New Macintosh G5s

Except they had some of the facts wrong. The dual processor HP system using Avid gets 11 streams of real time video. The 5 streams was last year's performance measure. But I'm all for more speed, more storage! Gonna need it for those 2K/4K workflows!

Re: New Macintosh G5s

I didn't intend by my post to ignite the Mac/PC debate. Yes, I linked to a comparison site within Apple. My point is these are all very fast computers, which is good for video. I posted this to highlight that Apple has just released the new, faster version of their G5s, and that's good news for video people (who can afford a new one - which I can't for awhile >:().

Re: New Macintosh G5s

My comment on the Mac/PC debate is this - the most productive platform for video is the one you feel most comfortable with and will actually use (and not be intimidated by).

Re: New Macintosh G5s

I'm a mac fan and my next computer is a powerbook g5 (next year, when they should come out, unless I give in and buy a g4 before then), but from everything I've heard...avid on a windows work station is genuinely faster and--let's face it--is MUCH MUCH more popular.

I don't care though, I like final cut pro and the stability of a mac (although FCP has been crazy unstable recently.) Now if only discreet would put out 3dsmax for the mac. I'd call it "3d Studio Macs."

Re: New Macintosh G5s

Yes, maya is out for the mac, I just spent so long learning max (and still failing to have my characters animate anything close to correctly) that I don't want to go back and learn it all again. I'm still a mac fan at heart, though, and I may have acess to fast pcs with max 6 on them next year, so I'll just use those for 3d, I guess, and a mac for everything else.

The liquid cooling system on the new g5s worries me, though. Apple still doens't have an air cooled computer over 2ghz, and that means no real speed bumped chip in over a year, except one that creates horrible amounts of heat.

Also, if you look at the first graph, it seems the g5 does not scale well as the difference between 1.8ghz and 2.0 is much larger than that between 2.0 and 2.5. I hope this isn't the case, though, and it still won't stop me from getting a g5.

Re: New Macintosh G5s

Policar,

do you think it would be better for now to buy the DP 2G rather than the DP 2.5G because of the heat problem ?

Re: New Macintosh G5s

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about G5s and liquid cooling to say one way or the other. The 2.5 would definitely be faster, and I doubt apple would release a liquid cooling system unless it was heavily tested, although it is pretty much the first such system in a "normal" consumer computer. That said, I have a suspicion that the reason the G5 case is so huge was that apple has always had plans to invest in alternative cooling methods. If this is the case, then it's more of a permanent solution to heating issues than it is a crutch to squeeze out a few extra megahertz, but any processor that needs a 600w power supply and liquid cooling to run makes me a bit suspicious. If you have the money, I suppose I'd go for the dual 2.5, but I'm dissapointed that IBM was unable to deliver the promised 3.0ghz G5 with standard cooling.

Re: New Macintosh G5s

i think vegas and FCP are both awesome programs, i just seem to work faster with FCP, so i like it more.

they both kicks ass though

Re: New Macintosh G5s

Dear Folks:

I'm running Final Cut 3 on a 533 MHZ G4 and I'm thinking of buying a G5. Only now that I've saved the money I'm getting cold feet.

People use FCP on G3's. What will having a Dual 2.0 do to my experience of editing DV? What differences will I notice? (I'm not working with uncompressed hidef quite yet!)

Re: New Macintosh G5s

Raoul.. I think you'll notice night & day. The bus speed increases alone will speed up your workflow. I'm assuming you're still on OS9 if you're on an older G3/4? OSX is a huge improvement in and of itself.

Take the leap... you won't look back.
