New Macbook Pro's

I get a pretty good discount.......

I don't think Macs are overpriced at all. Your getting a superior OS with quality equipment and rather good customer support. They're products are for the most part easy to upgrade (ram, hard drive, etc)

Exactly..... For the first time in 20 years..... My Studio is PC free! Not saying we won't load XP on to the iMac that we do business on for some odd program. Apple products, Apple Care, Apple Store and there support are second to none and the Apple environment seems to have come full circle with there software, iPhone, iTunes, personal and business solutions.
Not trying to fuel a Mac/PC thing...... Just sharing information from a working Studio.

Can you point me to the direction where it says that one can not upgrade the internal hard drive speed? Do you know what it's speed limit is?

Because I was thinking in about a years time when fast SSD get cheaper I would just pop one of those in.

I don't really have any links at hand right now, sorry, and I'm just heading out the door in a few minutes.

That was basically my plan, get a fast SSD and put it in there. If you do that with the 17" right now, there won't be a problem, because the computer itself can access the hard drive with a 300 MB/s connection. That thing is too massive for me, though. The new 13" and 15" MBPs only have a 150 MB/s connection and you won't see any tangible difference between a 7200rpm hard drive and a faster SSD that justify the cost, in my opinion. That's potentially, but probably not actually, half the speed. Even if a SSD doesn't saturate the bandwidth in the faster connection, that's still a considerable hit considering I would have about the same performance from a more traditional hard drive. Unfortunately, as I said, the new 13" and 15" MBP offer absolutely no reasonable expansion options as far as hard drive speed - the only meaningful bottleneck in computers right now.

As to all the talk about choice: My choice is pretty much saving a bit of money and cobbling together a good hackintosh setup. I'm not really angry at Apple or anything, but they no longer sell a portable product that I'm interested in, so they don't get my money. It's pretty simple.

http://www.dailytech.com/Apple+13+M...ing+Possible+SATA+Speed+Caps/article15410.htm

According to this article it might be a 1.5Gbs cap, down from a 3.0 Gbs cap, which still is interesting. Looks like we might have to wait and see what Apple will say.

(Edit: Is 1.5Gbs and 150MB/s the same? I assume so... So many subtle differences in abbreviations mean completely different things... 8) )

Edit2: Rumor has it that only some of the 13inch and 15inch models have the cap, possibly just the ones with base processor speeds. But there is alot of conflicting information out there right now...

hope this isn't off topic but when will Apple have the next conference/annoucement ?

after NAB I know it's WWDC, so what's next?
I'm basically waiting for apple to annouce FCS 3...and more stuff.

Why do they want to service the small number of pros that buy and upgrade their product so infrequently, when they can have these consumers in their pocket salivating for their iphone, ipod ...etc ?

Let's not obsfucate this discussion with logic! We really can't have any of that behavior.

Because these same guys that wait in line for those products got into Apple because their "cool creative friends" always said Apple was good. If these "Cool creative friends" support any other brand and say they are cool, these "qeue consumers" will follow them.

When was the last time you see a crowd like this outside your Apple Store trying to purchase Final Cut Studio or the Mac Pro ? What is sad is that these people will flock back and get into their line every year Apple introduces a new iphone or ipod or iToaster.

and What ? Apple should care about you because you use Panasonic P2 Camera and you need the express card slot because you use the Duell Adapter ?? What because you edit Video and you need the matte screen and not glossy ? What you use the Ex1 and you needed that express slot for your SXS card or your Hack a SXS solution ?? WAKE UP , Apple now is a consumer electronic company selling little electronic gadgets to your average yuppies, high schooler, businessmen and the average soccer moms.

You & Me ? we are just a very tiny-tiny slice of the overall pie.

I always found it funny that the demographics of Apple's consumer base are people who really can't afford the products to begin with.

Just ordered a 17" anti glare Macbook pro. My Powerbook g4 1.67 finally died after 5 years of service, and after much consideration, I decided to purchase this mac. Also ordered the duel adapter for P2, since it looks like it works well with Leopard, and I would rather have Leopard and P2 working and await to upgrade to snow leopard when the drivers become compatible.

Its big, but seems much lighter than my old powerbook, and the price, for a mac, is quite attractive. I also get to keep my workflo for the time been, as well as have windows for any emergency.
