New MacBook Pro (Vroom with a View)

"o. I wonder if the new MBpro is powerfull enough to handle the new version 2 of FCP"

the original Core Duo MBP was enough for FCS 2 now adays, and being Apple's premeire professional mobile computer, im MORE than sure that they can handle FCS and what you throw at it, especially considering im on a 2gb Ram, 2.33ghz, 256mb vram system and never have to render in FCP, and Motion is a screamer; a 2.4ghz system with 4gb ram will 'get you buy'

I got my 17" dual 2.4 MBP last week. 2gigs of RAM, the High Res screen and the 160 gig 5200 rpm drive. Been running FCP 2 on it for a week and not a single issue. Way faster them my dual 1.8 ppc with 4 gig of ram but I guess that's to be expected.
I've also been running all my content for the laptop on a tiny buss powered USB2 drive and it's held up well. Great for portablitly since I hate carrying around firewire drives to the coffee shop and looking/waiting for a plug-in.....

The one thing I didn't count on, and should have if I were paying attention, was between FCP 2, Logic pro and a couple of sample discs I've eatin' up 110 of the 160 Gigs on the system drive. I'll be working on my data management skills I guess since I have an issue with deleting anything.....

I held off replacing my first generation MacBook Pro until last week. Now my desk is sporting a 17" 2.4 GHz with the HD display, 7200 R.P.M. HD and 4 Gb of memory.

Final Cut Studio 2 is plenty fast for most things you would ever attempt on a laptop. And yes, the HD display is great. The extra real estate more than compensates for small text and it's easy enough to specify larger font sizes in FCP and other apps.

Here's a cool tip if you haven't tried it- go to System Preferences and turn on Zoom. Then for the fun part; hold down your control key and drag two fingers up and down your trackpad (or spin the scroll wheel on your mouse). Instant Zoom!

Also I got the Duel Adapter working for ingesting P2 media, as described in detail here:

So far so good with the MacBook Pro, I even got brave and loaded 10.4.10 (after a complete backup!)

I just got the 15" 2.4GHz one two days ago and I have to say it is impressive. I have a G5 but since I'll be doing a lot more location (and HD) shooting with my HVX I decided to get a laptop to capture footage. I looked into the P2 capture drives and the FS100 and whatnot but I wanted something where I could actually watch the footage.

I installed all of my major programs - FCS 2, After Effects, Photoshop, etc. I ran into the same problem where I realized how much space I used up after all of that was installed. Something I need to keep an eye on. Though it's great having these pretty powerful programs on the go. It was a huge bite into my finances but so far I am glad I did it.
