New MacBook Pro (Vroom with a View)

The new MacBook Pro's are out. More processor power (I assume the new chips, though not labeled as such), new monitors (the 17" comes with an optional monitor choice that supports 1920 x 1200 native), fun stuff.

MacBook Pro

cheers.

Yes, it is the Santa Rosa Chipset, although they are not much faster and "802.11N" was already in the Macbook Pro's. The big improvement is the ability to go to 4 gig Ram with matched pairs and the ability to get 1920x1200 screen size. The 7200 RPM 160 gig hard drive is nice as well. The graphics card is still 256 MB, but it is better for next generation stuff, like Blu-Ray and HD DVD which aren't on the Mac yet.

I really am waiting for the upgrade to the iMac's which is likely coming at WWDC. I really am hoping for a revamp, not just the Santa Rosa Chip upgrade. I want to see a Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4 chip in the 24" model. That would be awesome.

That, a decent video card upgrade and an increase in max RAM to 4Gb or more just might sway me over from getting a Mac Pro (I want 24" goodness damnit!)

maybe a bit early but what will be the next upgrade of the MBpro probably at the end of the year. At least you will get Leopard as OS but what else ? blueray/HD DVD ? multi core processor ??? any ideas?

A further processor upgrade I guess depends on Intel. I think Apple has shown a strong willingness to update their lines about as rapid as Intel can pump out new chips. You could Google around and see what Intel rumours are floating around.

Blu-Ray into the MBP? That would be cool. Though I don't know if you'll see that in '07. First they need to show up in in the Mac Pros, then they can deal with the slimline versions for the laptops. But hey its Apple so who knows really.

As for the Leopard OS, well I'd be cautious there. I have way more faith in Apple than MS, but a big OS update is still a risk. I'd buy a box with Tiger, then wait a few months after the release of Leopard and then upgrade at that point. Let other people play the guinea pig role for you. At least if you think you'll have any major projects going on at the time, I wouldn't risk such a big upgrade at that point. But if you're in a lull and can tolerate the possible hiccups, then hey why not.

cheers.

AFAIK, mobile processors from intel will continue to have 2 cores for some time (4 cores are a ways off). if there is a bump before macworld in january, i'd guess that it would just include a proc bump... maybe another small thing. but i don't think there is anything major that will be changed by the end of the year.

looks about the same to my naked eyes in the store, looks good but still that laptop weirdness when changing angles up and down

probably it is to early to expect already experiences with the new MBpro after an introduction of a week.

Actually... if someone can share their experience of an 'old' mbp in combination with studio 2, that would be helpfull also. The difference is not that big.
I see you're from the netherlands.
Goedemorgen zou ik zeggen !

cheers

Hi Senne ,

Where are you from in The Netherlands?
You have a website?

What kind of edditing set-up do you have?

I am from belgium to be precise. I live near Antwerp and unfortunatly don't have a website yet. But is comming. I only received my hvx a few weeks ago and am still awaiting my p2 card.
I need a portable system since i will film on lacation a lot. I am buying a macbook pro 15" 2.4ghz with 4 gigs of ram.
i know you are looking for a good reason to buy either a pc or a mac.
These are my reasons:
- I good friend has made the change from pc to mac several years ago and is really excited about it.
- As for a laptop I believe a macbookpro has more power when it comes to graphics ( as the marketing of apple makes us believe or may be a fact )
- It looks cooler of course. This is a stupid reason, but i like a good looking office.
- A lot of the people i have worked with own mac's. So for me personally it is easier and more compatible with my surrounding.
- I am completaly new to HD editing and the guy I ask the most questions works with mac, so it is easier to explain.
- With mac there are no zillion options for software and hardware. There is just the apple stuff ( besides boot camp XP integration of course). They may be overpriced from time to time, but i don't want to search the web for hundreds of hours and still not knowing what to buy. Like you are doing now i guess ( or were doing ).:)

So i am no expert... at all !! I just went with the easy solution which felt most secure. I have lots of people around me who can help me out. The solution will always be a simple one, without to many options and doubts. And on top of that i get to be hip and trendy

That's all i have to say about it. I don't know what you bought or gonna buy. But i feel we have the same issues. When i get my mbp, I will let you know. (please remind me if necessary).

I looked up your website. The portfolio clips don't wortk for me. I can't click them.

My "problem" is not that I can not decide between a PC or a Mac. The Mac seems for me the way to go since I want to use FCS. I am torn between a MBpro and a Mac pro. I wonder if the new MBpro is powerfull enough to handle the new version 2 of FCP. My internet site is still under construction . So how is your experience with the HVX200 (especially in low light conditions) ???

I think if you add 4 gig of ram the mbp will do just fine. Motion I am not sure about. I know people who edit in fcp on a regular macbook as if it were DV footage, so ...
For me the advantage of a laptop is more of a necessity than a luxury.
The next thing i 'll buy is an extra monitor and after that a mac pro. But that won't be something for the next few months.

The low light situations are a disappointment. The gain control adds to much noise and grain. But i prefer to shoot on sunny days, so hopefully i won't be in dark situations to often.

I am also very interested i the New Macbook Pros and would love to hear about their performance with FCP 6.

In order to get 4gb of ram it is a $750 upgrade, way to much for ram. Like its said above there are mac-certified vendors out there, however, when it comes to laptops, can you add extra ram?

Then, if you do add extra ram, it be different from your original Macbook RAM. I've heard you always want to use the exact same ram, is that valid or does it only pertain to the ram's timing and not brands/product ID??? Oooor can you just pop in more ram of whatever size/type/timing (within the motherboards specs) and have it all run together? (no dual channel here)

I just bought the 15" 2.4Ghz 160GB LED model yesterday. It smokes my old 1.67Ghz Powerbook. As an example, I am working on a project that has text effects that are about 4 layers of text with 3d, rays, an motion blur on top of HD backgrounds that are then matted and dropped on top of my talking head shot. There are 216 DVCPro HD Frames (9 seconds of screen time at 24fps) to render. On the Powerbook G4 1.67GHz it takes about 40 minutes to render. On the new Macbook Pro it only takes 7 to 8 minutes for the exact same render.

The Quad G5 in my friends office does it in about 6 minutes, so I am pretty happy to say the least.

I got the 15" for the size and the LED display - I have it plugged into an Apple Cinema Display most of the day, so I don't miss the res of the 17". It is nice and bright, but not worlds different from the previous model. The nice thing is that LEDs stay nice and bright for most of their life.

So yes, this new MacBook is a viable desktop for those moving up from desktop G5s, dual core iMacs etcetra. An 8-core machine maybe in my future, but for now this little beast rocks.

Oh, and I bought the 4GB upgrade from transintl.com for $218.00 last week, and it is down to $198.00 this week. This is ram with lifetime warranty and transintl has been around for nearly 20 years. So don't give Apple $750 for ram. Remember, when your Apple warranty runs out, it runs out on the ram too. Not so with 3rd party ram, and it took less than 5 minutes to install. No big deal.
