New Mac Pro!

Not sure if this is the right place for this topic, but who plans to buy one of the new Mac Pros? I'm very close to pulling the trigger on it. Just not sure if I should go with the "lowest end" 3.5Ghz 6-core w/25mb L3 cache, or pay $1500 for 8 cores or $3000 for 12 cores. Will the 3.5 Ghz 6 cores be faster than my 2.8Ghz Dual Quad Core Intel Xeon?
Has anyone else built their dream machine yet?

Ultimately I want a machine that will process video faster than my current 6 year old Mac Pro. Compressor is painfully slow on my current system...

I suspect that if you're using FCPX, even the lowest 4-core will beat most old Mac Pros due to the dual graphics cards since FCPX 10.1 is specially designed to take advantage of those...

IMHO, you are not going to see much of an improvement running FCP 7 on a new Mac Pro, as a matter of fact, you might not even get it to install on the newest operating system. Running a new 64bit app like FCPX or Premiere Pro CC is an all together different subject. As they rock on a new Mac, even on the latest 27" iMac.

Do you have a MacPro to sell us Bob? We are looking for good deals here on this board ;]. So glad you pulled the trigger. Waiting on your review!

I went with 8 Core, 64GB ram, Dual D700, 512MB SSD Drive.

Nice. What will you be running on it?
Right now I'm using Compressor to process 2.5 hours of iPhone and Blackberry footage of my nephews. It says 25 hours remaining! How can this be possible? Compressor has always been slow for me. I would be happy to drop $6K on a Mac if it could do these jobs in a reasonable amount of time. I'd love to hear how it runs for you.

What Mac are you using for this footage?

And you running FCP X on that Mac?

I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro, and I regularly process 2 hours of 1080/60p h.264 footage that is transcode in the background the Pro Res LT, and it doesn't take 1/10 of that time.

I have a Mac Pro from 2008, with two 2.8 Ghz Quad Core Intel Xeon processors, 8 GB RAM, 12MB L2 Cache per processor.
And I'm running Final Cut 7.0.3
Any help would be great. Thanks!
Andrew

As previously stated, if you're still running FCP7 you're better off just sticking with what you have. A new Mac Pro isn't going to benefit you much at all. 32-bit software like FCP7 is going to have a crazy bottleneck on it. A new Mac Pro would be a waste of money unless you switch software to FCPX or Premiere CC.
