New Mac Pro is now 8 core

Also anyone here use a control surface like the Mackie Universal Control ??

I use one almost every day (along with a Mackie Control Expander, for 16 channels) with Digidesign Pro Tools, MOTU Digital Performer and Logic Pro. It's connected via a MOTU Express 128 USB midi interface to my dual 2.7 GHz G5. It works very very well, with a few minor exceptions here and there (like PT only being able to access aux send knobs on the main unit, not the expander).

It's supposed to work with Soundtrack Pro and FCP, but I really haven't used it much yet. If I recall correctly, I did briefly try it once, successfully, on at least one of them.

As you can infer from the above, my main occupation is still on the audio side... : )

ted, can the scroll wheel on the mackie controls the fast forward and backwards on the FCP's video time line ??

i am waiting to get the mackie universal control pro. Too bad this is a 100% control surface and have no preamp , phantom 48 and input.

DO you think it is possible to chain a mixer with 48v phantom, preamp with the control universal and still being able to listen via studio monitors from the control universal ?

I don't know. I rarely use the scroll wheel even in the audio apps. I'll give it a try in FCP one of these days and post what I find.

Not sure about the "Pro" model, but the MCU/EXP are strictly hardware emulations of the app's GUI mixer/transport/etc. I sit them on top of my analog console when they're in use, and run several channels on the analog board for monitoring, along with metering, talkback etc. As for preamps, I have several outboard units I use, patched directly into the audio interface's inputs.

See my second response above. There's no "chaining" possible, or necessary. MCU has no monitoring features (perhaps the Pro does). If you have an analog mixer/preamps/monitors/etc., just continue to use them as you always have. Use the MCU as a hardware emulation of the software's GUI. Remember there are no tasks you can do on an MCU that you can't do with the mouse. It's just easier, more intuitive and faster in most instances to use the MCU's hardware.

Edit: I just took at look at the specs on the Pro version and it looks like the only major difference is that it includes a built in USB midi interface. If you've already got one of those there would appear to be little reason to choose it over the regular MCU.

On the Apple site, under the new MacPro performance specs...they show how much faster a "quad" core is using Final Cut Pro, but nothing about the "8 core". They do show 8 core results for 3D rendering. Wonder if FCP cannot utilize the 8 core version across all 8? It's strange they wouldn't have their top machine benchmark FCP or maybe they're waiting for FCP 6?

bob,

i am sure next sunday when apple reveals fcp 6 or fcs 2 or final cut extreme, they will utilize all the 8 cores :)
