Hm ... no Firewire 800 port, and no S-video Out on the Macbooks. I think my Powerbook just got some of its old sparkle back.

Seriously though, that is a little disappointing. I thought Firewire was Apple's baby. Why stiff the new product?

Cool.

I guess it runs the Apple software just the same?

Makes me want to wait for the G6 (or whatever it is called) now! My old G4 really needs replacing, but Intel chips could mean a major performance hike... and I can wait a little longer...

you can always get a firewire 800 pcmcia card...

Nope. The Macbook doesn't have PCMCIA it has ExpressCard. I'm sure there will eventually be a FW 800 ExpressCard, but I don't think they exist yet.

Depends on if you have a program with Universal binaries or not. OS X will run like it always have. Final Cut Pro won't have a universal binary until March. Until then it's got to run through Rosetta. Not sure how well that works.

Edit: Redcap beat me to it.

Check out http://www.apple.com/rosetta/

FCP and a few other apple pro applications require a paid update to run on the new MacBooks..

$49 for Final Cut Studio is not too bad, considering everything else. As much as I'd like to upgrade right away, I think I'll probably hold off awhile for the early bugs to get worked out.

I certainly hope the whole Universal and Rosetta things are what they're claiming.

we just ordered one...i'll let you know how it runs when it gets here (next month grrr)

They also introduced Intel iMac? Wth, didn't they just release some upgraded G5 one a couple of months ago? I don't really care - I have PowerMac - but I would surely be pissed if I bought a "new" iMac just weeks before they dumped it.

EDIT: Had to dig it up on Apple's site. Previous model was introduced on October 12, less than 3 months ago.

They aren't dumping the G5 imac. On the Apple Store they have the two segmented into camps of PowerPC and Intel. The two will probably be offered simultaneously until Apple decides to switch over fully to Intel. However I don't know if we'll ever see a G6 as someone mentioned earlier since the G5 was a PowerPC processor. Intel's processors have a different designation from what i can tell.

No G6....

No G6....

Apple's done with IBM and with RISC processors (like PowerPCs). They are transitioning entirely to CISC and will use universal binaries so long as the transition takes. But they aren't going back so don't hold your breath. The MacBook Pro will replace the PowerBook.

These computers are lightning fast, by the way. The 2ghz iMac G5 has no trouble running H264 at 1080/24p, which I've never really seen a computer do before. Boot time is next to nothing, too, and Photoshop and Office run fine under Rosetta. The MacBook pro is kinda weird but is hard to distinguish from a PowerBook. Seems to be really fast but they don't have any production units yet.

Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, etc. are not universal binaries yet, so they will be pretty slow for difficult tasks. And what's up with FCP universal in March, then FCP 6 at NAB? Weird. I'm holding off until I can get FCP.

Also, I got to use an XL1h today. Nice.

Apple wasn't supposed to release the Intel models for another 6 months. but I guess the work went faster than they thought. Or it could have been a ruse so that people wouldn't stop buying the G5 models.

In any case, the Core Duo iMacs are supposed to be 2-3x faster than the G5's in certain areas, but cost the same. Why buy a G5 now?
