New LA Time-Lapse (QT7 File)

Okay, so here's some new stuff that I just went out and did tonight. The first shot didn't really turn out the way I wanted it to but it still looked okay. I also shot this in the RGB color space on the 20D camera. All the other stuff I've done has been sRGB. I figure I would try it and see how it worked out. Also you need Quicktime 7 to watch this. So if you don't have it get it. Enjoy.

Drew your crazy, Just like always that stuff kicks ass. I like the second shot where you can see the blue elevators going up and down thats just cool. Keep up the good work.

Hey Drew I cant wait to watch this but I heard QT7 is for mac users only (which would explain why this isnt playing for me :) ). Any chance you could post a wmv? Thanks.

Thanks SU :)

Edit: Just watched the video and realized that I could watch time lapse all day long. Its that good :)

I'm assuming that the shots were using a DVX100a ...right? Can Someone guide me to the best place to learn more on this technique?

Shiloh

I believe it was shot on the new Canon EOS 20D ? You can do this with the DVX100 but the results would not be as spectacular as Drew559's are. Check your manual and you can only do it in 60i Mode as far as I know.

Damn; I'd like one of these Canon's.

Shiloh, John is right about this being shot on my new 20D. I've never tried using my DVX for any of this before. I more than likely won't try it either. I would like to try it on the HVX when it comes out. The 20D, for me, is perfect to do time-lapse with. Thanks for all the comments.

geeesh…now I feel like the retarded step child. This may sound like a stupid question, but since I'm fairly new to this film production stuff I'll throw it out there, I have nothing to loose. Sorry guys.

Here it goes:

How can some one do time lapse on a digital photography camera...my guess is that you take the time lapse shots and place them into a time line separately? Or does the canon offer a time lapse function that allows you to capture it and incorporate the footage via firewire?

Thanks for your patience in answer this for me.

Pete

Shiloh, your first guess is the most accurate. I just take all the pictures for that a shot I did and put then into a timeline in FCP and it puts them in order. Then I have to render to see the frames in motion depending on how long it is and what resolution the sequence is set to.

ah, ok I see. So their actual individual picutures shot at low or high rates that are placed into the timline.

Well thanks Drew  , keep up the good work were all counting on you

Just to let you know most, if not at, of the time-lapse stuff I do is in 2 second incriments. I just like the way the clouds move using this setting, along with other stuff going on in the frame. But I'm going to start doing stuff with my camera mounted to my car and that will be at a much faster frame rate. I'll post that when I have it ready, which might be a while.

I also found out that my earlier clip of LAX has made it to the FAA up in Seattle and they liked it. It got to them from a friend of a friend. Kind of cool. Now if I could get them to make the cops leave me alone over at LAX then I would be set.

Hey Drew when you say you'd use a faster frame rate with the car do you mean one second instead of two, since I thought the remote allows only for one picture every second minimum right? Also I thought I remembered you mentioning something in one of your other posts regarding how even with the remote you still have to push a button every once in a while. Could you elaborate on that.

One last thing (which should really be the last question :) ): You use FCP but I have Premiere Pro 1.5, so after I set my timeline to be 24p where do I go to import these pics. I mean do I just import the folder they are in and highlight them all and drag them into the timeline or is it more complex than that?

I bought a book to learn more about the 20D so I'll be posting some stuff just for fun soon enough :).

Thanks!

Edalgo, I haven't done any tests yet with the remote yet to see how fast it can capture frames. But I'm sure I can make it work for me. When the remote reaches the end of the frame count all I have to do is push the start button again and there you go. It will start over at 99 or whatever you put it at.

I have never used Premiere so I'm not to sure on what the steps would be. But it does make sence what you are saying. You should have all your frames that your going to use in a folder and then import then into your project. Then after you make a 24p timeline highlight all the frames you want to use and drag them to your timeline. Also make sure that your still frame setting in your program is set to one frame. I think FCP is defaulted to 12 seconds or something like that. Also be aware of what resolution you have your timeline set to. It also might take a while for the program to rescale the frames down to DV or whatever your using.

Looking forward to some time-lapse from you Edalgo.

Ok so I checked out Premiere and in the preferences I've found something called "Still Images" and the Default Duration is set at 1 frame so maybe thats what Im lookin for. Woo!
